LaGrange battered No. 10 Huntingdon 14-11 and 17-3 in a USA South doubleheader Saturday at Posey Field. The Panthers (12-5, 6-2 USA South) handed the Hawks (14-2, 6-2 USA South) their first two losses of the season in taking the weekend series. The Panthers had 33 hits that included 17 extra base hits. LC tied a school NCAA era record with four home runs in a 5-4 loss Friday. The Panthers hit four more home runs Saturday. LC has 10 home runs on the season, all on the road.
Elmira had two opportunities to upset nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins, but the Blue Jays managed to win both ends of Saturday's non-conference doubleheader by scores of 3-2 and 7-3. The Soaring Eagles scored first in both games against the Blue Jays, who were ranked No. 20 in the latest edition of the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25. Although EC received strong pitching from both starters, the Johns Hopkins bullpen did not allow any runs and the JHU batters capitalized during critical situations in the late innings.
Catholic kicked off its spring break trip in a big way with a 4-3 win over No. 3 Christopher Newport at Captains Park in Newport News, Va. The Cardinals (3-3) used 11 base hits as seven batters in the starting nine reached base safely and senior Jon Mierzwa led the way on the mound to defeat the Captains (9-2). Junior Cid Porter went 2-4 on the day and his two-RBI single in the fourth inning proved to be the difference in the contest.
No. 15 Webster scored a season high nine runs and used a four run fifth inning to break open close game as the Gorloks picked up a 9-2 victory over Salve Regina in its second game of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Chain of Lakes Stadium. In Saturday's win, junior centerfielder Aron Hopp, who hit from the leadoff spot for the first time this season, scored three of Webster's season high nine runs and also stole a WU season high three bases. The three stolen bases are tied for 13th on the school's single game chart. Along with Hopp's three runs, sophomore third baseman Ben Swords scored two runs.
St. John Fisher wrapped up its time in Florida with a 10-8 win over No. 7 UMass Boston at Osceola Heritage Park in the final game of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. With the win, Fisher, which has won five of its last six games, improved to 6-3 on the season and won two games against the Beacons in its three-game series. In all, Fisher banged 14 hits with Allen Murphy going 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored.
Facing a ranked opponent for the third consecutive day, Heidelberg won again, upending No. 5 Swarthmore, 10-3. Trevor Adkins rebounded from two shaky starts, throwing eight innings. The Student Princes -- winners of six straight -- went 7-1 on the trip and stand at 7-2 overall. Swarthmore fell to 0-1. The strong start by Adkins was bolstered by yet another persistent Heidelberg offense. Seven Heidelberg starters had multi-hit days, including a three-hit effort from Kyle Jenkins. Jenkins and Marc Ochoa each drove in three runs.
Trinity's (Texas) fourth-ranked baseball team hammered out a 10-4 win over the Rochester. James Nittoli (4-0) remained undefeated after allowing four runs on seven hits over 6.2 innings of action, striking out seven batters and issuing just one walk. Dalys Binder picked up three of Trinity's 13 hits in the game, going 3-4 with two RBI and one run scored.
Southern Maine opened its 2019 season splitting a pair of games at the Bantam Baseball Bonanza held at Trinity (Conn..). The Huskies scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat M.I.T. 3-2 in their first game of day. In the nightcap, host Trinity built an early 5-0 lead, then hung on to down USM 5-4. In the opening game of the event, M.I.T. scored in the bottom of the 10th inning to take an 8-7 win over Nichols. The tournament concludes Monday when M.I.T. takes on Trinity.
Trailing 4-0 after the top half of the first inning, Concordia-Texas plated 11 runs in their last six at bats to win 11-6 to complete the sweep of Texas-Tyler on Saturday at Tornado Field. Casen Novak was stellar at the plate, going 4-for-5 on the day, to help CTX push their winning streak to nine games and start the season with a program-best 14-1 record.
Baldwin Wallace completed the 3-2, comeback against Kean in the final game of the Snowbird Classic at the South County Regional Park. BW (4-5) plated three huge runs in the seventh off four hits and totaled seven hits overall. The Yellow Jackets were led by senior first baseman Philip Wells as he got two hits, including a double and a run. Senior two-time Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference outfielder Reese Albright and sophomore infielder Luke Razzante each recorded a hit and an RBI, each coming in the seventh. Sophomore infielder Alex Ludwick also knocked in a run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly to right.
The nationally 16th-ranked Cortland Red Dragons improved to 5-4-1 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of Rutgers-Newark at Maine-Endwell High School. The Red Dragons won the opener, 7-4, and the nightcap, 7-2, in a pair of nine-inning contests. The games were originally scheduled to be played in New Jersey but were moved due to field conditions.
