SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore College head baseball coach Matt Midkiff picked up win No. 200 in his career on Tuesday during his 11th season as a collegiate head coach.
Midkiff spent four years at Eastern University before coming to Swarthmore. He led the Eagles to a pair of 20-win seasons and won MAC-Freedom Coach of the Year in 2010 after the team won a school-record 21 games, which was an 18-win improvement from the previous year. The Garnet have been over .500 in five of Midkiff's first six full seasons, and the team shattered a program record by winning 38 times in 2018. He won Centennial Conference Coach of the Year and All-Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year by D3Baseball.com.
Swarthmore beat DeSales 13-5 on Tuesday at Clothier Field. The Garnet are 12-3 this season after having won 11 of their last 12 games.
The Garnet kept things interesting until plating three, two and five in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, respectively.
Senior designated hitter Jackson Roberts became the eighth Swarthmore player to hit a home run this season by blasting one way beyond the left field fence in the seventh. Roberts set Swarthmore's single-season record with 10 homers last season. Roberts also tripled in the win, and he scored on that same play after a throw by the shortstop sailed over the third baseman's head into the Garnet dugout. His final line at the plate was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a walk.
Junior Ryan Warm pitched 6.2 innings and earned his team-leading third win of the season. He had five strikeouts, one walk and three earned runs. Junior Owen Webb garnered his team-best third save this year by pitching 2.1 innings of one-run baseball.
Juniors Jared Gillen and Cole Beeker were the other Garnet hitters with two hits on the day. Gillen had three RBIs, and Beeker scored three times. Beeker has consistently accumulated a team-high .573 on-base percentage to accompany a .446 batting average.
Sophomore Michael Sepe had one of the more bizarre great performances on offense against the Bulldogs. He was hit by a pitch three times, stole two bases, had one hit, one RBI and two runs scored.
Swarthmore welcomes Cabrini to Clothier Field on Wednesday for one game set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
