Teams qualify on final regular season weekend - D3baseball

Denison sophomore Ian Barry tossed a one-hit, seven-inning gem to help the Big Red sweep the NCAC crossover series with Kenyon on Sunday. Denison won the third and final game, 7-1.

St. Scholastica swept Bethany Lutheran by scores of 3-1 and 6-2 to close out the regular season and capture the UMAC title. The Saints have won the conference regular season title every year since 1997. The Saints finish unbeaten in league play for the second straight year and have won 46 straight UMAC regular season games.

No. 2-ranked St. Thomas moved closer to securing the program's 11th consecutive MIAC championship with a doubleheader split at Bethel. UST won the opener 9-4 but lost game two, 2-0. UST had a 19-game winning streak end in game two as BU's Matt Rowley threw a five-hit shutout. Steve Maher took the win and Mark Dominik added a save in game one. Dylan Thomas allowed just one earned run and struck out eight in six innings in game two but took the loss.

Washington & Jefferson completed the regular-season portion of its schedule with its eighth-straight victory, a 7-4 triumph at Penn State-Behrend. Junior first baseman Tyler Schultz paced the Presidents with a 2-for-5 performance at the plate, three runs batted in and one run scored against the Lions. The Presidents will now set their sights on the PAC Tournament beginning Thursday at Ross Memorial Park.

No. 9 ranked Marietta finished the regular season with a 9-3 win at regionally ranked La Roche. Senior Jordan Grilliot had four hits as the Pioneers banged out 14 total in the game. Marietta fell behind early, 2-1, but then scored eight unanswered runs for a 9-2 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. La Roche added a run in their last at bat for the final 9-3 score.

For the third time in as many games of its NCAC Cross-Over Series with Ohio Wesleyan, Wooster put a six-spot on the board during one inning, as it was the fourth that was the difference in the Fighting Scots' 12-6 victory at Art Murray Field. Already having swept the first two games of the series, thanks to a six-run third inning of the 11-3 win in the opener and a six-run seventh of the 15-5 victory in Saturday's nightcap, to earn a bid to the NCAC Tournament, Wooster capped the regular season with its sixth-straight win.

Oberlin punched its ticket to the NCAC Tournament for the first time in program history on with a series-deciding win, 9-6, over the Wittenberg Tigers at Carleton Davidson Stadium. The Yeomen jumped out an 8-0 lead over Wittenberg, and held on as the Tigers comeback bid fell short.

Senior Tucker White went 4-for-5, including a double and home run, with six RBI to lead the Southern Maine's 20-hit attack as the Huskies rolled to a 17-2 victory over the visiting Suffolk Rams on Senior Day at the USM Baseball Stadium. The Huskies finished the regular season with a 33-7 record and will be the top seed and host for the upcoming Little East Conference tournament that begins Wednesday.

Ray Yong and Jeff Dsida each had four-hit days as Carleton posted a pair of one run victories, sweeping Macalester by tallies of 5-4 and 4-3. The duo went a combined 6-for-8 with four runs scored and two RBI in the opener. Dsida opened the contest with a double and scored one out later on a sacrifice fly. The Knights trailed 2-1 in the third inning when Yong delivered a two-run single and scored another run later in the stanza.

On Senior Day, Trine split their final pair of regular season games with Kalamazoo winning game one 11-7 and falling in game two 3-2. The Thunder assure themselves of their second straight winning season as they enter the MIAA Tournament.

Northwestern salvaged a split with its rare Sunday doubleheader against Northland as the Reynolds Field crowd saw its best day of baseball yet this spring. Northland won the first game 10-5 before the Eagles struck back in a 14-4 Game 2 final.

Scranton rallied for one of the biggest wins in the program’s nearly 70-year history. Trailing by three with nobody on base and down to their final out, the Royals rallied to force extra innings before defeating Catholic, 6-5 in 11 innings, in an elimination game at Talbot Field. The win puts the Royals into Monday’s championship against Moravain, which defeated the Royals earlier in the day, 8-1, in a winners’ bracket game. Scranton will need to defeat the Greyhounds twice on Monday to win the title.

The Yellowjackets closed out its 2013 regular season with a pair of games agianst UW-Stout knowing that they needed at least one win, and possbily two in order to stay in WIAC playoff contention. They accomplished their mission, picking up a victory, but it was anything but easy as the Blue Devils gave them everything they could handle and then some in the doubleheader. A pitcher's duel in the first game carried over into the second game, and the Yellowjackets, who didn't mount much of an offensive attack throughout the day, got the bats rolling at the end of game two and rallied from behind to salvage a split on the day and the weekend.

Bates swept Williams in a NESCAC non-division doubleheader at Bobby Coombs Field. In game one, Bates went through its lineup three times in the first three innings to build an early 10-0 lead ans went on to win, 12-4. In game two, the teams traded early runs and Bates broke the game open with a five-run third, and eventually led the game, 11-4.
