Nate Tholl picked the perfect time to hit his first career home run at Webster as the senior rightfielder hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning over the left field wall here Sunday afternoon to give the Gorloks a 5-4 win over sixth-ranked Concordia-Chicago in the 2018 season opener for both teams at GSC Credit Union Ballpark. Tholl's homer made a winner out of Gorlok sophomore hurler Shane Donoavan, who pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief to earn his first collegiate victory. Donovan was the third pitcher of the game. The game winner homer by Tholl was needed after the Cougars, who advanced to the NCAA Division III World Series last season, scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning thanks to a single, three walks, a hit batsman and a wild pitch to tie the game at 4.
Sophomore Dan Harwood tattooed a pair of massive home runs to hitter-friendly right field at Art Murray Field, and 14th-ranked Wooster eecorded a plethora of big defensive plays during its season-opening 17-9 win over visiting Mount Union. Wooster, which boasted Div. III's highest scoring offense a year ago, showed every indication that it has the potential to be among the division's leaders once again, as the Fighting Scots scored in five of their eight trips to the plate, and each time tallied multiple runs.

Franklin put on an offensive display on their way to an opening day sweep of Penn St.-Behrend. Senior Frank Podkul belted four home runs and drove in seven runs on the day, which included a three-home run performance in game one. Ryan Bixler drove in six runs and Ryan Erlandson brought home four runs as Franklin took a 15-3 decision in game one and a 15-6 win in game two.
Hood stole a total of 19 bases during a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Brandywine, including a school record 13 in the opener. The Blazers won game one 7-0, then took the nightcap 11-5. The 13 steals are the most for a Division III team since the 2013 season. Brooks Warrenfeltz set Hood record with three stolen bases in the game one and Jordan Patterson had three steals overall on the day.
Junior Stephen Koester hit a RBI double in the 10th inning to provide Muhlenberg with a 5-4 extra-inning victory over Marymount. The Mules move to 3-0 for the 11th time in program history, including three times since 2012. The three wins earned Muhlenberg a trophy as champion of the Gallaudet Bison Baseball Classic. With the game tied at 1-1 through seven innings, sophomore John Serruto singled with one out in the eighth. Sophomore Billy Brittingham then homered to right to put Muhlenberg in front 3-1. The Saints rallied back for three runs in their half of the eighth, taking a 4-3 lead. The Mules then put two runners on with one out in the ninth before senior Eric Reitmeyer singled through the right side, scoring junior Justin Revel from second and tying the game and sending the game into extra frames.
Alma opened its season at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a matchup against the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Senior Matt Minaudo walked off on a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving Alma a 6-4 opening day victory. Sophomore Josh Riggs earned the first start of the year for the Scots. Riggs went six innings, striking out three, and left with one run earned.
Hanover got its season off to a good start as the Panthers defeated Augustana 6-2 and Capital 4-1 on day one of the team's annual winter break trip to Florida. It marks the second straight season Hanover has opened the season with wins in each of its first two games, and the fifth time in the last seven years the team has won it's season-opening game.
The Newbury offense stayed hot in the early going this year, piling up 16 runsas the Nighthawks completed the three-game sweep of the UMaine Presque Isle Owls with a 16-5 win at New England Baseball Complex. Nighthawks senior Mitchell Walsh finished 1-for-1 with a three-run home run. Senior Matthew Peluso batted 2-for-3 on the afternoon, including a double and scored twice. Owls sophomore Will Stinson batted 2-for-4 while sophomore Brad Patterson finished 1-for-3 with a triple.

Five pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout as Gwynedd Mercy opened their 2018 slate with an 8-0 win at Kean. Mike Di Ianni, Gino Tripodi, Liam Sullivan, Matt Carter, and Dave Tatoian combined for seven strikeouts and yielded one hit in just the second and third innings.
Offensively, Ryan Keen went 4-for-5 and was a home run shy of the cycle while Tatoian delivered a bases-loaded clearing double as part of a big seven-run third inning.
Ithaca wrapped up is season-opening trip to Virginia with a 13-6 victory over host Virginia Wesleyan at Kenneth R. Perry Field. With the win, Ithaca improves to 2-1 early on the in the campaign as the Bombers pounded out 15 hits in the contest. Webb Little went 3-for-4 in the game with three runs scored and two RBI, while Adam Gallagher was 3-for-5 with four RBI. Garret Callaghan and Sam Little each notched two hits in the win, while Callaghan scored three times and drove in two more. Sam Little plated three runs in the contest to go along with a pair of walks.
DeSales finished its weekend trip splitting a doubleheader with Oneonta. Senior Konner Schneider earned the win pitching one inning of scoreless relief and senior Andrew Schuler also pitched very well tossing six strong innings allowing seven hits and just one run, striking out three. In the nightcap the Red Dragons beat DeSales 3-1. The Red Dragons were aided by Dominic Lamonica hit a late innings home run to give the Red Dragons the lead 2-1. Junior Mickey Mullins went 2-4 in the game with a run scored.
No. 12 Shenandoah completed its opening week of the season with an 8-4 non-league win over Widener. Shenandoah scored two runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the third to jump on Widener, but the Pride didn't go away. Widener cut the deficit to just one run, 5-4, with two runs in the fourth and one more in the sixth off of SU starter Reeves Lowry and reliever Robert Klinchock. The Hornets then gave themselves some breathing room with a single run in the seventh followed by a three-run eighth. Junior Cole DuBois, the fifth Shenandoah hurler of the day, allowed one hit over the final two innings to earn his first save of the season.
Methodist completed a three-game sweep of William Peace with a 9-0 victory at Armstrong-Shelley Field. With the result, the Monachs have won nine-straight games and are the second team in D-III to 10 wins. Tristen Luck started on the mound and threw 7.0 shutout innings, scattered just three hits and struck out two for his fourth win. Luke Westmoreland was saddled with the loss after yielding four runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 7.0 innings. For the Monarchs, Ethan Austin, Martthias Carter and Parker Clayton were each 2 for 4 at the plate and all scored a run, while Carter drove in two. As a team, Methodist totaled 12 hits.

Lawrence split a nonconference doubleheader slugfest with Iowa Wesleyan at Lenz Field. Lawrence won the nightcap 10-7 after Iowa Wesleyan took the opener 26-24. In a wild opener, the teams combined for 50 runs and 51 hits in a game that lasted 3 hours and 33 minutes. Lawrence tied its school game record for runs and hits, set a school record with nine doubles and posted the second-most runs batted in with 22. Zach Rabideau and Mueller-Schrader both went 5-for-7, and Rabideau drove in five runs to lead Lawrence's 25-hit attack. Rabideau continued his hot hitting going went 3-for-4 with a double in the nightcap.
Christopher Newport scored 15 runs in the first five innings and rolled to a 15-6 win over nationally-ranked Oswego State, rounding out a dominating performance offensively this week. The Captains outscored opponents 47-7 in four games this week with a pair of shutouts and two games with at least 15 runs scored. Leading the charge was senior designated hitter Brandon Ginch, who broke out with a four-hit, six-RBI effort against the Lakers. Ginch was 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI doubles and a three-run home run. He set a new career high with six runs batted in while highlighting a 17-hit performance as a team. Junior transfer Seth Woodard extended his hit streak to 10 games with a powerful performance in the middle of the lineup, matching Ginch with a 4-for-5 line. Woodard smashed a two-run home run to open the scoring in the first and added and RBI double in the third inning. On the mound, Thomas Packert improved to 2-0 after striking out 10 in 5.0 innings of work. The 10 K's matched his career high after allowing just five hits in five frames of work. In relief, Jaret West gave up one run in 1.1 innings, followed by a strong effort by Logan Aylor. Aylor struck out three in 1.2 innings, followed by a clean ninth out of closer Joe Burris. Oswego State defeated Susquehanna 12-8 earlier.
Wesley split their two games in the final day of the Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament, hosted by Hampden-Sydney. The Wolverines opened Sunday with a 9-7 win over the Moravian Greyhounds but couldn't keep the momentum in the nightcap of the doubleheader, dropping an 8-4 decision to host Hampden-Sydney.
