There was no shortage of runs Wednesday night on the GNAC tournament. Fourth-seeded Lasell defeated fifth-seeded Norwich 16-3, and Johnston and Wales defeated Anna Maria 27-13 in the first round of the GNAC Tournament at Stein Field. The Lasers pounded out 18 hits in the victory, including five for extra bases. Junior David Marsell pitched seven solid innings to earn the win on the mound and went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. The 27 runs by Johnston and Wales are the most by a team in the GNAC Tournament, while the 40 combined runs trail only the 43 scored by Suffolk (22) and Saint Joseph's (21) in 2009.
Keystone avenged its only loss in CSAC action by holding off a late rally to defeat Gwynedd Mercy, 7-4. After dropping an 11-6 decision to the Griffins Monday at home, the Giants got a strong pitching performance today from junior Christopher Adams and home runs from junior Dakota McFadden and senior Eric Drzewiecki to improve to 27-8 overall and end conference play with a 15-1 record. The loss dropped Gwynedd Mercy to 16-12 overall and 10-4 in the CSAC.
UMass-Dartmouth senior Kenny Michae tallied a career-high five RBI to help the Corsairs overcome a pair of four-run deficits to defeat Tufts, 13-10, at the UMD baseball field. Sophomore Robbie Carillo (Melrose, Mass.) picked up his second win of the year, as his clean inning of work in the sixth preceded the Corsairs' go-ahead run-scoring frame.
Saint John's (Minn.) extended its win streak to 10 games with a doubleheader sweep, 8-2 and 4-1, at Carleton in Northfield. The Johnnies (26-5, 11-3 MIAC) batted .357 (20-for-56) on the afternoon and picked up complete-game performances on the mound from juniors Danny Kuh and Jake Dickmeyer.
Sophomore Dan Harwood's go-ahead grand slam on a 0-2 pitch in the top of the ninth inning woke up top-ranked Wooster, which went on to sweep aside Wittenberg 17-12 and 7-5 at Carleton Davidson Stadium in Springfield, Ohio. With the wins, Wooster guaranteed itself at least a share of the 2018 NCAC championship, and the league title is the Fighting Scots' conference-best 18th, and third straight. Wooster (33-5, 15-1 NCAC), which trailed 12-10 heading into the ninth inning, wouldn't go quietly, as junior Jacob Stuursma walked, and that at bat was followed up with back-to-back singles by sophomore Harry Witwer-Dukes and junior Michael Wielansky. After Harwood's 11th round tripper of the year pushed Wooster on top 14-12, junior Garrett Crum drilled an opposite-field single, and came in to score on a two-run shot by senior Drew Tornow. In all, the Scots sent 13 men to the plate in the inning, and eventually tacked on a seventh run when Wielansky worked his way out of a 0-2 hole to draw a bases-loaded free pass.
Six consecutive scoreless innings, coupled with a Dave Murphy game-winning three-run homer gave the seventh/eighth ranked Beacons a crucial 9-7 in-region win as they defeated Western New England University Wednesday evening at Monan Park.
In one of the wildest and higher-scoring college baseball games you will see in recent memory, it was Otterbein that prevailed with a whopping 19-18 victory in extra innings against No. 14-ranked and host Franklin during non-conference action. The Cardinals, improving to 27-10 on the year, used a monstrous 400-plus foot home run in the tenth inning from senior Pat Birrer to emerge with a notable victory amongst national-caliber teams. Franklin, now with a 33-3 record this spring, snap a 13-game winning streak despite overcoming an 11-run deficit in the middle innings.
Senior outfielder Brendan Pierce went 4-for-4 with a run, a double, a triple, four RBI, and two walks to lead the visiting Trinity Bantams to a 16-9 victory over the Union Dutchmen in nonconference action this evening at Shuttleworth Park. Trinity improves to 17-14 with its second win in as many nights, while the Dutchmen fall to 25-8 with their second setback in a row. Trinity will close its season with a home doubleheader against Wesleyan on Saturday.
