HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology
baseball team took a pair of CUNYAC games against Yeshiva
University at Dobbelaar Field on Sunday to start the 2014 campaign
with a 2-0 record. In game two, Stevens combined to throw a
no-hitter between five pitchers, winning 13-0.
Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) picked up the win
in three innings pitched with five strikeouts. Sophomore
Daniel McIntyre (Lakeway, Texas), senior Mark
Poinsett (Ocean Gate, N.J.), Zeph Walters (Diamond
Bar, Calif.) and sophomore Greg Jakusik (The Woodlands,
Texas) tossed four perfect innings in relief with a combined nine
punch outs to complete the no-hitter. Walters and Jakusik each
struck out the side in their single inning out of the bull pen.
The Ducks struck first on a sacrifice fly from senior Dan
Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) that plated Nicholas
Sieber (Shrewsbury, Mass.) in their opening frame.
Sieber staked Stevens to a 2-0 lead with a solo shot to
right-centerfield in the bottom of the third and then junior
Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in Allen with
a single off the log of Yeshiva's pitcher. Sophomore Tyler
Bush (Bristol, Conn.) put the Ducks ahead, 4-0, on a base hit
to left that brought Mannello into score to cap off the inning.
Eight more runs crossed the plate for Stevens in the bottom of the
fourth to put Game Two out of reach, 12-0. The Ducks pounded out
seven hits in the frame, highlighted by an RBI triple from freshman
Michael Mule' (Boca Raton, Fla.).
The Ducks tacked on one more in the sixth on an RBI fielder's
choice from freshman Harrison Kaye (North Brunswick,
N.J) that scored freshman Nick Muglia (South Plainfield,
N.J.).
Yeshiva got on the board first in Game One on a solo homerun
from lead-off hitter Jake Frankel off Stevens starting pitcher
Peirce Marston (Silver Spring, Md.).
Marston threw two innings and allowed just that solo homerun with
three strikeouts.
Senior Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.)
reach base in the bottom of the first on a hit by pitch and then
stole second, but was stranded after the next three Ducks flew out
in the first offensive inning for the Ducks.
In the six-run bottom of the second, Mannello stroked the team's
first hit of the season with a double off the rightfield wall and
came home to score on a two-run homerun from junior Brian
Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.). Sieber belted the third
consecutive extra base hit of the inning with a double down the
line and moved up to third on a ground out by junior Marc
Calleo (Bayville, N.J.). Sieber was pushed home on a single
up the middle from sophomore Jonathan Toro (Sanford,
Fla.) to give the Ducks a 3-1 lead with one out. After Toro
advanced to third on a throwing error, he came home on another
infield error. The Ducks scored twice more on an RBI single from
Allen and a ground out from Walters that allowed Yano to score from
second.
Stevens scored two more runs on a stolen base and throwing error
that allowed Lowenstein to score and then Allen crossed the plate
on a double from Walters.
In the bottom of the fifth, freshman Michael Yorita
(Irvine, Calif.) and Calleo each singled to center to begin the
inning. Yorita scored on a ground out by Toro and then pinch runner
Kaye came home on a single by freshman Nolan Bennett
(Chatsworth, Calif.).
Junior Gary Boardman (Staten Island, N.Y.) tossed a
perfect third inning of relief with two strikeouts to earn the
Opening Day Game One victory. Sophomore Ryan Patterson
(Staten Island, N.Y.) was next out of the bullpen and tossed a
scoreless fourth with on punch out. Allen fanned two batted in the
fifth, while freshman Bret Viola (Carmel, N.Y.) struck
out the side in the sixth. Sophomore Robert Robbins
(Tallahassee, Fla.) tossed the seventh inning and recorded two
punch outs.
