ODAC spoils CAC openers with sweeps

No. 6 Salisbury opened its season with a 13-6 win over Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday at the SU Baseball Field. Senior Brett Collacchi received the start at pitcher, in a game that saw nine Sea Gulls take the mound on the day. Collacchi retired the first three batters for the Griffins, striking out the first two.

Two games into the 2015 season and the Captains already have a pair of one-run victories. The second came in thrilling fashion on day two of the Methodist Diamond Invitational, as Christopher Newport scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to rally past McMurry in a 5-4 final. Junior third baseman Connor Henderson delivered a 4-for-4 performance at the plate, and junior starter Blake Ream tossed 5.2 strong innings in his debut for the Captains.

Rhodes split against the University of the Ozarks as both teams opened their 2015 campaigns. The Eagles took a 6-5 game two victory behind a three-run seventh inning. Rhodes topped the Eagles 9-5 in game one.

Hampden-Sydney opened its season taking two wins over Ferrum in its opening day double header at Ty Cobb Ballpark. The Tigers took game one in a 2-0 decision, with the pitching combination of Reggie Johnson, Zach Perkins, and Zach Whitaker combining to allow just two hits in seven innings. The Tigers tallied 12 hits to Ferrum's five for a 4-2 win to complete the sweep.

Sophomore catcher Kevin Jordan broke a 7-7 tie with an RBI single in the seventh and scored the eventual winning run as Pomona-Pitzer took the first game of a doubleheader from Whitworth 9-8 at Alumni Field. Whitworth bounced back to win the nightcap 10-2 and come away with a split.

Junior Nick Maiolo went 6-for-6 with four runs and six RBI as Randolph-Macon opened the 2015 campaign with a doubleheader sweep of St. Mary's at Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park. The Yellow Jackets took the opener 6-2 before routing the Seahawks 14-0 in the nightcap.

Tony Gennusa's eighth-inning triple drove in the winning run in Texas Lutheran's come-from-behind 8-6 win over Texas-Tyler, capping off a two-win day after the Bulldogs defeated Whittier 10-0 earlier. The Bulldog offense has now averaged 10 runs per game in the three games and notched 15 hits in all three contests.

Josh Howard pitched six strong innings and Methodist took advantage of nine Lynchburg errors in defeating the Hornets, 8-2 at Armstrong-Shelley Field.  Howard picked up his first win of the season as he allowed two runs (1 ER) on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Willamette broke open two close games with a pair of late inning scoring outbursts, as the Bearcats continued their season-opening series at Claremont-Mudd Scripps with a doubleheader sweep over the Stags at Arce Field. Willamette won the first game 9-2, and took the second contest 6-3. The Bearcats improved their record to 3-0 on the season.

Covenant swept both games of a doubleheader from Emory and Henry, concluding a successful opening weekend. The Scots won the first game 6-0 and held on to take the second game 7-5. Scott Gillespie had four hits and drove in four runs, while KC Simons had four runs scored, three walks, two hits, and two RBIs.

Beneath gray, rainy skies No. 10 Cal Lutheran returned to action against Puget Sound of the Northwest Conference. The home team took the only game of a scheduled doubleheader by a score of 7-3 despite heavy rains falling over the last three innings. Following a nearly two hour weather delay the teams were unable to take the field for the second game, which has been officially cancelled.

Berry defeated Guilford 9-3 at William R. Bowdoin Field. The Vikings displayed strong offense with 15 hits while shutting down the Quakers for six innings. Alex McGill led the surge for Berry by going 5-5 with four singles and a double. He recorded a stolen base, plated two RBIs and scored once. Grayson Tuttle went 2-4 with a double to lead the Quakers.

It took Sul Ross State five games to get their hitting in gear. The Lobos, who led the American Southwest Conference in hitting last season, exploded for 17 hits and 21 runs in winning the nightcap of their doubleheader, 17-6 against host Schreiner at Mountaineer Field Saturday. Schreiner won the opener, 5-2.

Washington and Lee opened the 2015 season with a sweep of Marymount at Barcroft Park at George Washington University. The Generals scored eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to earn a come from behind 11-8 victory in game one, and then sophomore pitcher Tom Concklin gave up one hit in four innings as W&L won game two, 3-1.
