The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in
its third season of recognizing the top performers at each of nine
positions from the previous week. Players are selected from
nominations from their school's sports information directors. This
is the eighth Team of the Week of the 2014 season.
Games of March 31-April 6, 2014
C Jake Wylie, Sr., Linfield
Wylie completed his comeback from an early-season injury with
three home runs and five RBI in a three game sweep of Pacific
Lutheran as he compiled a 1.364 slugging percentage. Wylie batted
.455 (5-for-11) as the designated hitter in game one before
registering a defensively perfect weekend in his first two games
behind the plate since mid February.
1B/SP Trey Martin, Sr., Wheaton (Ill.)
Martin hit .409 (9-for-22) on the week for Wheaton (Ill.). He had
12 RBI and scored six runs. Among his five extra-base hits were two
doubles and three home runs. Martin also excelled on the mound,
throwing a complete game two-hitter with 13 strikeuts on a 1-0 win
over Illinois Wesleyan.
2B Brok Martin, Jr., Alvernia
Martin was 7-for-14 (.500) as the Crusaders went 4-1. He scored
twice, adding double and a stolen base on the week. He
handled 12 chances without an error.
SS Christopher Orlando, Sr., Oneonta
St.
Orlando batted .556 (10-for-18), extending his hitting streak to
eight games. He drove in 14 runs and scored five in six games this
week. Six of his hits went for extra bases (four doubles, triple
and home run) for a 1.056 slugging percentage.
3B Mitch Stefanski, Sr., Adrian
Stefanski was a home run shy of the cycle with two doubles, a
triple and four runs scored in game one against Hope on Friday. In
his first at-bat of game two he hit a home run and finished
7-for-12 (.583) against the Flying Dutchmen with four doubles and
seven RBI.
OF Zach Rapacz, Jr., George Fox
Rapacz played a major role in the Bruins' 3-0 week at home vs.
Puget Sound. For the week, he batted .625 (5-for-8) with two
doubles, a home run, five runs scored, and four RBI. He got on base
at a .769 clip and had a 1.250 slugging percentage.
OF Pierce Fly, Jr., Texas-Dallas
Fly was 6-for-9 (0.667) with three walks and was a major part of
the Comets' weekend road sweep of nationally ranked Mary
Hardin-Baylor. Fly scored three runs and added three RBI against
the Cru.
OF Corey Jensen, Sr., Whittier
Jensen hit for the program's first cycle in the modern era
Saturday lifting the Poets to a critical doubleheader sweep over La
Verne. In game one he was 5-6 with two runs scored and four runs
batted, picking up the most difficult piece of the cycle, a triple,
in his final at bat. For the three game series he batted .429 with
six hits in 14 at bats with a double, triple, and two home runs.
Had an on base percentage of .500 and had a slugging percentage of
1.071.
DH Cory Karagjozi, Jr.,
Gettysburg
Karagjozi finished 7-for-11 (.636) in a doubleheader sweep at
Centennial Conference foe Ursinus, pushing the school-record
winning streak to 16. Making his first start at designated hitter,
Karagjozi drove in three runs, and scored twice. He slugged .909
with a double and triple.
SP Stephen Shunk,So., Centre
Shunk recorded three firsts in his collegiate career with a
complete-game, three-hit, 10-0 shutout win over Sewanee Sunday. The
complete game, shutout, and win are all firsts for the second-year
hurler. Shunk allowed only two runners to advance as far as second
base. The walked only one batted with six strikeouts.
SP Alec Palioca, Sr., Wheaton (Mass.)
In his only start of the week, Palioca tossed a complete game
shutout against Babson yielding just two hits and no walks
alongside five strikeouts. Palioca also faced just one batter over
the minimum in the 1-0 win for the Lyons.
SP Trevor Cannella, Sr.,
SUNY-Maritime
Cannella pitched the second no-hitter of the season for
SUNY-Maritime. Cannella tossed seven hitless innings on 84
pitches with one walk and two strikeouts. Cannella also pitched a
perfect inning of relief in a 14-3 win over NYU-Poly.
RP Matt Bertuch, Sr., Swarthmore
Matt Bertuch picked up two wins and a save while being nearly
untouchable over four relief appearances this past week. The
senior, who held opponents to an .071 batting average, threw a
combined nine scoreless innings in which he struck out eight and
yielded only two hits.
