CNU scores eight in comeback win

The 8th-ranked Captains trailed 7-0 headed into the bottom of the ninth inning during the second game of a USA South doubleheader on Saturday, but escaped with a sweep after an impressive rally. Junior Justin Weaver capped the eight-run ninth with a game-winning double to left center field, leading CNU to an 8-7 win over the Ferrum College Panthers (1-3, 0-2). In the first game, CNU (2-0, 1-0) shut out the Panthers, 3-0, behind junior transfer Austin Chrismon (1-0).

Covenant got its season underway with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Berea. The Scots used extra innings in game one before Braeden Lane singled home the winning run in the eighth inning of a 4-3 win then, in game two, three different Covenant pitchers combined to shutout the Mountaineers 6-0.

Pomona-Pitzer finished off a win from Friday's suspended game, 3-1, and then captured both ends of a scheduled doubleheader, 4-3 and 8-4, to take three wins off of Pacific (Ore.) at Alumni Field. The three victories enable the Sagehens to start the season at 3-0, while Pacific opens at 0-3.

Evan Grovenstein hit a three-run home run to lead Birmingham Southern to a second straight triumph over Mississippi College to start their 2013 season 2-0. The Panthers won the game 8-2.

Texas Lutheran improved to 5-0 overall with 10-2 and 6-4 wins over Texas Wesleyan. At TLU's Katt-Isbel Field, Derek Kanas collected five hits, scored three runs and drove in three in the doubleheader. Kanas went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored in the opener. He added three hits (including another double), scored three times and had an RBI in the late game.

Tyler Pfeffer drove in eight runs to lead visiting Whitworth to a win and a tie in a non-conference baseball doubleheader at California Lutheran.  The Pirates won the opener 13-8 and the second game finished 7-7 when darkness forced the game to end after nine innings. Pfeffer went 7-10 at the plate with a double and a home run for Whitworth (1-1-1).

The top six batters in the Guilford College batting order accounted for all the Quakers' RBIs in Guilford's 11-4 win over Bluefield State. D.J. Phillips led the way for the Quakers, going three-for-four with two RBIs.

Puget Sound scored a dominating 12-0 win over NCAA Division II St. Martin’s in their season-opener. Christian Carter and Jeff Walton combined to drive in nine runs while Matt Robinson and Jarrod Beiser combined for the shutout on the mound.
