Sul Ross State split Saturday's season-opening doubleheader with University of Dallas. The Lobos dropped an 8-5 decision in game one before pounding out 12 hits in a 16-0 shutout victory in the second contest. The same two teams will meet tomorrow as they cose out the three game series.
The battle of the HPU's continues to be tough as the Howard Payne dropped both legs of Saturday's doubleheader to the Sharks of Div. II Hawai'i Pacific, 10-9 and 10-3, at Hans L'Orange Park..
Dallas 8, Sul Ross State 5
In Saturday's first contest, a single by Jacob Ochoa in the top of the first scored Joseph Sanchez and Chris York for a 2-0 Lobo lead.
The Crusaders brought a run across in their opening at-bat before a sacrifice fly by York in the top of the second scored Ryan Acebedo for a 3-1 lead for the visitors.
Dallas then plated five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-3 advantage.
In the Sul Ross sixth, Bo Justin Martinez scored off a sacrifice fly by Sanchez before Wesley Moss scored off a double steal to pull Sully to within a run.
The Crusaders reeled in a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth and snuffed a Lobo rally to claim the 8-5 victory.
Both teams tallied seven hits in the first contest.
Sul Ross ace Aaron Marquez shouldered the defeat after two innings from the hill. The Andrews senior yielded six runs off of five hits with three strikeouts.
Sul Ross State 16, Dallas 0
Sully posted a 12-hit payload in a second game slug fest while holding Dallas to just four hits.
Following a dormant opening inning, the Lobos unleashed a 10-run barrage in their second at-bat.
Moss came across in the top half of the third off a wild pitch extending the Lobo lead to 11. A sacrifice fly by Daniel Rojo then scored fellow freshman Tim Johnson before another wild pitch brought Ochoa across for a 13-0 lead.
A single through the right side by Martinez plated Tye Lindsey and Jared Lorenz to finish off the inning as the Lobos held a comfortable 15-0 lead.
Lindsey then scored the last run of the outing in the next inning as Martinez grounded into a double play.
The game was called in the sixth by virtue of the mercy rule.
Starter Sam Russell picked up the win after throwing four-and-one third innings. Russell gave up just three hits and recorded four strike outs in the shutout victory.
Hawaii Pacific 10, Howard Payne 9
Hawai'i Pacific jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the 1st inning, but Nolyn Box brought the Jackets within one with a two run homer to left in the top of the 2nd.
The Sharks answered with a two run jack of their own, along with an rbi single to go up 6-2 in the bottom half of the 2nd, but the fireworks were just getting started.
The 4th inning is where it began to get exciting. Jacob Salazar popped one over the left field fence to draw the Jackets within two, and then a Joshua Gerig walk brought the score to 6-5, still in favor of Hawai'i Pacific.
Later in the 4th, the Sharks bit back with another two run bomb of their own, then added an rbi double and a single to make it 10-5.
Howard Payne gave it one last, good push, though, as Salazar hit an rbi single in the 8th and RJ Roberts smashed a three run shot in the 9th. Unfortunately, though, the Jackets fell by a final of 10-9.
RJ Roberts finished the game 2-5 with a homerun and 3 rbis, and Jacob Salazar went 2-3 with a homerun and 3 rbis.
Preston Newman fell to 0-1 on the year after giving up 6 run, 5 earned, on 7 hits in 2 innings. Graham White also made an appearance, going 2.1 for the Jackets giving up 4 earned runs on 4 hits. Seth Brody, Kyle Prudes and Zach Moseley combined for the other 3.2 innings.
Hawaii Pacific 10, Howard Payne 3
In the first start of his college career, Bryson Lyro showed some good signs in his 3.2 innings, keeping the Jackets closely in the game. He ended up taking the first loss of his career, though, giving up 6 runs, all earned, on 8 hits with 3 strikeouts. A committee from the bullpen finished the game off.
Cade Varrichio, getting the start at short stop, led the Howard Payne hitters in this match up going 2-2 with a run scored, an rbi and a walk.
