John Schulmeister basted a two run homer with two outs in the
bottom of the ninth to hit for the cycle and give the Austin
College baseball team a 7-6 victory over visiting LeTourneau
University on Tuesday night at Baker Field. Schulmeister also
picked up the win in relief as the ‘Roos improve to 4-13
overall this season.
The Jackets jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first, but the
‘Roos would square things up in the bottom half of the inning
on RBI singles from Josh Coughennower and Schulmeister. The
‘Roos would take a 3-2 lead in the second when Will Schommer
scored in an attempted double steal.
LeTourneau grabbed the lead again in the top of the fourth with a
pair of runs, and the lead would grow to 5-3 in the fifth on a
double by Andrew Doerrfeld. Schulmeister doubled home a run in the
bottom half of the inning to cut the margin to one, and the teams
traded runs in the seventh, this time with Schulmeister tacking on
an RBI triple to make it 6-5 heading into the eighth.
That remained the score heading into the bottom of the eighth, and
with a man on first and a 1-1 count, Schulmeister took the third
pitch of the at-bat deep over the scoreboard in right field for the
dramatic walk-off victory. Schulmeister finished the game going
4-for-5 with five RBI and also pitched 4.0 strong innings in relief
to get the win, surrendering one unearned run on five hits with
three strikeouts.
Chase Muder, Mason Leech, Coughennower, Todd Takabuki and Schommer
each had two hits as the ‘Roos pounded out 15 hits as a team
in the win.
