Texas-Dallas returned to its home away from home, AirHogs Stadium in Grand Prairie, Thursday afternoon and chisseled out a 4-1 non-conference win over Texas Wesleyan. The Comets (4-3) broke a three-game skid with the win, riding the arm of starter Aaron Bach (1-1), who gave up just one unearned run in the win. UTD, on the other hand, took advantage of three unearned runs in the game, scoring twice on passed balls charged to the Texas Wesleyan (8-7) catcher.
Washington and Lee split a doubleheader at North Carolina Wesleyan. The Generals (7-4) won the first contest, 5-4, while the Battling Bishops (8-3) took the second game, 6-4. In the opener, senior pitcher Kyle Tipping (Green Lane, Pa./The Hill School) threw 5.2 innings and earned the victory to improve to 2-0. He gave up four runs on eight hits, while striking out three. In the second game N.C. Wesleyan had an answer to every foray by the Generals, putting the game away with an insurance run in the sixth.
Saint Mary's (Minn.) has developed a bit of a habit during its first four games of its spring trip. Fortunately for head coach Nick Winecke, it's turning into a very good—very high-scoring—habit. For the third straight game, the Cardinals offense put up huge numbers—including a four-run second and a three-run third—as Saint Mary's outslugged Elmira 12-6.
Lyndon State opened up its season with a 2-0 win then dropped the night cap 7-5 in extras to Houghton. Jeff Williams went the distance for the Hornets to pick up the shutout win. Williams surrendered just four hits while striking out six. Lyndon's defense was superb behind Williams going errorless in their first time on the diamond. In the second game of the doubleheader, Houghton was able to plate two runs in the top of the tenth inning and take out Lyndon 1-2-3 in the bottom of the tenth to take the game 7-5.
Samuel Warren tallied three hits, including a home run, and Brendon Canavan drove in two runs to lead Bates to a 9-4 win over Whittier. Connor Speed tossed five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits to pick up the victory. He walked only one batter and struck out six.
