Late runs lead to wins on Monday

Thiel senior designated hitter Jarod Nanna's walk-off RBI single to the wall in left field powered the Tomcats to a 10-9 victory over Penn State Behrend Monday afternoon at Tomcat Park. Nanna's game-winner was his lone hit against the Lions. Fellow seniors Doug Farley and Eric King each finished 4-for-6.The Tomcats pounded out 19 hits in the come-from-behind win, tying their effort on March 15 in the 14-0 win over Hiram for most hits in a nine-inning contest this season.

Coe completed a four-game sweep over the  Luther Norse with a 6-3 victory in game two of a doubleheader on Monday. In the opener, the Kohawks scored two runs in the eighth and stranded a Norse runner in the final inning to escape with a 2-1 win.

No. 10 Wheaton (Mass.), claimed an 11-5 victory over Trinity (Conn.) in non-conference action on at Sidell Stadium. Senior right-handed pitcher Corey Laliberte scattered seven hits over five innings, yielded two runs (both earned), walked four and struck out one batter. Sophomore Mike Bisceglia, freshman Eric Dumas and junior Ryan Grant all pitched at least one scoreless inning in relief for the Lyons.

Mike Massaro rapped a two-run single in the top of the 11th inning, and Tyler Vieira pitched three innings of effective relief to lead Coast Guard to a 9-7 extra-inning victory over Westfield State. Nolan Gallagher led off the top of the 11th with a single to left-center and Ed Sella reached safely on a sacrifice bunt throwing error. A balk moved the runners up a base then Massaro delivered his game-winning hit down the rightfield line.

Senior center fielder James Reyes went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, three RBI, a home run and a stolen base to lead Johnson & Wales to a 9-4 win over Rhode Island College at Anchorman Field. Gian Bianchi picked up the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with three strikeouts in seven innings of work.

Richard Stockton snapped a five-game losing streak and recorded their first NJAC victory of the season with a 6-1 win over Rowan in a makeup game that was postponed on Friday. Mike Bush extended his hitting streak to 11 games with three singles and added a stolen base and a run scored. Stockton lefty Adam Warburton pitched a complete game, scattering nine hits and striking out two without walking a batter.

Kyle Henshaw pitched a complete-game three-hitter and Jonathan Mason hit a pair of two-run homers to lead Bridgewater (Va.) past Ferrum, 19-2, in a non-conference matchup. Henshaw was in command throughout as he struck out eight and walked just one. After allowing a one-out single in the first to Matt Reynolds, Henshaw retired 14 in a row before Jeffrey Swoope led off the sixth with a homer down the right field line. Ferrum added another run on a throwing error in the sixth.

George Fox completed its sweep of the Puget Sound on Monday, taking the extra inning win from Saturday’s halted game and a 16-6 win in the series finale. Jeff Walton had two hits and three RBIs for the Loggers but the Bruin  had three players with at least three RBIs.  The Loggers and Bruins picked up Saturday’s halted game tied at 4-4 heading into the 10th inning. Matt Zeller led off for the Bruins with a single, was sacrificed over to second and came around to score on another single from Zac Israel for a 5-4 Bruin lead.  JB Eary singled with one out to put the Loggers in business in the bottom half. Both Stephen Kelsey and Connor Savage drove long fly balls into the gap but both were tracked down just in front of the warning tracks to end the game in the Bruins favor.  The momentum from their extra inning win carried over into the series finale as the offense exploded for 16 runs. Eleven of those runs came in the fourth and fifth innings to put the game well in hand.
