The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in
its third season of recognizing the top performers at each of nine
positions from the previous week. Players are selected from
nominations from their school's sports information directors. This
is the ninth Team of the Week of the 2014 season.
Games of April 7-13, 2014
C Jake Wylie, Sr., Linfield
Wylie drove in a team-leading 10 RBIs, including six alone in one
game, as the top-ranked Wildcats swept Pomona-Pitzer by a combined
score of 37-11. He totaled three extra-base hits as part of a
4-for-10 (.400) performance and also drew four walks for a .533
on-base percentage.
1B Mitch Geers, Jr. Marietta
Geers batted .500 (9-for-18) in two OAC doubleheaders. Geers tied
Marietta and OAC records with three doubles in a game against Mount
Union, adding a pair of home runs against No. 12 Heidelberg. He
scored eight runs and drove in 10 on the week.
2B Colin Fiekles, Jr., La Roche
Fiekles hit .750 (12-for-16) as La Roche went 4-0 during the week.
He hit five doubles and two home runs (1.438 SLG%). Fiekles was
responsible for 24 runs, scoring 10 and driving in 14.
SS Ryan Williams, Jr., Rowan
Williams batted .560 (14-for-25) as Rowan went 4-1 on the week. He
scored 11 runs and drove in 10, Among Williams' 14 hits were two
doubles and a triple for a .680 slugging percentage. Williams went
all five games without an error.
3B Raul Shah, So., Johns Hopkins
Shah hit .611 (11-for-18) the past week with a 1.056 slugging
percentage to help Johns Hopkins notch three wins. Shah was
especially impressive in Saturday's doubleheader with Swarthmore,
blasting a home run in each game with three runs and three RBI.
Shah has also been a steady presence in the field for the Jays at
third base with a .958 fielding pct. over the past week.
OF Chris Conklin, Fr., Manhattanville
Conklin hit an impressive .565 at the plate (13-for-23) as
Manhattanville finished a packed week, 5-1. He had four doubles, a
triple and a home run. He scored 10 runs and drove in eight RBI.
Conklin walked three times, compiling a .593 on-base
percentage.
OF Mike Kielbasa, Jr., Gettysburg
Kielbasa hit .625 (10-for-16) with seven runs and six RBIs while
slugging 1.062 in a 5-0 week for Gettysburg, helping the Bullets
push their winning streak to 21. He hit safely in every game and
finished with multiple hits in each of the team's last four
outings.
OF Joe Krasny, Sr., Dominican (Ill.)
Krasny batted .522 (12-for-23) on the week in a record setting
weekend. Krasny broke a Dominican single-game record as he blasted
three home runs in game two of doubleheader with Lakeland. Krasny
also set the Stars' single-game records for total bases (14), runs
batted in (8) and runs scored (5). He has 12 RBI and 11 runs
scored.
DH Chris Bernard, Sr., Southern
Maine
Helping the Huskies go 5-0 last week, Bernard hit .600 (12-for-20)
with seven runs scored, seven doubles, one home run and 11 RBI. He
compiled a 1.100 slugging percentage and had multiple base hits in
all five games. He also picked up the win on the mound in the
Huskies' win over Husson.
SP Eric Hungerford, Jr., Gettysburg
Hungerford threw a three-hit shutout and faced the minimum 27
batters in a 2-0 victory over Dickinson. He picked off two runners
and induced a pair of double plays, and while retiring the final 13
batters, did not allow the ball to leave the infield. Hungerford
did not walk a batter and struck out eight.
SP Brendyn Karinchak, Jr., Oswego St.
Karinchak threw a complete-game one-hitter to help the Lakers
outlast Oneonta for a 2-1 win on Friday. The junior struck out 13
Red Dragon batters on the day without allowing a single walk. It is
the third-straight game that Karinchak has went at least nine
innings on the mound.
SP Josh Makler, Jr., Redlands
In the Bulldogs' second win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Makler
pitched a no-hitter, complete-game victory to become the first
Bulldog to do so in at least 15 years in the history of the
Redlands program. He also threw a career-high 11 strikeouts against
the Stags.
SP Matt Mantione, Jr., Kean
Mantione tossed a 12 inning complete game shutout. He allowed just
five hits (four singles) with no walks, striking out 13.
RP Evan Janifer, So., Rochester
Janiffer made four appearances during the week, went 2-0 and
recorded two saves for Rochester. He pitched a total of 5.2
innings, yielded just one hit (.063 OPP AVG), one run (unearned),
and one walk while striking out four batters. His five saves in
2104 ties for second in school history for saves in a single
season.
