Montclair, NJ – Montclair State University has
announced the hiring of Jared Holowaty as its new head baseball
coach Holowaty becoming the 11th coach in program history. He takes
over for longtime mentor Norm Schoenig, who retired in May after 26
years.
Holowaty served as acting head coach of the Red Hawks this past
season after Schoenig underwent hip replacement surgery in
February. He led MSU to a 22-18 record and was named the New Jersey
Athletic Conference Co-Coach of the Year after guiding Montclair
State to a 13-5 record and third-place finish in the league
standings. The Red Hawks were picked to finish eighth in the 2014
NJAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
Montclair also reached the championship round of the NJAC
Tournament for the first time in eight years capping off a
late-season surge that saw the Red Hawks capture 14 of its last 19
games, including 10 of its final 11 conference contests. MSU also
boasted one of the best pitching staffs in the league registering a
team ERA of 2.55 during that run and put three of its hurlers on
the All-NJAC Team in lefties Michael Macchia, Dylan Papa and John
Silvestri, the latter being named the Fireman of the Year by both
the NJAC and New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association. In
addition, freshman outfielders Phil Scott and Ryan Long were named
to the NJCBA All-Rookie Team.

Montclair State University," said Holowaty. "The storied baseball
tradition here at MSU was built by many outstanding coaches and
student-athletes throughout the years and I look forward to
continuing on their passionate efforts."
Holowaty came to Montclair State following three seasons as the
head coach at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington producing
10 Northwest Conference All-Conference players during that span for
a program that had just three the 10 previous seasons. He also
spent four years at the University of Maine where he served as the
Black Bears' recruiting coordinator in addition to working with the
hitters and infielders. As recruiting coordinator, his first two
classes ranked in the top three in the northeast and top 70 in the
nation respectively. In his first season in Orono, while working
with the hitters, Maine's offense ranked in the top-25 nationally
in batting average (15th), scoring (18th), triples per game (14th)
and slugging percentage (24th).
Holowaty is also no stranger to the New Jersey Athletic Conference
having served as a graduate assistant at The College of New Jersey
under head coach Rick Dell during the 2004 and 2005 seasons. He was
the Lions' recruiting coordinator, outfield coach and sub-varsity
head coach.
Holowaty played at Eastern Connecticut State University and helped
the Warriors capture the 2002 Division III National Championship.
He was an All-New England selection in 2000, named to the Little
East All-Conference First Team in 2000 and 2001 and an
All-Tournament selection in 1999.
The following year, Holowaty became an assistant coach at ESCU for
his father, Bill, the all-time winningest coach in the history or
New England intercollegiate athletics. The team finished 43-9 and
placed third in the 2003 NCAA Division III Baseball
Championship.
Holowaty is a 2002 graduate of Eastern Connecticut State
University with a degree in economics and a minor in sports
management.
