Team of the Week

The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in its inaugural season of recognizing the top performance at each of thirteen positions from the previous week. This is the first Team of the Week of the 2012 season.

Games of February 27 - March 5, 2012

Ryan Schilter, Jr., UW-Stevens Point
In his Pointers debut, Schilter hit .571 and slugged .714, going 4-for-7 with a double and three RBIs. Schilter had 16 chances without an error as UW-Stevens Point swept Gustavus Adolphus to start 2-0.

1B  Matt Thompson, Sr., McMurry
Thompson went 8-for-10 with two home runs, a double and six RBIs to fuel a three-game series sweep over East Texas Baptist. Thompson, who hit both of his homers in a 5-0 win in the opener, also scored seven runs and walked three times.

2B  Dustin Worthman, Sr., York (Pa.)
Worthman was 7-for-10 with two doubles in a 1-1 week for York (Pa.). Worthman banged out three hits including a pair of doubles in the Spartans' 18-8 win over Southern Virginia on Tuesday. He added a career-high four runs scored in the non-conference victory. He had a career-high tying four hits in the Spartans' 8-3 loss at Catholic on Thursday.

SS  Andrew Goldstick, Fr., Washington U.
Goldstick led Washington (Mo.) to five wins on the week, including two each over No. 13 St. Scholastica and No. 16 Buena Vista. Goldstick batted .647 (9-of-15) with six RBIs and six runs on the week. He recorded at least one hit in all five games to extend his hitting streak to six games.

3B  Jared Van Hoon, Sr., Pacific
Van Hoon finished the week going .462 in three games against No. 2 Linfield. He had the game-winning hit and was the winning pitcher in Pacific's 7-6 come-from-behind win over the Wildcats on Sunday. Van Hoon also owned a .692 slugging percentage and finished with five runs batted in.

OF  Hank Akard, So., Rose-Hulman
Akard batted .586 for the week with three four-hit games and five multiple-hit games in six appearances. He recorded an on-base of .594 and slugged .828 as the team's leadoff hitter, helping the Engineers finish 4-2 for the week.

OF  Sean Butler, Sr. Scranton
Butler batted .438 (7-for-16) and drove in 11 runs as Scranton opened the season with four wins. On Sunday March 4, he had five hits, including three homers, nine RBIs and four runs scored in a sweep of Arcadia. His last homer was a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to give the Royals a 7-3 victory in the nightcap against Arcadia.

OF  Andy King, Sr., Hamline
King was 8-for-11 (.727) in a 3-1 week for Hamline. King had four extra base hits, two doubles, a triple and a home run. He scored four times and drove in 11 runs.

DH  Tom Murray, Sr., Drew
Tom Murray led Drew to a sweep of Polytechnic as the Rangers started the season 2-0. The senior designated hitter hit .500 (3-for-6) with a double, posting a .667 stugging percentage.

SP  Kevin Herget, Jr., Kean
Herget took a no-hitter into the ninth inning before surrendering a one-out single, the only one of the afternoon. He picked up his second win of the season in the complete game, shutout. Herget had three walks and eight strikeouts on the day.

SP  Trevor Breton, Fr., Western New England
In his first collegiate appearance, Breton allowed only three hits in seven innings with two walks and three strikeouts in a 1-0 victory over MIT.  Breton was the Commonwealth Coast Conference Rookie of the Week.

SP  Greg Goldsmith, Jr., Christopher Newport
Goldsmith made two starts this week, blanking both of his opponents for seven innings each. Goldsmith struck out a career-high nine batters against Adrian, allowing just four hits in a no decision. In a conference game against Greensboro, he again pitched seven scoreless, picking up his first win of the season and a combined shutout with closer Ryan Fleischmann.

RP  Matt Verdillo, Jr., Christopher Newport
Verdillo Made three appearances for the nationally ranked Captains, striking out eight in 4.1 innings. The junior lefty allowed only one hit this week and picked up a save against Greensboro with five strikeouts in two innings of relief.

Made two starts this week, blanking both of his opponents for seven innings each. Goldsmith struck out a career-high nine batters against #26 Adrian (Collegiate Baseball News), allowing just four hits in a no decision. He left the game with the lead but a blown save cost him the win. Then, in a conference game against Greensboro College, he again pitched seven scoreless, but this time picked up his first win of the season and a combined shutout with closer Ryan Fleischmann.
