The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in
its third season of recognizing the top performers at each of nine
positions from the previous week. Players are selected from
nominations from their school's sports information directors. This
is the tenth Team of the Week of the 2014 season.
Games of April 14-20, 2014
C Hayden Tsutsui, So., Carleton
Tsutsui hit safely in all seven games this week, batting .500
(13-for-26). He scored nine runs with seven RBI. His week included
a .581 OBP and featured four doubles and two home runs for an .885
slugging percentage. He cut down 2-of-3 runners attempting to steal
during the week.
1B Brendan Howell, So., Bridgewater
(Va.)
Howell hit safely in all five games this past week for a .526
batting average (10-for-19). He finished the week with three home
runs and two doubles (1.105 slugging percentage). Howell scored
four times, driving in eight.
2B Louis Reyes, So., Keystone
Reyes led Keystone to a 5-0 week with eight runs scored, and three
RBIs. he batted .474 (9-for-19) on the week with a .526 slugging
percentage.
SS Michael Polcyn, Jr., Ripon
Polcyn homered in three consecutive games enroute to a .611
batting average (11-for-18). He had 10 RBI and scored eight
runs.
3B Nate Simon, Sr., Gettysburg
Simon batted .500 (10-for-20) in a 3-2 week for No. 24 Gettysburg
as he batted safely in every game. Simon scored four runs with four
RBI.
OF Nick Fisher, Sr., Linfield
Fisher homered twice in game three as part of a .583 (7-for-12)
hitting performance to lead top-ranked Linfield to a series victory
over rival George Fox that secured the NWC crown for the Wildcats.
The senior led the team in slugging (1.167) and on-base (.625)
percentages, drove in four runs, scored five times and was
defensively perfect in right field.
OF Matt Hanson, Jr., Moravian
Hanson helped the Greyhounds to a 4-0 week as the team clinched
the top seed in the 2014 Landmark Conference Tournament. Hanson hit
.526 with 10 hits in 19 at-bats. He scored seven runs and drove in
seven more runs, with a double and a homer for a .895 slugging
percentage.
OF Thomas McKenna, Jr., St. Joseph's
(Brkln)
McKenna provided a spark at the top of the lineup for the Bears,
hitting a sizzling .545 (12-for-22) with ten runs scored and ten
RBI. He had 12 stolen bases on the week, stealing three bases in
three consecutive games. McKenna also finished with three doubles
and two triples to end the week with a .864 slugging
percentage.
DH Brandon Clark, Jr., Benedictine
Clark batted .385 (5-for-13) as he lead Benedictine to a 4-1 week.
He had two doubles and two homers for a 1.000 slugging percentage.
Clark accounted for 11 runs, scoring two, driving in nine.
SP Ben Jernigan, So., Berry
Jernigan recorded 16 strikeouts and had a complete game shutout as
Berry won at Centre, 4-0, on Friday night to clinched second place
in the SAA. Jernigan scattered three hits and allowed just one
walk. The 16 strikeouts ties the most by any NCAA Division III
pitcher this year.
SP Trey Martin, Sr., Wheaton (Ill.)
Martin turned his third consecutive shutout in a 3-0 victory over
Millikin on Saturday. He set a school single-game record with 15
strikeouts. Has not allowed a run in 29 inning, the seventh longest
streak in Div. III history.
SP Jayme Monroe, Jr., Mississippi
Col.
Monroe tossed a complete game, one-hit shutout in a 10-0 win over
Howard Payne. He struck out seven batters with no walks. Monroe did
not allow a Howard Payne base-runner to reach second base in the
game.
RP Aj Konopaski, Jr., Pacific Lutheran
Konopaski pitched in all four of Pacific Lutheran's wins this
week, totaling 4.2 one-hit innings with seven strikeouts and no
walks. The NCAA Div. III national leader in saves with 12 saves,
surpassed Pacific Lutheran's single-season saves record of 11.
