Pitching ruled the day as No. 17 La Roche swept a nonconference doubleheader from No. 25 Marietta Monday afternoon in the final regular season games for both teams. The Redhawks came from behind to beat Marietta, 2-1, in extra innings in game one. La Roche completed the sweep with a 3-1 victory in the nightcap improving to 31-8-1 on the season. The Pioneers heads into the postseason with a 26-14 overall record. Jay Novak sent game one into extras with a seventh inning homer and a Shane Roebuck homer walked it off in the ninth for a 2-1 La Roche win. Ethan Lewis was spot on in game two, pitching five no-hitt innigs before the bullpen came in to secure the the sweep.
Tied 5-5 in the bottom of the 13th inning, Zack Smith notched an RBI single to right field to give first-seeded Salve Regina a 6-5 walk-off win over fourth-seeded Endicott on Monday evening in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament at Reynolds Field. With the win, Salve Regina (25-13) will play No. 3 Western New England (29-13) in the CCC Championship Series from May 11-12. Western New England had little drama, defeating Gordon 17-2
Senior Hunter Hunt went 3-for-3 with a walk and a two-run homer with four RBI to lead St. Thomas to a 15-8 win over Gustavus in game one of Monday's MIAC doubleheader at UST's Koch Diamond. Gustavus secured the program's first playoff berth in 10 seasons with a 6-1 win in game two. Sam Archer threw a six-hitter for Gustavus (19-16 overall, 11-9 MIAC), which went 7-1 over the last week to tie for fifth place. The Tommies (18-16), who tied for third place with St. Mary's, is the No. 4 seed and plays No. 5-seed Macalester Thursday in a playoff elimination game at CHS Field. That winner plays top-seed St. John's Friday at in the double-elimination format.
Fifth-seeded Penn State Altoona topped fourth seed Pitt-Bradford 17-5 in game three of the teams' AMCC Tournament first round best-of-three series at the Kessel Athletic Complex. With the win, Penn State Altoona (17-19) will advance to the AMCC championship rounds – the league's final four – for the first time since the 2011 season, when the Lions went on to win the conference title. The Lions posted one of their most complete performances in their biggest game of the season. The bats continued to produce, as the team scored 17 runs on 11 hits. The pitching limited Pitt-Bradford to five runs on eight hits, and the defense committed just one error.
Plymouth State got a pair of strong starts to earn a sweep of Colby in a non-conference, seven-inning doubleheader at Coombs Field. Graduate student Dallas DeFrancesco tossed all seven innings in the opener, giving up just a single run as the Panthers earned a 2-1 win, while freshman JP Somers allowed just one run over six innings of a 7-1 victory in the nightcap. With the sweep the Panthers end the regular season with a 16-17 mark. PSU opens the Little East Conference tournament as the fifth seed with a game against second-seeded Eastern Connecticut State on Wednesday at UMass-Boston. PSU dropped both meetings with the Warriors during the regular season, losing a pair of close games, 7-4 and 6-5. Colby ends its season with a 7-25 mark.
Sending 17 batters to the plate and scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the third inning, the Augsburg closed its season with a dominating 16-5 victory over the UW-Superior in a season-ending nonconference game on Monday morning at Parade Stadium. Leading 1-0, Augsburg nearly batted through its order twice in the third inning, collecting 10 hits and scoring 11 runs. A run in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth gave Augsburg the runs necessary to end the scheduled nine-inning game via the 10-run rule in the seventh inning.
Baldwin Wallace finished off the regular season with a sweep of two seven-inning, non-conference games with 16th-ranked Adrian at Nicolay Field. Baldwin Wallace (28-12 overall) survived a late inning push by Adrian (30-10) to take game one by a score of 7-5 and completed the sweep with a 9-4 victory in the second game. The Yellow Jackets will have momentum coming into the OAC tournament, while Adrian heads to their tournament with a four game losing streak.
New York University closed its 2018 season with a 10-1 victory at host Stevens in Hoboken, NJ. NYU (28-12) benefited from a terrific start by senior captain Cameron Serapilio-Frank and took advantage of six Stevens (25-15) errors in the win. Serapilio-Frank tossed 8.1 innings, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out six to improve to 9-2 on the season. Jack Walter and Jonathon Iaione each had three hits to lead the NYU offense
Edgewood defeated Beloit 17-14 as both teams wrapped up their regular seasons. Between the two teams, 43 players saw time on the field including 21 Buccaneers. The Eagles changed pitchers each inning while seven Bucs took the mound Monday afternoon. Edgewood took advantage of two big innings, scoring nine in the fourth and five in the eighth to keep Beloit behind.
No. 20 Shenandoah celebrated its Senior Day with a 3-1 non-league baseball victory over Penn St. – Harrisburg. Shenandoah (31-10) scored two runs in the first and one in the fifth to earn the victory in the first-ever baseball meeting between the Hornets and Lions (31-11). Senior Jordon Edlund, drawing his first-ever start, had the game-winning RBI with a single to right center to score classmate Nick Goode from second base.
