Hendrix sets win mark on Sunday

Dan Schweitzer homered and drove in four runs and Scott Giordano reached base four times and finished with two RBI and three runs scored as Cortland defeated Fredonia, 17-4, for its 11th straight win. Schweitzer finished 2-for-4 with a homer, double and four RBI and Colin BeVard went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs. Giordano had a triple and three walks in his five plate appearances and Mike O'Connor finished 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBI.

Wilson hosted the Crusaders of Christendom College this afternoon in a nonconference doubleheader. The Phoenix (12-5, 2-0 CSAC) took down the Crusaders (9-10, 4-0 USCAA) in both games with scores of 8-4 and 14-4. Junior Joshua Harvey would earn his first win of the season as he went on to pitch 2.2 innings giving up three hits and 2 runs, freshman Trystan Housman would earn the save. In the nightcap, Brenden Johnson would earn his first win of the season as he went on to pitch four innings, giving up three hits and one run.

St. Joseph's (L.I.) split a pair of Skyline Conference contests with SUNY Maritime at Gregg Alfano Field. The Golden Eagles earned a 3-1 win in game one before dropping game two 4-1. SJC starter Anthony Papa was able to pitch around a one-out double in the top of the ninth to secure his second win of the season. Papa allowed one run on six hits with nine strikeouts in a complete game effort. In game two, Travis Bruinsma shut down the St. Joseph's offense as the entire starting lineup for the Privateers picked up at least one hit with Travis Zurita, Matt Eng and Eric Wenig added two hits.

Thomas More defeated the University of Dallas, 9-4, in a the series finale at Thomas More Field in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.  The Saints improve to 10-12 and the Crusaders fall to 15-14. First-year pitcher Mitch Mierke earned the win as he pitched five innings giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits, while striking out two. Joshua Boeckmann was three-for-four with a home run, three RBI and one run scored.

Five players recorded a double across two games as Stevens split an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader against Utica. Three multi-run innings by the Pioneers allowed them to win the first game 7-5. Jonathan Hardy (1-4) struck out three batters in 4.1 innings to earn his first win on the mound.  Stevens  senior Ryan Larsen (3-3) earned the win of game two after 6.0 innings pitched. AJ Farina dropped to 0-2 on the mound despite recorded four strikeouts in 3.0 innings.

Visiting Clarkson carried over a strong pitching performance from Saturday night into Sunday, posting a doubleheader sweep over Rochester in Liberty League action at Towers Field. Clarkson took game one 2-0, and then earned the sweep with a 10-2 win in the nightcap. The Golden Knights improve to 11-7 and 7-1 in the Liberty League, while Rochester evens up its record on the season, moving to 12-12 overall and 6-6 in the conference.

Manhattanville posted a dominating 33-8 win over the Wilkes Colonels in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom play. Manhattanville (12-10, 8-3 MACF) brought the artillery to Artillery Park, scoring in eight different innings, including six innings with three runs or more, setting team records for runs and hits (32). Every Manhattanville starter had at least one run and, by the top of the fourth inning, at least one hit each. In all, 16 different players recorded at least one hit and one run, while 13 players drove in at least one run each.

Case Western Reserve swept a doubleheader against New York University for the second-straight day, winning 3-1 in 11 innings in the early game and 5-3 in the second contest on Sunday, completing a four-game sweep of the Violets in a UAA series at MCU Park in Brooklyn, New York. The Spartans have now won five-straight games, and improved to 17-8 overall, including a 4-2 mark in the UAA this season.  NYU, which entered the weekend with just three losses total, dropped to 13-7 overall and to 0-4 in conference play. The sweep marked the first the Spartans have recorded against NYU in the three years of site play in the UAA, after winning three-of-four games each of the last two seasons.  It marked the third time in the last three years that CWRU has swept a four-game UAA series, after taking all four against Brandeis in both 2017 and 2018.

Rolling to their first CCIW series of the season, North Central put up double-digit runs for the second straight game against North Park in a 11-3 win at the Holmgren Complex. For the second straight game, eight of the nine batters in the Cardinal lineup recorded a hit, as Rob Marinec led the way finishing 2-for-3 with two hit by pitches, a walk, a run scored, two stolen bases and four RBI.

Middlebury scored seven of its 15 runs in the fifth inning, on its way to a 15-6 win over Plymouth State (9-11) in the team's home opener on Forbes Field. Middelbury blew the game open in the fifth with seven runs on five hits for a 13-1 lead. Phil Bernstein finished the day with three doubles (3-4) and three RBI, while Brooks Carroll was 2-4 with a double, two runs scored and two driven in. 

Life support and maybe a little better than that.  That's where the Carthage College (12-10, 4-5) stands in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin standings after winning the rubber game of a three-game set with Millikin (10-11, 5-4) at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis.  The two teams split a Saturday, April 6 doubleheader, also at Augie Schmidt Field, with Carthage winning the opening game, 4-1, before dropping the nightcap by a 9-1 margin.

Sophomore Ryan Yerby threw a complete game shutout to lead RPI to a 2-0 victory over Vassar College in Game 1 of a Liberty League doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Robison Field. The Engineers, who dropped Game 2 by a 5-4 score, are now 11-11 overall (7-5 Liberty League), while the Brewers move to 11-13 (5-7 Liberty League). Yerby (3-1) allowed seven hits and a walk over 7.0 innings for the complete game victory. He struck out four and finshed with 99 pitches thrown. Matt McGannon (2-2) took the loss in the opener, surrendering two runs on three hits in 4.0 innings. He struck out three and walked three.

After splitting the day Saturday against the Sewanee Tigers, Hendrix tied a season-best 16 hits in the rubber match game as the Warriors won its fifth straight SAA series of the season after the 9-3 victory. The Warriors carved up runs in the first and second innings before striking for two in the third. A four-run seventh inning extended the lead to six as Hendrix won its 11th conference victory of the season. The Warriors improve to 24-9 overall with an 11-4 mark in SAA play while Sewanee drops to 18-14 on the year with a 5-10 mark in conference games. The 24th victory of the season surpasses the old program record for most wins in a single season (23). Hendrix is currently tied with Berry in the 2019 SAA standings but own the tiebreaker over the Vikings. With six SAA games left, the Warriors are one game in front of third-place Birmingham-Southern.

Bates split a doubleheader with Trinity (Conn.), winning game one 7-6 in extra innings before dropping game two 7-3, taking two of three from Trinity overall and marking the fourth time in the last six years the Bobcats have won the season series against the Bantams. In the bottom of the ninth, Antonio Jareno doubled to right-center off Alex Herbst (1-1) to start the frame. The Bantams intentionally walked Jack Arend and brought in Justin Olson out of the bullpen. Jareno and Arend pulled off a double steal and Justin White lifted a fly ball to center, driving in Jareno and setting off a wild celebration in the infield. Before winning in extra innings, Bates rallied from a 5-2 deficit to take a 6-5 lead.

The Bearcats won both ends of an important home conference doubleheader against the defending champions the College of Staten Island at Westchester Community College in Valhalla, New York. In the first game, Paul Sirakowski was dominant on the mound with a complete game 2-0 shutout with four strikeouts. In the second game, the Bearcats had to rally back twice from deficits to pull out a 6-5 win.

Penn State Altoona wrapped up its weekend New York road trip, when it swept Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Hilbert in a doubleheader at Niagara University's John P. Bobo Field. The Lions (15-9, 6-2 AMCC) won game one 13-4, then grabbed game two by a final score of 15-5. It helped the team to a 3-1 record over the weekend, during which the squad split with Alfred State College on Saturday before Sunday's sweep of the Hawks (3-17, 1-7 AMCC). "Two good wins today. Nice to see the bats starting to come around a bit," said Penn State Altoona head coach RJ Barnard. "Catcher [Cumming] had a huge game for us, and a big weekend overall. We were low on arms, and Zane [Leister] did a great job of keeping his pitch count down and going all nine. Overall, it was a good New York trip."

Ben Marsico tossed 5.0 scoreless innings of relief to guide Washington & Jefferson to an 8-3 victory over Westminster (Pa.) in Presidents' Athletic Conference play. The victory by W&J secures a three-game series sweep of Westminster, while also extending the Presidents' current winning streak to 14 games overall. W&J stays perfect in conference play, moving to 12-0 in the league and 17-7 overall. At the halfway point of conference play, W&J has outscored its opponents by a 132-40 margin as they have rolled to a 12-0 start.

Mount Saint Mary finished off the weekend with a sweep of Yeshiva on the road on Sunday afternoon. The Knights scored 26 runs over the two games of the doubleheader as the Mount won game one 17-0 in seven innings while winning the nightcap 11-4. In the opener, Justin Maldonado finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Robert Brust and Nick Rizzo each had two RBI. Ryan Lutinski, Steven Mirra and Devin Tait each finished with two hits while Lutinski had three RBI.

SUNY Oneonta captured the rubber match of their three-game series against Plattsburgh Sunday afternoon with a 4-3 victory at Damaschke Field. Ryan Fay earned the win after tossing three scoreless innings in relief while striking out two Cardinals. Steven Gerringer earned his third save of the season after getting the final four outs of the game. John Zinko went 3-for-4 on the day with an RBI while Mike Graves had a pair of hits and a run scored.
