In the second split-squad series of the Gene Cusic Classic, St. Joseph's (L.I.) took down No. 13 Johns Hopkins, 8-7, on Wednesday morning at the Player Development Complex in Fort Myers, Florida. Lou Doria had four of SJC's 14 hits. The Golden Eagles also played two games with Colby where they lost game one 3-1 and won game two 7-6, ending the tripleheader 2-1.
No. 25 Otterbein let a five lead slip away but righted the ship, walking off to a 7-6 win over regional rival Manchester. Bryan Stopar opened the ninth with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch to set up a runner on third with no outs. Christian Chiero's single ended the contest, plating Stopar.
Carthage split doubleheader action on Wednesday against Luther, falling in game one, 5-1, before the best offensive and pitching performances of the season in an 18-1 game two win. Luther played perfect defense in game one but committed a season high eight errors in the blowout loss to the Red Men.
Christopher Newport sophomore Joseph Cutchins saw just one pitch in his final at-bat. It was enough to deliver an extra-inning game-winning smash to the right field wall, as the Captains won their eighth straight game, 5-4, over Salisbury. The Captains improved to 7-0 mark in conference play, taking over sole possession of first in the CAC.
Senior Zach Morgenstern allowed just one hit and fanned eight in 8.1 innings, leading Augustana to a 3-1 win over Cornell at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. Eight of the nine men in the Viking lineup had a hit. Morgenstern improved to 4-0 with the win and Casey Weir earned his second save of the season.
No. 4 UW-Whitewater ended its 2017 spring trip in walk-off fashion in a 7-6 triumph over Union at Lake Myrtle Park. After the Dutchmen tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the ninth, the Warhawks loaded the bases and with two outs, junior Ryan Makuski fought his way to a full count and was hit by the 3-2 pitch to bring home the game-winning run.
Senior pitcher Jake Mintz worked his way to his first career save, pitching the final four innings of Washington University's 7-6 win on the road over Greenville. The Panthers scored five runs in the sixth inning before Mintz helped the Bears out of the jam to secure the victory. On the night, Washington totaled nine hits as seniors Austin Darmawan, Ben Browdy and sophomore Auggie Mense concluded the game with two hits apiece.
Earlham scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Wittenberg 10-9 in walk-off fashion at Randal R. Sadler Stadium. Tied at 9-9, Wittenberg intentionally walked Brennan Laird to set up runners at the corners. Senior Eric Elkus, a D3baseball.com Team of the Week honoree, hit a slow roller to shortstop. Wittenberg got the force out at second base, but Elkus beat the throw to the bag, turning a potential inning-ending double play into a walk-off win.

Senior Chase Stopyra fired a three-hit, nine-inning shutout while junior Chuck Probst went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead Gettysburg to a 10-0 victory over Penn State Altoona in its home opener at a blustery Kirchhoff Field. It was the longest career outing and the first career shutout for Stopyra, who faced just two batters over the minimum. After retiring the first nine batters of the game, Stopyra yielded just three singles and a walk while striking out a career-high seven. Of his 113 pitches, 79 were strikes.
No. 1 Shenandoah earned its second ODAC victory of the season with an 11-5 triumph over Bridgewater (Va.). Shenandoah scored three runs in the first, and after Bridgewater rallied with single runs in the first and third, pulled away with three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and three more in the ninth. Senior Jake Loew was responsible for those final three runs as he hit his league-leading seventh home run of the season, crushing an Eagle pitch over the right-field fence.
Centre earned a 3-0 triumph over visiting Spalding in a non-conference matchup at Gary Wright Field. Sophomore pitcher Aaryn Chandler earned his first win of the season on the mound for the Colonels, tossing six shutout innings and limiting the Golden Eagles to just three hits with three walks. Senior pitcher Alex Edwards added three innings of scoreless relief to collect his first save of the year, allowing three hits with a strikeout.
Strong pitching by Alex Marrs propelled Wesley over the St. Mary's (Md) Seahawks, 8-3 in a CAC contest. Marrs sat down 14 Seahawks in eight innings to set a new career high. Marrs only walked one batter while giving up three runs and nine hits to earn his CAC-leading fifth win of the season.
Sophomore Tyler Hopman tossed a complete game using both his weapons as Kean edged Stevens, 4-3. Hopman allowed seven hits and three runs with eight strikeouts and two walks. He tossed the first six innings righty and finished the contest with his left. Hopman retired the first 12 batters his faced before giving up a leadoff single to Zeph Walters on a 3-2 pitch to start the fifth.
A four-run third inning propelled Denison to a 6-2 win over Marietta at Don Schaly Stadium. After giving up two runs on four hits in the first two innings, Denison pitcher Perley Provost allowed just two hits over the final seven innings to notch the complete game victory. Provost allowed two runs on six hits and struck out eight in 9.0 innings of work.
