Patriots win ASC championship

TYLER, Texas -- The UT Tyler Patriots defeated Louisiana Coll., 10-4, on Sunday afternoon to win the 2013 American Southwest Conference Baseball crown and an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Championships. The league title is the third overall for the Patriots and the first since 2010.

UT Tyler (35-10), who batted first, started the game with the first five batters reaching base, including four hits.  

Issac Tijerina notched an RBI on a single to left field, followed by a RBI single by T.J Martin, scoring Jeff Kosta.

After going up 3-0,  Tijerina picked up another RBI with a single, followed by a Kevan House fielder's choice, making the score 5-0 after two innings played.

In the fourth, Tijerina was the man again, tripling in Kosta to make the score 6-0 Patriots.

Louisiana College (26-19) answered back in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a three-run homerun by Matt Scott, making the score 6-3.

UT Tyler put the game away in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs on a pair of doubles by Kosta and House.

The Patriots would add two-more on a Will Allen double to left-center field, extending the lead to 10-3.

Pitcher Jake Beam would take the mound for the Patriots in the sixth, giving up just one run in the seventh on a Cole Bagbey single.

The conference title is the third in UT Tyler program history, and also the first for head coach Chris Bertrand who is in his first year with the Patriots.

Tijerina was named championship tournament Most Valuable Player after finishing the weekend hitting .429 with six hits, four runs scored and five RBIs.  

Joining Tijerina with All-Tournament honors were third baseman T.J. Martin, designated hitter Kevan House and pitchers Tye Weber and Jack Barkley.
