The Tampa Rays made Pacific Lutheran's Trevor Lubking as the first D-III player taken in the 2014 MLB amateur baseball draft. Lubking was taken in the 14th round, 427th overall. The draft continues through 40 rounds.

Lubking led all of NCAA Div. III in strikeouts with 111, a total that broke his own Pacific Lutheran record of 102 set last season. He compiled a 6-2 record and a 2.12 earned run average while heading up the rotation as the Lutes set a program record with a 2.75 team ERA, shattering the 1968 record of 3.09. Lubking's ERA was the fourth-lowest by a PLU starter since 1972, and he added a save in his lone relief appearance. He posted five starts with three hits allowed or fewer and had three games with 13 strikeouts.

The trend of picking pitchers continued with J.P. Feyereisen, UW-Stevens Point and Steve Ascher, Oneonta State going in the next three rounds. Feyereisen was a 16th round selection (488th overall) of the Cleveland Indians and Ascher was taken in the 17th round by Tampa (517th overall). Corey Holmes, Concordia (Texas) was the fourth pitcher taken. Holmes was a 20th selection of the New York Yankees.

Hendrix outfielder Collin Radack was the first position player selected.  In the final selection of the first half of the MLB draft, the standout outfielder was selected by St. Louis.
