Pitt-Bradford head baseball coach Bret Butler won his 300th career game as the Panthers swept Medaille 1-0 and 5-4 Friday afternoon to open AMCC play.
It was the first games for the Panthers since March 18, the last day of their Spring Break trip in Fort Myers, Fla.
Aaron Cressley flirted with a no-hitter in game one as the Panthers won 1-0. It was the 300th win for Butler, who started the program back in 1999.
Cressley allowed just one base runner through the first four innings-a walk in the third. He struck out the first batter to open the fifth, but Zack Shiesley followed with a slow chopper down the third base line that rolled to a stop for the Mavs only hit of the game.
Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Cressley threw a wild pitch that bounced to the backstop yet catcher Kirby Craft's throw to the plate beat the runner for the third out.
With one out in the seventh, Cressley permitted a walk, but induced the next batter into a game-ending double play. He finished with nine strikeouts, one off his career-high, and walked three.
Jason Burkes doubled in the Panthers' only run in the fourth. Pitt-Bradford nearly added an insurance tally in the sixth, but stranded the bases loaded. The Panthers totaled just four hits and were 1-6 with runners in scoring position.
Pitt-Bradford erased a four-run deficit in game two, scoring twice in the seventh inning, to win 5-4 in extra innings.
Medaille jumped ahead 4-0 with runs in both the second and third innings. Michael Pascarella's sacrifice fly in the third and RBI groundout in the fifth sliced the lead in half.
Jake Potter walked to lead off the Panthers' half of the seventh, Burkes followed with a double down the left field line, and Pascarella was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a force out at home, Johnny Phelps hit a sharp grounder to the Medaille third basemen that deflected off his glove and scooted into foul territory. Potter and Burkes came around to score, tying the game at four runs apiece.
The Mavericks escaped the jam after Scottie Frisina struck out and Sam Gardner grounded into an inning ending fielder's choice.
Bill Emerick quickly retired the side in order in the top of the eighth setting the stage for the final frame. Craft coaxed a leadoff walk, and Potter reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and two pitches later, Craft scored on another wild pitch for the walk-off victory.
Emerick earned the win, his first of the season. Starter Zach Bican went seven innings, allowing four runs, one earned, on eight hits. He walked one and struck out a season-high six.
Burkes and Potter each finished with two hits apiece, and Craft scored two runs.
Pitt-Bradford improves to 6-6 on the year and travels to Fredonia State Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader.
