Cabrini picked up their third consecutive victory this Thursday afternoon following a 6-1 win over the Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers. The Cavs received a strong start from sophomore Ray Lutick on the bump. The righty tossed six innings and allowed just four hits and one earned run, while striking out six, en route to his first victory of the season. Junior Ivan Varela, freshman Mike Gama and senior Tyler Ronayne combined for three hitless innings out of the pen, keeping the Rose-Hulman offense at bay. Freshman Garrett Laraia led the offense as the shortstop finished 1-2 with three RBI's and a pair of walks.
Through the aid of a seven-run eighth inning, Capital came back from four runs down to claim its first victory of the 2019 season. The Crusaders defeated the Cardinals of Saint Mary's (Minn.) on Thursday morning, 8-5. Junior Beau Otto started the Crusaders' comeback in the bottom of the eighth inning and later put the exclamation point on the end of it with a two-run base knock. Capital entered the inning down 5-1 before the Purple and White exploded for a seven-run frame behind six hits and two free passes.
A seven-run seventh inning gave No. 16 Chapman an 8-5 win over No. 5 Texas Lutheran. All seven runs were scored with two outs, turning a three-run deficit into a four-run advantage. With two outs and two one, sophomore Henry Zeisler sent a long fly ball to left center that drifted over the 2003 National Champions sign in left center field for a game-tying, three-run opposite field homer. The three-run shot tied the game at 4-4 and was just the beginning of a seven-run rally.
Bethany swept Penn St.-Beaver, 5-2 and 9-0, in a non-conference doubleheader at Bethany Park. The Bison start the season 4-0 for the first time since the 2010 season. In game one, Brandon Wagner led the offense going 3-for-3 with a run scored and RBI. Kyle Goodwin had three hits in game two with two runs and two RBIs.
Immaculata trailed by two through seven innings at Stevenson - the second of a five-game week for the Macs - and Ty Esenwein came through with a bases-clearing single to vault the Macs into the lead, and eventually a road victory, 8-4. Freshman Chris Huyette threw two and two-thirds innings of one-hit ball in relief to pick up his first collegiate victory on the mound after working for the second consecutive day.
Framingham State tallied five runs in the third inning and two in the seventh to secure a 7-5 victory over Emerson in non-conference action this afternoon at St. John's. Senior Kyle Lippert finished the game three-for-four at the plate with a run scored and a walk, while Williams walked three times and drove in a pair. Senior Kyle Hodgson earned the victory in the game striking out two and allowing no runs in a game that saw the Rams use five pitchers.
A day after nearly sweeping a doubleheader, Johnson & Wales got it done Thursday. On day two of their spring break trip, the Wildcats took game one from Manchester, 7-1, then downed the Spartans, 8-1, in the nightcap. Senior Josh Mousseau had one of the best outings of his career, giving up just one run on two hits with eight strikeouts in eight innings of work in game one. In game two winning pitcher James Smiegocki also benefited with some run support. He only surrendered one run – a solo home run in the fourth – over 6.2 innings with three strikeouts.
Neumann defeated Milwaukee School of Engineering 12-7. The Knights tallied 17 hits in the game, led by John Lindeborn and Zach Ray with three each. Ray also knocked in three runs while Danny Padilla knocked in two. Phil Sanborn started the game for the Knights and went the first two innings. He allowed three runs on five hits and struck out three. Brennan Hatala went the next 2.2 innings and allowed four runs on five hits. Lindeborn picked up the win, going the final 4.1 innings, and allowing just one hit. MSOE defeated Hanover ealier 1-0 in eleven innings.
Texas-Tyler and Newbury played opponents from another classification and both suffered losses on Thursday. Texas-Tyler (5-3) dropped their first of a five-game schedule in Florida, 11-3, to NCAA D-II opponent Davenport (6-1). In the ninth inning, NAIA Fisher junior Mitchell Lundholm provided the game-tying RBIs, followed by senior Ismael Perez and his game-leading RBI single, all of which was apart of a nine-run final inning as Fisher came back to defeat the Newbury Nighthawks 12-5 at the New England Baseball Complex.
