Southern teams get in openers

Trevor Harlos drove in two runs for the second straight game, but Concordia (Texas) fell to Lubbock Christian by a 9-4 decision on Saturday, Feb. 2 at Tornado Field.

After dropping its first two games of the season, Chapman won in convincing fashion, defeating the Trinity (Texas) Tigers, 11-1 at Hart Park. The Panthers tallied 14 hits after collecting just seven hits in the first two games of the series.

Occidental opened the season with a pair of wins on Day 1 of a two-day, four-game series at Austin. Joseph Kling went six innings with just two hits, two walks and two earned runs against him in game one. Scott Hong was 5-for-7 on the day with four runs scored and three RBI.

Texas Lutheran opened its 2013 campaign with 8-7 and 15-1 road wins over University of Dallas. At Crusader Field, Jeff Spillane and aaron Aleman picked up pitching wins, and Sean Kisler saved game one with 1-2/3 innings of perfect relief. For the offense, Ryan Hill and Derek Kanas had three-run home runs. Klaus Bohrmann went 6-for-8 with two RBI in the doubleheader.

A five run eighth inning lifted Greensboro to a road victory over Berry on Saturday 8-6.  Greensboro trailed 5-2 after seven innings before the bats got rolling. Originally scheduled as a doubleheader, the nightcap fell victim to the elements as rain halted the action during the bottom of the third.

Eastern Mennonite is off to a successful start in the Ben Spotts era, as the Royals swept a pair of seven-inning games at North Carolina Wesleyan, 3-0 and 4-3.  EMU is 2-0 and plays a single game at Ferrum on Sunday.

Averett opened its campaign with a pair of wins at Hampden-Sydney. The Cougars held off the Tigers 4-3 in the opener, then won 11-3 earn the sweep. JImbo Newcomb had five hits on the day for the Cougars.

Methodist opened 2013 with a bang, scoring nine fourth-inning runs to cruise to a 15-7 win over Roanoke at Armstrong-Shelley field in the season opener for both teams. Tyler Younger and Chris Power both finished with three runs driven in to lead the Methodist offense. Brian Kluge was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored for the Maroons.

Josh Bailey's three-run double in the fifth inning lifted visiting Piedmont to an 8-4 win at Guilford in both teams' season opener. Bailey also made a great catch in right field to end a Quakers' scoring threat in the sixth inning.

Although the Southwestern Pirates lost the first game of the doubleheader 5-3 to the Schreiner Mountaineers, the Pirates managed to get their first win of the season in the RJ Thomas era, winning the second game 7-4.

Sul Ross State split with Southwest (N.M.), losing game one 4-5 and winning the nightcap 7-5. The Lobos used a run in the sixth to tie the game and scored twice in the final inning to complete the comeback win.
