DiSanto, Mauro earn ninth honors

Record-setting Brian Mauro of DeSales University and closer Alex DiSanto of the State University of New York-College at Old Westbury have been named the ninth and next-to-last 2013 NCAA Division III National Hitter and Pitcher of the Week for April 22-28 as voted on by a panel of D-III members of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Mauro, a senior first baseman from Merrick, N.Y., was outstanding in leading the Bulldogs to a 3-1 record, batting .733 (11-for-15) with four doubles, two home runs, eight runs scored, 10 RBIs, a .778 on base pct., and a 1.400 slugging pct.  He had four multi-hit games, starting with a 2-for-4 with two RBIs vs. Scranton.  In the first of a three-game set with King’s, he was 3-for-4 with two home runs, four RBIs and three runs scored.  In a twinbill on Saturday, he was 6-for-7 with three doubles, five runs scored and four RBIs.  In the process, he broke the single-season record for doubles in a season at DeSales, recording his 24th of the year.  Mauro is now hitting .500 with five home runs, 51 RBIs, and 24 doubles to lead the Bulldogs in those categories.

DiSanto, a junior right-hander from New Hyde Park, N.Y, was a perfect 4-for-4 in save opportunities as he tossed six scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and fanning nine.  He began the week with three innings of one-hit relief, striking out five, in a 10-0 win over CCNY, then threw one inning with two strikeouts to preserve a 5-2 win over Lehman.  He notched a pair of saves on Apr. 27 in the Panthers’ 4-1 and 3-2 victories over SUNY-Purchase, fanning two in the last inning of the opener, as Old Westbury secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Skyline Conference championship.  He has tied the program’s single-season record with 12 saves.  DiSanto was the Skyline Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season.
