More news about: Widener

Rick Kazigian threw a no-hitter in game two for a 4-0 Widener win, following a four-hit game by fellow senior Jason Ferrie (Royersford, PA) in game one for a 4-1 victory, to sweep the three-game Commonwealth Conference series against Arcadia for the second straight season.

Kazigian (4-2) was on his game over seven innings.  He walked Kyle Jackson to open the contest and then retired 21 straight hitters that included six strikeouts.  Kazigian induced 11 groundouts and four flyouts to become the first Widener player to toss a shutout this season.

Widener (17-11, 7-5 CC) got on the board in the first inning with a two-out home run to right by senior Sean Saverio (Hatboro, PA), his first of the season and 10th career.  Junior Brendan O’Brien (Coatesville, PA) should have been on first for the home run after being hit in the shoulder with a pitch, but the home plate umpire said that he leaned into the pitch and issued him with a strike instead of ball four, which resulted in a strikeout.

The scoring continued for the Pride in the bottom of the second inning.  Junior Dennis Hocker (Coral Springs, FL) got things started by working the count to a full boat, and ultimately a base on balls.  Senior Bill Hollingsworth (Drexel Hill, PA) then ripped a double off of the blue monster in left field, moving Hocker to third.  Junior Matt Hone (Newtown, PA) singled to right-center, scoring Hocker.  Sophomore Kyle Summers (Mohnton, PA) earned his first career RBI at Widener with a single through the right-side of the infield to score Hollingsworth for a 3-0 contest.

Widener’s last scoring inning occurred in the third.  Senior Dan Sieracki (Cherry Hill, NJ) led off with a walk, stole second base and advanced to third on a high throw from catcher Jerry Smith.  Hocker drew his second walk of the game and Hollingsworth hit a hard ground ball that resulted in a 6-4-2 double play, but scored Sieracki for the Pride’s only unearned run between the two games.

Jordan Hofferman (4-1) allowed four runs – three earned – and six hits over six innings for the Knights (11-16, 5-7).

Arcadia put the first run of the doubleheader on the board in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Justin Simpson hit a single to Ferrie on the mound.  Jay Zehring then hit a left-center double to bring home the run.

On the flip-side of the inning, Widener was able to gain the run back.  Also with two outs, Saverio became the first base runner for the Pride by drawing a four-pitch walk, followed by another walk to Sieracki.  Hocker hit a single to left field to easily score Saverio for a 1-1 tie.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Hone started a rally with a leadoff infield single followed by his fourth stolen base of the season.  Summers bunted Hone over to third. Another walk thrown by starting pitcher Steve Romond resulted in a pitching change for the Knights, bringing in freshman Steven Sciortino as the visitors third hurler of the game.

With men on first and third, O’Brien hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring Hone home.  Saverio hit a triple down the right field line that scored Michael Riverso (Philadelphia, PA) from first.  With two outs, Sieracki hit a ground ball single up the middle to score Saverio standing up, giving the Pride a 4-1 lead.  The runs scored by Hone and Riverso were both charged to Arcadia’s second pitcher, Tyler Guentter (0-5), who suffered the loss.

In Arcadia’s last at-bat of game one, Ferrie (3-1) had a one-two-three inning with two flyouts and one groundout.  He finished the game with four hits and one earned run allowed over seven innings, to go with two walks and two strikeouts.

Hollingsworth had a great defensive play at first base in the top of the third, when Simpson lined into a double play. Hollingsworth reached up into foul territory to snag the line drive and dove on the bag with his glove to get the second out of the double play.
