Four players accounted for two or more hits as New Paltz State exploded for 13 runs on 15 hits, giving first-year head coach Arlan Freeman his first win in his first game at the helm on as the Hawks defeated host No. 10 Randolph-Macon 13-3 in the 2017 season opener. Randolph-Macon suffered their first loss of the season after starting the season with six straight wins.
Webster won its season opener, 5-3, over Rhodes in Memphis, TN. Gorlok pitchers struck out 14 Lynx in the contest and Matt Wollnik supplied the offense with a home run and double in the contest. Josh Fleming went six innings of work, allowing six hits, two walks, and one earned run while striking out eight. Johnny Lord pitched 2/3 of an inning in the seventh before Brandon Smith took over. Smith would go an inning and a third, striking out three, and picking up the win. Kyle Uhrich came on to close out the ninth, and whiffed all three Lynx he faced swinging for the save.
Christopher Newport sophomore first baseman Nicholas Baham continued his torrid start to the 2017 season, putting together a career-best performance in a win over Susquehanna. CNU improved to 5-5 after defeating the River Hawks 8-1 at Captains Park, behind a 4-for-5 effort at the plate by the team's offensive leader, including a pair of two-run home runs.
Cairn opened the 2017 season with a sweep of the visiting Norwich Cadets. The Highlanders scored early in game one and cruised to an 11-4 victory before fighting through a pitcher's duel in game two and taking a 4-2 victory. Cairn swiped ten bases on the day with six players with at least on theft.
Bryan Smith, Devon DeRaad and the Occidental bats got hot in a 12-6 win over co-defending SCIAC Champion Cal Lutheran at Anderson Field in the first game of the three-game series between the teams this weekend. Smith, who's tearing the cover off the ball so far this season, was just a triple away from hitting for the cycle, going 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.
The No. 15 Concordia-Chicago Cougars would strike first, but the Concordia-Texas Tornados would answer with five runs in the bottom of the third all with two outs. That would be enough coupled along with good pitching for CTX to spoil the season opener for CUC by a final score of 8-2.
Lancaster Bible opened its 2017 campaign as the Chargers split a doubleheader with John Jay at Charger Field. The Bloodhounds took game one, 9-5, but the Chargers fought back to win game two, 9-2 in five innings. The doubleheader split marks the second straight year the Chargers have opened their season with a win and a loss.
The Trinity (Texas) Tigers opened up a three-game weekend series with a 5-4 extra-inning win over Sul Ross State. Trinity loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the 12th inning, then Scott Walters drew a five-pitch walk to drive in Logan Morrison for the game-winning run. Morrison nabbed an infield single with one out to jump-start the Tigers.
The 2017 regular season got underway for Southern Vermont with the Mountaineers making history by defeating Gallaudet 4-1 and then 8-1 for the sweep at Hoy Field. The front-end victory was the first time SVC won its season opener since the 2013 campaign. By taking the day-cap, Southern Vermont started the year at 2-0 for the first time ever as an NCAA-accredited program; the last time the Mountaineers were 2-0 was in the 1988-89 season when they opened at 3-0 as a member of the NAIA before the team garnered its NCAA status for the spring of 1993.

Hampden-Sydney improved to 5-0 on the young season while winning its opening game of the Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament in convincing fashion, using 19 hits in a 15-1 win over Southern Virginia. Tyler Blevins led the offense with a game-high three hits. On the mound, freshman Chase Mayberry pitched eight innings while allowing just one run on seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts. Michael Flanagan pitched a scoreless ninth.
Junior centerfielder Brett Kuchera collected four RBIs, including a two-run home run to help spark his team from a four-run deficit, and sophomore southpaw Steven Bloyed hurled 5.1 stellar innings in long relief to earn the victory as Rutgers-Camden opened its season with a 7-5 win over Mitchell. The game was part of the three-day Armstrong Invitational, hosted by Methodist. A solid start by Elmira did not hold up as a handful of late miscues allowed the tounament host Methodist Monarchs to roar from behind for a 9-4 victory on their home field in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
The bats appeared to be in mid-season form on Friday as Buena Vista began its 2017 campaign with a pair of lopsided victories down in St. Louis over both Fontbonne and UW-Platteville, respectively. Kendall Candor finished 3-for-4 at the dish with five RBI and two runs scored in the 14-2 win over Fontbonne. Jake Lewis got the start on the hill and the 10-0 shutout of UW-Platteville win with six strong innings, allowing just the one hit, striking out five and walking three.
Bridgewater (Va.) erased a 4-0 deficit with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and defeated Messiah, 9-5, in non-conference action. Luke Paczewski continued his torrid early-season hitting with a 3-for-5 day at the plate.
No. 20 Texas-Tyler opened American Southwest Conference play with a 12-11 victory over Howard Payne in Brownwood. Offensively, Trenton Buchhorn had three hits and three RBIs for the Patriots. The win went to Evan Kissinger, who got the Patriots out of the fifth inning and pitched the sixth for his second victory of the season. Reese Read pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save of the season.
Mary Washington swept a doubleheader from Penn State Altoona at Dickinson Stadium. Game scores were 9-2 and 11-3. Stephen Johnston had four hits, two walks, two runs scored and five RBI for the Eagles.
Emory & Henry erned their first win of the season in seven tries as they pounded out 17 hits on the afternoon,. The Wasps defeated Johnson by a 13-5 score at Porterfield/DeVault Field in the Wasps 2017 home opener. Gavin Felty led the way with a three-for-four performance at the plate with three runs and two RBI.
