Dickinson loses no-hitter

Winter Haven, Fla. – The Dickinson baseball team improved to 1-3 on the season, winning the nightcap of a double-header with Beloit College on Sunday. The Devils suffered a pair of losses to West field State on Saturday, falling 6-4 in eight innings in the season opener and 4-0 in game two.

Beloit claimed a 1-0 decision in game one, despite a combined no-hitter from Charlie Gaines (Phoenix, Md./St. Paul's) and Matt Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga), who each threw three innings, combining for six strikeouts.
 
The Red Devils recorded just one strikeout but were held to three hits on the day. Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy), Steven Haynes (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) and first-year Austin Sumners (W. Pennington, N.J./Pennington School) each recorded hits for the Red Devils. Sumners added a stolen base as well.

Beloit pushed across a run in the third inning. Tyler Peacock led-off with a walk and advanced to second when Mark Stephens walked, following a strikeout. The runners advanced on a balk and a fielder's choice scored Stephens with Peacock being thrown out at home.
 
Dickinson put a mark in the win column, claiming game two against Beloit, 4-1. Junior Jimmy Robertson (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) surrendered just one run in six innings of action, allowing one hit while recording seven strikeouts to earn the win. Junior Tyler Clausen-Wolf (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) added a strikeout in one inning of relief to earn the save.
 
The Red Devils scored three unearned runs in the third inning. Haynes reached on an error and moved to second as Dolan reached on a single. Phil Werner (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's) flew out, moving Haynes to third.

Dolan stole second, followed by a single from Matt Primavera (Erdenheim, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy). Primavera advanced to second on an error and kept coming around to score behind Dolan and Haynes, putting Dickinson up, 3-0.
 
The Devils tacked on a run in the fifth. Haynes drew a walk and moved to third on single from Werner. Primavera singled to drive in the run, stretching the lead to 4-1.

A lead-off walk, single and wild pitch set up a lone run for Beloit in the sixth inning. Mike Gulve came in to score on a ground out to put the Buccaneers on the board.

Primavera went 3-for-3 in the nightcap, scoring a run and driving in another. Haynes scored twice while Dolan went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a stolen base. First-year Travis Nardin (Montville, N.J./Morristown Beard) added a hit and a stolen base. Brian McCloud (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) and Mitch Helmandollar (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) recorded hits as well.
