Sophomore Billy Dimlow twirled seven scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts while senior Brian Hernandez collected four hits at the plate with two RBIs as top-ranked Emory blanked Piedmont, 5-0, on Saturday afternoon at Chappell Park. Dimlow returned to form Saturday, firing seven excellent innings to earn his third win of the season. He allowed just six hits and three while racking up double-digit strikeouts for third time in five starts. Dimlow coasted throughout the outing, only running into trouble in the sixth inning but escaping unscored on. Hernandez went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, a stolen base while finishing a triple shy of the cycle to power the offense.
Cortland took two on Saturday , 5-4 and 12-6 from Case Western Reserve in a set played in Bridgewater, Virginia. Cortland starter Jeff Cooke earned the win in game one, while Payten Boice pitched the final three innings to pick up his second save of the campaign. In the nightcap, Cortland broke a scoreless tie with a six-run fourth inning, capping off the scoring in the frame with a three-run home run by Marcos Perivolaris to roll to the win
No. 4 Birmingham-Southern earned a 5-4 walk-off win against Oglethorpe after an hour and 45 minute rain delay pushed the start time back. BSC swept their series against the Stormy Petrels with the win. Four Panthers had multiple hits on the day, led by Jacob Drescher and A.J. Hunt. The pair went 2-for-4 at the plate. Drescher also scored two runs, including the game winner.
A five-run ninth inning broke things open for Suffolk as the Rams stretched a 4-3 lead at the top of the final frame to a 9-3 victory over No. 6 Ramapo apart of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Rams open the season 2-0 for the second straight year and first time since matching that feat in the start of 2005. Both wins have come against teams in the Top 10.
While much more was at stake than the last time that the Concordia-Chicago Cougars and UW-Lacrosse Eagles met on the baseball diamond (last May in the NCAA III Midwest Regional), today's regular-season game at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Florida figured to be a good early-season test for both top 25 programs. In the end, the #7 Eagles prevailed 6-2 over the #25 Cougars behind the pitching of their All-American hurler Caleb Boushley and some timely hitting.
LaGrange swept a USA South doubleheader from Huntingdon at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium. The 10th-ranked Panthers won 8-4 and 6-3 to also complete a three-game sweep of the Hawks. LaGrange got outstanding relief pitching from junior Jonathan Fleckenstein and sophomore Austin Brown. Both pitchers threw three scoreless innings in picking up their first saves of the season. They held Huntingdon to three hits in the six total innings, while not walking a batter and striking out four.
No 9 St. John Fisher scored two ninth inning runs to force extra frames but CJ Gerahart's base-loaded single in the 11th inning made no. 20 TCNJ a 3-2 winner. It does not get any easier tomorrow for either team as St. John Fisher takes on no. 18 Marietta and TCNJ faces no. 7 UW-La Crosse.
Senior Stuart Brown had five hits and drove in five as the 11th-ranked Randolph-Macon took two from Emory & Henry to begin ODAC play on Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park. The Yellow Jackets combined for 27 hits and 22 runs. R-MC took the opener 13-2 and won 9-2 in the nightcap over the Wasps.
No. 15 Texas-Dallas earned its second straight series win to open ASC play after splitting a pair of games Saturday afternoon at Sul Ross State. The Comets took Saturday's opener, 11-4, before falling in the series finale, 16-15, in 10 innings. The Comets pounded out 13 hits for an 11-4 victory in a seven-inning contest to open the doubleheader at Sul Ross State. Game two looked like a blow out after the Comets, 11-run 2nd inning but the Lobo offense awoke and rallied for a 16-15 victory in extra innings.
No. 17 Oswego State defeated the Montclair State Red Hawks in both ends of a doubleheader, 9-4 , 6-0. Both games were seven inning affairs. Kyle Simmons led all hitters with five hits on the day.
No. 22 Pacific Lutheran scored twice in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 win over Pacific in Tacoma. Pacific rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to take a 4-3 lead on the strength of a three-run sixth inning before the Lutes came back to plate a pair in the come-from-behind win.
Bridgewater (Va.) opened conference play by sweeping a doubleheader from the no. 23 Roanoke Maroons. The Eagles won the opener 6-3 and shut out the Maroons in the second game, 4-0. The Eagles received quality starts from Tristan Daywalt and Jordan Showalter to key the sweep. Daywalt pitched six scoreless innings in the first game, allowing six hits while striking out three. He did not walk a batter. Jordan Showalter worked seven shutout innings and allowed just four hits to pick up the win in the second game.
Mount Union shook off a Friday loss to DeSales to open their OAC season with a sweep of no. 24 Baldwin Wallace, sweeping th Yellow Jackets 4-1, 5-0. Phil Mary and Noah Skladan both pitched into the eight inning, limiting an offense that was scoring 10 runs a game to just one run on the day.
