ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team defeated Salisbury University 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon behind a combined no-hitter by Zach Cooney and Zach Youngberg.

This is the first combined no-hitter for the Knights and the first no-hitter at home. Neumann had a no-hitter by Ray Schmoltze on March 27, 2010 in a 12-1 win against Centenary in the first game of a doubleheader in Hackettstown, N.J.

Cooney started the home opener and went 7.0 innings. He allowed one unearned run and struck out five. Youngberg pitched the eighth and ninth innings.

Evan Emerich and Duncan Balara each had a pair of hits in the game. Chuck Trentler and Curt Yenchik scored two runs each. Eric Bergman knocked in two runs.

The Sea Gulls scored their unearned run in the top of the first as the second batter reached base on an error and moved to second with one out. As Salisbury attempted to steal third, the Knights threw the ball away and the runner came around to score for the early 1-0 lead.

Trentler opened the bottom of the first with a single. The next two batters recorded outs. Cody MacNair walked for two men on base with two outs. Kyle Weller knocked a single to center to score Trentler and tie the game.

In the fourth inning, Jon DelValle reached on an error with one out. Yenchik followed with a double for runners at second and third. Balara hit a single to score DelValle. Sam Banks followed with an RBI groundout for a 3-1 Knights lead.

Heading into the top of the sixth, Youngberg had retired 10 batters in a row. After retiring the 11th batter, the Sea Gulls got a baserunner by a hit batter. Following a fly out, Salisbury walked and was hit by another pitch to load the bases. Cooney was able to work out of trouble and keep the 3-1 lead and the no-hitter going.

The Knights responded by batting around in the bottom of the sixth inning. Yenchik led off the inning with a walk. After a Sea Gull pitching change, Balara singled. Banks sacrificed both runners over to second and third. Trentler walked to load the bases with one out. Bergman laced a single into left center to score Yenchik and Balara. Emerich singled to load the bases again. After another Salisbury pitching change, MacNair walked to send home Yenchik and give Neumann a 6-1 lead.

Cooney sent the Sea Gulls down in order in the seventh to finish his afternoon. Youngberg completed the game and the no-hitter with a hit-batter and fielder choice in the eighth and sent Salisbury down 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth.

Neumann (3-4) is right back on the field tomorrow as it heads to Rowan for non-conference action beginning at 3:00 PM.
