Opening weekend continued on Friday

Louisiana College was looking to start off the season with a bang. The Wildcats did just that in their season opener, as the Wildcats defeated the Texas College Steers 5-1 in front of a live and energetic crowd on Friday night. Senior pitcher Seth Webster, who transferred at the semester break from Nicholls State, had a solid outing in his debut, as he went six innings, gave up six hits, struck out three and gave up his only run on a game-tying solo home run. Junior pitcher Jacob Trahan was outstanding in relief, as he earned the save after going three innings, giving up only one hit and no runs.

Southwestern dropped their season and home opener on Friday evening, falling to Schreiner University 9-7. The Schreiner Mountaineers got off to a quick start, but Southwestern made it an interesting game later in the innings but could not come away with the win.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps opened the season with a 4-1 loss against Division II foe Azusa Pacific at Arce Field. Austin Gomez and Clayton Brock were solid in relief for CMS going three innings and 2.2 innings respectively, giving up no runs, and striking out three.

Tanner Barron struck out 13 batters through eight shutout innings, allowing just four hits in the win over Chapman.

Trinity (Texas) improved to 2-0 this season with another solid pitching performance in a 7-1 victory over Chapman. The Tigers gave up just one run on five hits to Chapman snapping a streak of 17 innings without allowing an earned run to start the year.  Trinity out-hit Chapman 11-5 in the game.

Emmett Crisp went 2 of 4 with an RBI as the Lobos were defeated by University of the Southwest 3-8 at Jake Williams Stadium. Ray Gutierrez took the loss for the Lobos. Gutierrez allowed five runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings pitched. He recorded five strikeouts, while walking two batters.

Austin Rupert pitched five strong innings of relief and Trevor Harlos drove in two runs, but  Concordia (Texas) dropped its season opener to Lubbock Christian by an 8-3 score at Tornado Field.
