The Team of the Week is D3baseball.com's weekly honor roll, in its sixth season of recognizing the top performers at each of nine positions from the previous week. Players are selected from nominations from their school's sports information directors. This is the second Team of the Week of the 2017 season.
Games of February 13-19, 2017
C Devin Skelton, Sr., Berry
Skelton hit .462 (6-for-13) on the week with five runs and four RBIs. He also posted a .533 on base percentage, as well as a .615 slugging percentage. In the field, Skelton also finished the weekend with 19 putouts, as well as four assists with zero errors, posting a perfect fielding percentage for the Vikings.
1B Seth Hagan, Fr., Centre
Hagan hit a sizzling .727 (8-for-11) with a home run, six runs batted in, six runs scored, a pair of stolen bases and a walk in his debut weekend with the Colonels. The freshman posted a .786 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage, helping Centre earn a three-game sweep of Coast Guard to open the 2017 campaign.
2B Steven Figueroa, Sr., Cortland St.
Figueroa batted .778 (7-for-9) with a triple, two walks, six RBI and six runs scored in two wins for top-ranked Cortland at 24th-ranked Salisbury. He also handled eight fielding chances (six at second, two at third) with no errors.
SS Willie Freimuth, Sr., Carleton
Freimuth went 4-for-8 (.500) with a double, hit by pitch, two runs scored and three RBI from the top spot in the lineup as the Knights swept Minnesota-Morris. Freimuth delivered the game-winning RBI in both games. He finished with a .556 OBP and .625 and also worked a scoreless frame out of the pen to close out the nightcap.
3B Tommy Massari, Sr., Lewis & Clark
Massari hit .667 (6-for-9) in all three of Lewis & Clark's games in a 2-1 series win against George Fox, the first series win over George Fox in at least 10 years. The senior third baseman accounted for nine runs, scoring four and driving in five. Massari walked four times for a .714 on-base percentage.
OF Michael Mule', Sr., Stevens Institute
Mule' reached base in five consecutive at bats to open the 2017 season, including a double and a solo home run against nationally-ranked Kean. Mule' followed up his impressive season opener by singling and scoring a run in a 5-3 victory. He finished the week 4-for-7 (.551) with two runs and one RBI. On top of his impressive start at the plate, Mule' robbed a Kean' batter of extra bases in center field at a key point in the game that kept Stevens within striking distance.
OF Griffin Stanley, Sr., Eastern Mennonite
Stanley reached base safely seven times from the leadoff spot in EMU's doubleheader sweep of Juniata, finishing .667 (6-for-9). Stanley scored five runs with three RBIs and three stolen bases.
OF Rocco Wilcox, Sr., Guilford
Wilcox hit .615 (8-for-13) with two doubles and two triples in the Quakers' 3-0 week, extending his hitting streak to six games.He scored six times and drove in two.
DH Stewart Laws, Fr., Guilford
Laws had six hits in seven at-bats in Guilford's 3-0 week, which extended the Quakers' winning streak to four. He led the team in batting average (0.857) and RBIs (4) for the week. Laws scored twice over the three games.
SP Trey Rampy, Jr., Berry
Throwing six innings in the contest, Rampy earned the win on the mound over Emory & Henry College on Saturday. Rampy allowed only two hits in the contest, while striking out four Wasps, leading the Vikings to a 3-1 week. In the victory, Rampy held his opponents to a mere .105 batting average against, posting a perfect 0.00 ERA in the outing. He also added a double play on the mound in the victory.
SP Mike Thomas, Sr., Christopher Newport
Thomas carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning while earning his first victory of the season during a 6-1 win over Ferrum on Friday. During the game, the senior struck out five before surrendering a no-out double in the seventh, which broke up his shutout and no-hit bid. Despite the hit, he exited the game after allowing just one run on one hit over 6-plus innings of work
SP Jackson Weeg, Sr., Emory
Weeg was masterful on Saturday afternoon, setting the Emory single-game school record with 18 strikeouts as the Eagles defeated Washington & Lee University, 7-3, at Chappell Park. The Woodstock, GA native recorded at least two strikeouts in each of his eight innings on the mound including striking out the side in both the fifth and eighth innings. In eight innings of work, he allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and walked just one to collect his first victory of the year.
RP Nick Ferngren, Jr., Rhodes
Ferngren came in relief for the Lynx in a 4-4 game against Piedmont and struck out a career-high 10 batters in four innings of work, allowing only one hit and earning an 8-4 win over the Lions. This was his first career win for the Lynx.
RP Zeph Walters, Sr., Stevens Institute
Walters began his 2017 season on the mound in a big way, striking out eight of the 14 batters he faced, allowing only one hit and a walking one over 3 1-3 innings, to pick up the save in the Ducks 5-3 victory over Old Westbury. At the plate, Walters collected a pair of hits with a walk.
