A busy day on the diamonds on Saturday

then blanked the Bison, 8-0, in the second game.

Less than 14 hours after returning to campus from its spring break trip to Florida, Southern Vermont went back on the road for a three-game weekend series at Wells  the Mountaineers slugged the ball to win the opener 19-7 Saturday afternoon at Wells Turf Field. After scoring twice in the top of the first, SVC nearly batted around twice in the second as the Mountaineers rallied for 11 runs. The game was never in doubt after that as the teams traded scores for Southern Vermont to maintain its strong upper hand and close out the win. SVC (4-6-1) reached double digits in the runs column for the fourth time in its last six games with the two outliers seeing the Mountaineers score at least seven times.

After a frustrating and somewhat uncharacteristic three-game losing skid, Otterbein promptly responded in a strong way by sweeping Mount Union in the OAC opener for both schools. The Cardinals, looking to defend their 2018 regular-season title, started this year's league slate with victories by scores of 6-2 and 13-7 in front of a nice crowd at Fishbaugh Field. Tim Snyder hit 3 for 3 in the game while Collin Hoffmann grabbed his first win by retiring five-straight hitters. Johnny Putnam took the no-decision despite a valiant effort, allowing just two runs over 7.1 innings of work.In game two the Cardinal lineup posted 17 hits as a team. Sophomore Andy Caddas secured his second win of the season after another long-relief effort, allowing just two hits across four middle innings after entering in the third. Senior Jaryd Murphy then garnered a save as a result of tossing the final three frames to culminate.

Alvernia (12-5, 5-0) gave up eight runs in the first inning of the day and came back to sweep a doubleheader over Lebanon Valley (9-6, 2-2) in MAC Commonwealth at Angelica Park. The Dutchmen sent 12 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning of game one and held an 8-0 lead before the Golden Wolves had a chance with the bats. Alvernia bounced back with three runs in the bottom of the first and put up crooked numbers in five of six innings for a 17-12 win. Alvernia had three two-run innings in game two in support of Nick Marotta for a 6-4 win.

Jake Ossell homered in the sixth inning and had two hits, four RBI and two runs in the game as St. Olaf defeated Minnesota Morris, 13-1, in a non-conference contest. St. Olaf (7-2) recorded 10 hits and held Minnesota Morris (2-5) to just four hits, along with five errors by the Cougars and an errorless game by the Oles in the victory. Ossell led St. Olaf with two hits,including a home run, four RBI and two runs, while Tommy McDonald added two hits and two runs and Matthew Muller had two hits and an RBI. Sam Pressman collected two RBI off one hit and tallied two runs, along with two RBI and a hit from Dylan Blake. Jesse Retzlaff pitched four scoreless innings and picked up his second victory of the season, while Luke Feigal finished out the final 2.1 innings of the game.

Sewanee earned a split of its doubleheader with Centre to start a three-game series. The Tigers fell to the Colonels 14-4 in game one before rallying to win the nightcap, 3-2, from Oary Wright Field. Sewanee's Riley Brandvold notched a hit in each game to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Will Kirk led the Colonels with three hits on the day, two coming in game one.

Franklin busted out the lumber on day one of their spring break trip, rolling to a 14-6 win over Elmhurst to open a seven-game Florida road swing. Franklin (8-3) smacked a season-high 17 hits off Blue Jay (3-4) pitching to win their fourth game in a row. Ryan Bixler, Alex Mis and Drew Naumovich all left the yard for Franklin on Saturday (Mar. 23), while five different players recorded multiple hits.

For the second time this season Plymouth State rocked five home runs in a game to match a program record as the Panthers split a non-conference doubleheader with WPI at the New England Baseball Complex. The Panthers took the opener, 14-9, rallying from a 6-0 deficit behind the five home runs, including three in a six-run sixth inning. WPI answered with a 19-10 win in game two to earn the split. After not hitting five home runs in a game since the 1990 season, the Panthers have now accomplished the feat twice in the last ten games. With the split Plymouth State moves to 6-5 on the year, while WPI goes to 13-4.

Opening the home portion of the schedule a day early due to poor field conditions at Wisconsin Lutheran , North Central split the non-conference doubleheader, earning a 4-2 win in the opener before the Warriors completed a late comeback in game two with a walk-off in the bottom of the ninth. Charlie Klemm was magnificent yet again for North Central on the mound, improving to 2-0 with the win, allowing just one earned run over his seven innings of work, striking out eight while walking a pair. Brannigan Hart paced the Warrior offense in the nightcap, going 3-for-4 from the plate with two runs scored and a RBI.

The Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde show known as Carthage baseball (8-5), opened at home with a split of a doubleheader with Defiance (9-4-1) at Augie Schmidt Field.  Defiance won the opening game, 13-10, but Carthage took the nightcap, 14-1 in seven innings. "I've been doing this a long time," said Carthage coach Augie Schmidt IV, "but I don't have an answer for knowing what we're going to get in any particular game, or even a particular inning.  This season has been an adventure for us, so far.  Today, in the first game, we invented new ways to give up runs—it was a tad embarrassing."

Oberlin opened its annual spring break trip to Tucson, Arizona with a sweep of Concordia (Wisc.), winning game one 20-6 before walking-off with a 5-4 win in the nightcap. As a team the Yeomen pounded out 29 hits, headlined by Brendan Mapes (6) and Ben Reed (5) who combined for 11 hits in the sweep. In game one the Yeomen led 4-2 after two innings as the four-run second featured a two-RBI single down the left field line by Reed and run-producing plate appearances by Nick Nelson and Mapes. The Yeomen would break the game open with five runs in the fourth before pouring on nine runs in the fifth to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome of game one. Game two was much more closely contested as the Yeomen finally prevailed in their last at-bat.

Cabrini scored a total of 43 runs in a convincing doubleheader sweep of the Wesley Wolverines, 22-4 and 21-9. The Blue and White pushed across 22 runs in game one and nearly matched their output in game two as they scored 21 runs to cruise to a pair of comfortable victories. The Cavaliers needed just 13 hits to tally a season high 22 runs in their game one victory over the Wolverines. The offense was aided, however, by nine Wesley errors and 10 walks. Sophomore Mack McKisson paced the offense after he finished 3-4 with four runs and three RBI's, including his first home run of the season. Classmate JD Barrett tallied two hits, while also scoring four runs and driving home three. The offense followed their game one performance with an equally as dominant performance in the night cap as they totaled a season best 22 hits, resulting in 21 runs.

Washington University posted a pair of wins over Illinois Wesleyan at Kelly Field taking game one 6-0 before edging the Titans 2-1 on a walk-off sacrifice fly in the ninth inning. WashU improved to 11-3-1 on the year with the wins while IWU fell to 7-6 on the season. The Bears pitching staff combined to allow one run on 18 innings pitched and 13 hits surrendered. WashU also struck out 18 batters in the doubleheader.

After struggling in its series against Lewis & Clark College last weekend, the Pacific Lutheran University baseball team came back with a vengeance against Northwest Conference rival Linfield College on Saturday, earning a doubleheader sweep with a 5-4 extra innings win in the opener before taking the nightcap 10-7. In game one Linfield (4-16, 2-12 NWC) gained runs back in the bottom of the 6th and 8th innings, forcing the game into extra innings. The Lutes got hits in both the 10th and 11th innings, but not enough to score. It wasn't until the top of the 12th inning that the Lutes were able to capitalize when Connor Lemma double through to left center drove in the eventual winning run.

Junior lefthander Brian Reiss tossed a four-hit shutout as Montclair State split its doubleheader with Oneonta at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Red Hawks (6-6) blanked the Red Dragons 8-0 in the opener before falling 4-1 in the nightcap. Reiss (1-1) tossed his second career shutout as he struck out six and walked two in his 117-pitch effort. Freshman Daniel Clemente went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI while Andrew Ollwerther had two hits. Oneonta scored three seventh inning runs on game two that provide the margin in the 4-1 win.

Wilmington opened OAC play by sweeping Muskingum, winning game one 3-2 and game two 9-7 at Tewksbury-Delaney Field. In the game win victory, Lance Fleischman struck out 10 batters to earn a complete-game victory. In game two Gage Bley finished game two 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI while Jake Hyatt added a 3-for-4 performance with and RBI and two runs scored.

Case Western Reserve returned home to Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, Ohio for the first time in three weeks, picking up a sweep of a doubleheader against SUNY Fredonia with a 19-0 win in the opening game, followed by a 5-3 come-from-behind victory in the second game of the day. The Spartans have now won four-straight games and six-of-seven overall to improve to 10-6 on the season.  CWRU also remained perfect at Nobby's Ballpark this season, raising its home record to 4-0.  Fredonia dropped to 9-7 overall with the pair of losses. Senior second baseman Rocco Maue drove in six runs over the two games, and sophomore outfielder/ catcher Jake Ryan collected six hits in 10 at bats, including three doubles, raising his batting average to .380 for the season, and increasing his team-leading RBI total to 21.  Sophomore shortstop Jacob Kucia picked up hits in each contest, running his hitting streak to nine games, the longest this season by a CWRU player.

Senior Donny Gherardi registered a walk-off two-run home run in the first game of the day before Stevens shutout Elmira in game two in an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Dobbelaar Field. Senior Danny Poidomani (1-1) earned his first win of the season in the Ducks 5-4 win in game one after pitching all seven innings and striking out seven batters. Classmate Ryan Larsen (1-3) collected his first win of the year in Stevens 17-0 shutout over the Soaring Eagles, while sophomore Joseph Deitz was credited with the save. The Ducks improved to 5-9 overall and start conference play with a 2-0 record.

Washington & Jefferson tallied a season-best 17 runs to defeat Thiel, 17-5, in the two teams' Presidents' Athletic Conference opener at Ross Memorial Park. The victory propels the Presidents to 6-7 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the Tomcats drop to 4-9. James Artale started the fireworks off early, slamming a two-run homer over the right field wall to put W&J up 2-0 in the top of the first. The home run is the first of Artale's senior season and the sixth of his career.

NVU-Lyndon defeated Maine-Presque Isle, 12-2, at Fraser Field. The game was part of the Roberto Clemente Cup tournament, hosted by Fisher College. In other opening day games, the hosts defeated SUNY Canton, 13-3, then Canton rebounded for a 6-3 victory over UMaine-Presque Isle. Jake Jourdain earned the win, yielding only one run on three hits over five innings while striking out ten and walking only two.

Albion got quality starts from pitchers Mitch Shedlowsky and Scott Grant to gain 10-0 and 2-1 victories over Olivet in its first MIAA doubleheader of the season. The victories lift Albion to 6-5 overall. Albion and Olivet are scheduled to complete the weekend series with a pair of games at Albion's Champions Stadium at Frank Joranko Field on Sunday. The first pitch has been moved up to noon in hopes to get the games played before rain interrupts play.

Pacific split a doubleheader with Whittier at Chuck Bafaro Stadium in Forest Grove. Pacific won game one by a 10-2 margin before Whittier came back to win the nightcap, 12-7. The doubleheader split puts the Boxers at 17-9 and the Poets at 10-9 on the 2019 season. Plus, Pacific is now 8-6 in non-conference action and 11-6 in games played at the friendly confines of Chuck Bafaro Stadium. Game one saw the Boxers score the final eight runs after Whittier tied the game at two in the top of the fifth. The Boxer offense came away with 12 hits for its 11th double-digit hit game and second-straight contest. Drew Fagerness, Brad Altomare and Chase Anderson each had two hits to spark the attack. Altomare also scored four runs and Fagerness and reserve R.J. Gordon each had two RBIs. Game two saw Whittier score seven runs in the top of the ninth to come back from a 6-5 deficit en route to a 12-7 win in the nightcap and secure the conference series. It was the first time that the Boxers had lost in 2019 after leading thru eight innings. In the inning, the Poets sent 10 batters to bat, scoring seven runs on seven hits.
