Led by sophomore's Corey Hunt and Ray Lutick, the Cabrini pitching staff collected the program's first no hitter in this afternoon's 5-0 victory over the visiting Dickinson College Red Devils.
Hunt earned the victory after he tossed 5.1 innings and struck out three. The sophomore ran into trouble in the top of the sixth as he issued three walks to the first four batters he faced to load the bases with one out.
Lutick came on in relief and navigated the Dickinson lineup masterfully, as he struck out the Red Devils' No. 3 and 4 batters in Joey Volpe and Alex Cohen, respectively. Volpe and Cohen have combined for 38 hits, eight doubles, and 25 RBI's entering today's game.
Lutick's clutch sixth inning kept Hunt in line for the win, while also setting the reliever up for the rare 3+ inning save. In total, Lutick would throw 3.2 innings and tie his career high with six strikeouts. Today's victory also marked the first save of the season for the righty.
The Cavalier offense came through with a pair of key hits, highlighted by a single from junior Joe Aurite and a double from sophomore Justin Henry.
Following a one out walk from freshman Brandon Loner and a single from Henry, Aurite stepped to the plate with an opportunity to hand the Cavs the early lead. The second baseman did just that as he roped a single to center to push across Loner and Henry and put the Blue and White up 2-0 in the bottom of the second.
The Cavs would go on to load the bases later in the inning, but Dickinson starter Ben Rappaport induced a fly out from sophomore JD Barrett to end the inning.
Henry would give his pitchers some breathing room in the seventh as the powerful right handed batter unloaded the bases with a double off the left field wall to put the Cavs up 5-0. A leadoff walk from freshman Garrett Laraia, followed by a walk from Barrett put early pressure on Dickinson releiver Jake Geddes.
Sophomore Mack McKisson laid down a perfect bunt to move both runners into scoring position and beat out the throw to load the bases. As mentioned, Henry delivered the big blow with a double off the base of the left field wall to push the lead to 5-0.
That would be more than enough for Lutick as the righty retired the final six batters in order, highlighted by a pair of strikeouts in the ninth, to secure the no no and the victory for the Blue and White.
Henry and Aurite each finished 2-3 with 3 RBI's and 2 RBI's, respectively. McKisson was the only other Cavalier to mark the hit column after finishing 1-4 with a run scored.
Dickinson pitchers Ben Rappaport, Joey Geddes and Connor Langan stymied the Cavalier offense for much of the afternoon as they combined to strike out an impressive 17 batters, while allowing just five hits.
Following today's game, the Diamond Cavs improve to 12-4 overall and run their win streak to four games. They will look for their fifth and sixth consecutive victory tomorrow, March 23rd, when they travel to Dover, DE to take on the Wesley College Wolverines. First pitch of the double header is slated for noon.
