Junior Matthew Spagnolo had a home run, double and four RBIs, and classmate Andrew Kasiski had four hits and two RBIs, to lead Hampden-Sydney to a 9-5 upset road win at nationally-ranked No. 3 Christopher Newport on Thursday in Newport News. Senior Trey Celata gained the pitching victory in middle relief for the visiting Tigers (5-4-1) against the previously unbeaten and host Captains (9-1). H-SC scored nine runs on 10 hits, setting the tone at the start with three runs in the first inning, adding one run in the second, two runs in the fourth and three more runs in the ninth for the victory. The Tigers led 6-0 after four at-bats, allowed five runs by CNU in the fourth, though still leading 6-5, before scoring the three insurance runs in the ninth for the final four-run margin and the big road upset over the Captains, ranked third in this week's D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25.
Hiram used a seven-run second-inning to get into the win column, upending Rivier 9-4 in the final day of their spring trip to Fort Myers, Fla. The Terrier offense broke through in the second inning, sending 11 men to the plate to blow the game open, 7-0. Freshman Phillip Moore finished off the game pitching the final 1.1 innings of work while striking out a pair to help preserve the victory. He was one of four pitchers on the day that worked effectively in the contest.Sophomore Justin Humphrey began the game, pitching three full innings while allowing just two hits and striking out five. Jeff Spencer then came in relief, striking out two in two innings before Shawn May threw 2.2, fanning four. May then gave way to Moore who finished out the game.
Fontbonne continued its hot-hitting ways as they came away with a 15-8 victory over Trine. John Hughes improved to 2-0 on the year after allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out a season-high seven in 6.0 innings of work. Jonathon Hoevelmann had a day at the top of the order going 4-for-6 with three runs scored, three stolen bases and an RBI.
A challenging stretch of games continued for Otterbein mid-week during its annual spring break trip, which transitioned from the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte to the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. After a loss to Saint John's (Minn.) on Wednesday, Otterbein responded nicely to pick up a strong win against NCAA regional team Alvernia (Pa.) on Thursday, getting a dynamite pitching effort from the upperclassmen duo of Johnny Putnam and Collin Hoffman.
Louisiana College returned to their home diamond to take on Dakota State, the first home game for the Cats had since mid-February. After struggling offensively most of the night the wings of the LC rally bird surged late to take the 8-6 win over the visiting Trojans. The bottom of the eighth inning saw the Wildcats with one of their biggest offensive surges they've had all season, scoring eight runs, all with 2-outs, to answer the call of the rally bird.
Coe moved their unbeaten streak to seven to start the season with their third extra-winning win and fourth one-run victory of their Florida excursion with a 4-3, 11-inning, win Thursday morning over Mitchell. Both pitching staffs showed their dominance at times on Thursday. Three Coe pitchers combined to strikeout 15 Mitchell batters while two Mariner pitchers teamed to strikeout 14 Kohawk batters. Starting on the mound for Coe was Jack Greene. In six innings of work, the southpaw fanned eight while alllowing six hits and giving up three runs, two earned. TJ Deardorff came on to pitch 3.1 innings of scoreless relief and struck out five. TJ Johnson did not allow a base runner in the final 1.2 innings to pick up the win.

St. John Fisher got seven strong innings out of sophomore pitcher RJ Kuruts as the Cardinals defeated No. 7 UMass Boston, 8-6, he Lake Myrtle Sports Complex. With the win, Fisher, which is receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com national poll, improved to 5-2 while the Beacons fell to 0-1 to begin their season. Kuruts allowed just two runs on four hits as the righty came away with eight strikeouts. Dillan Wilkinson was tagged with four runs (three earned) in a third of an inning while Jack Delaney threw 1.2 scoreless innings. Jared Wren (1-0) got the win on the mound after allowing just one hit over two innings to go along with three Ks.
In Lebanon Valley's opening game against Kenyon, the Flying Dutchmen earned their seventh consecutive victory in a 7-3 win over the Lords. In game two of days twinbill, the Dutchmen's seven-game win streak was haulted by the Lords thanks to a big inning by Kenyon. LVC now sits at 7-1 overall, while the Lords jumped to 4-2.
No. 17 Salisbury defeated Neumann at Sea Gull Baseball Stadium, 7-2. Andrew Rosso replaced starter Zach Amisano in the seventh inning and closed out the contest by allowing only one hit across the final three frames to earn the save. Amisano recorded his second straight win, pitching six innings while striking out three batters and allowing two runs on four hits.
Alex Sir Louis dazzled and the offense sizzled as the Heidelberg University baseball team won its fourth straight, picking up a 5-2 win over No. 21 Misericordia. Sir Louis held the Cougars to two runs over eight innings while the offense scored four runs with two outs. Kyle Jenkins, Marc Ochoa, Jake Davis and Zach Doran each had two hits apiece as the Student Princes (5-2) tallied 12 hits on the day.
York ran away late from Eastern 15-7 in their Myrtle Beach finale on Thursday. The Spartans finished 3-1 for the trip and return to York on a three-game winning streak. The Spartans are now 5-1 all-time against Eastern and have won the last two meetings with the last matchup coming on March 4, 2014. The York offense set a school record drawing 15 walks in the contest. The York pitching staff also issued a season-high seven free passes on the day. Freshman Josh Mann came out of the bullpen in his collegiate debut and picked up his first career win after tossing four innings for the Spartans.
Mount Union cranked out a combined 25 hits in 7-4 and 12-4 wins over Widener in the season opening series at Osceola Heritage Park. Senior centerfielder Billy Goodall had two hits as seven different Purple Raiders registered a hit in a 7-4 game one win. Senior Phil Mary scattered four runs on eight hits over 5.1 innings to get the win while sophomore Eric Ostrowski did not allow hit over the final 1.2 innings to pick up the save. In game two, the Raiders put six runs on the board in the first with a big two-run single from senior Bryant Kennedy and another run in the second to take a commanding 7-0 lead as they rolled to the win.
Saint Joseph's (Maine) (5-0) toppled Saint Vincent (4-1), 12-5, in RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. Saint Joseph's scored at least one run in every inning except the third and registered a season-high 17 hits in the triumph. The teams combined to make nine errors on the afternoon, as the Golden Bears committed five and the Monks four…St. Joe's stranded 12 runners on base, Saint Vincent left 10 on the pond.
