Carroll University let head baseball coach Derek Hassell go, two days after an April 15 incident at Ripon College in which his brother allegedly assaulted an umpire following a 6-4 loss by the Pioneers.

According to the police report, a copy of which was obtained by D3sports.com, Ripon athletic director Julie Johnson pursued him as he fled the scene, obtaining a license plate number which was reported to authorities.

The umpire, John Kunz, suffered a broken tooth. His glasses were also broken in the confrontation.

The university did not cite why Hassell was no longer coaching. When contacted by D3sports.com, a department spokesperson said, "We do not comment on personnel matters."

Hassell's Pioneers were 8-10. He was 35-50 in two-plus seasons as Pioneers head coach. Carroll has had just three winning seasons since 1960.

Hassell was replaced by Peter Jennings, the offensive coordinator of the football team.
