Team slug their way to victory on Friday

Friday saw plenty of offense as Chapman's Hank Zeisler tied a D-III record with two grand slams in a game in a doubleheader sweep of East Texas Baptist, Covenant scored 16 in their home opener and Pfeiffer scored 28 in five innings in an exhibition game.

Covenant waited an extra week to open its season, but wasted no time in jumping on season-opening opponent Emory & Henry. Jackson Heuer tossed six scoreless innings and Brooks DuBose and Ken Alexander had four RBIs each to lead the Scots over the visiting Wasps, 16-2, on Lookout Mountain. The win was the 20th, in 21 meetings, all-time for Covenant (1-0) over Emory & Henry (0-3). Heuer, making his first career opening day start, was magnificent. The senior struck out a career-high eight, while allowing just four hits over six innings to notch the win.

Cal Lutheran exploded for 21 runs on 21 hits to rout Caltech in their home opener at George "Sparky" Anderson field. The incredible offensive display was highlighted by freshman Austin Carrillo who provided three doubles in his 3-for-3 day at the plate, notching two RBI and three runs scored. Ryan Probst also enjoyed a three-hit day, going 3-for-3 while batting in two and coming across to score three times. Ryne Yamashiro continued his hot streak with his 2-for-3 performance, racking up three RBI and three runs scored in his massively productive display at the plate. Earning his first start of the season was Zach Bullard who went 2-for-3 with an RBI in his season debut. Daniel Stauffer came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with two RBI. Alexander Rivas prolonged his scoreless-inning streak to 12 after tossing six scoreless frames with eight strikeouts and scattering two hits. The sophomore improved to 2-0 after another masterful outing.

Third-ranked Trinity (Texas) opened up the 2020 season with a 2-1 win over La Verne. Despite the low score, the game featured 17 total hits and 20 runners left on base between the two West Region teams. Tyler Pettit had a pair of hits in his Tiger debut, driving in the eventual game-winning run with a single in the fourth inning. MJ Metz also picked up a pair of hits for Trinity, while Michael Goodrich and Michael Herrera both reached base twice with a hit and a walk. Trinity wins its opening game for the 18th time in 22 seasons under Head Coach Tim Scannell.

An offensive boom and strong pitching gave the Linfield Wildcats the 11-3 victory over the Puget Sound Loggers at Roy Helser Field. Freshman Cameron Skinner  got the start on the  mound for Linfield and threw another strong four innings in his first year for Linfield. Skinner allowed five hits and one run in the start. He also struck out two and left the game with the lead. Ben Ranieri led the charge for Linfield with three hits and two RBIs. Tanner Jacques was the RBI guy with three to lead the team to go along with three hits. 

Rhodes opened the Rawlings Southern Classic as they took on the Greensboro Pride. The Lynx were clicking on all cylinders as their starting pitcher, Jacon Dubs had an impressive outing and their offense poured in 12 hits, which led to a 12-1 victory. Wood Kimbrough (3), Peter York (2), and Chris Penna (2) all recorded a multi hit game. They all tallied two RBIs in the contest as well. In other Rawlings Southern Classic action, Ferrum scored a run in the fifth inning then hung on for a 3-2 non-conference win over previously unbeaten Berry.

Every batter in the Pacific Lutheran lineup got a hit in the season opener and the Lutes knocked around Pacific University pitching all evening, defeating the Boxers by a 9-6 margin. PLU (1-0) drew first blood and never looked back.  A two-run second inning and a four-run fourth had the visitors feeling in good on their opening night of action.

Luke Bruno homered in the opener and drove in the game-winning run in the tenth inning of the nightcap to give Whitworth a pair of non-conference wins against Northwest Conference opponents at Ron Tonkin Stadium.  The Pirates defeated Whitman 7-4 in the first game and topped Willamette 3-2 in ten frames in the second contest. Whitworth (4-1) will complete the tournament on Saturday with a game against Lewis & Clark at Milwaukie (Ore.) High School.

Hank Zeisler had quite a day with two grand slams as No. 1 Chapman powered to a doubleheader sweep of East Texas Baptist 8-3 and 11-1. The last tme a player hit two grand slams in a single games was in 2018 when St. John's (Minn.) Joey Stock dir the feat on the Johh nies spring trip in Ft. Myers, Florida.

Oglethorpe picked up its first victory of the season at Anderson Field, besting the visiting Greenville Panthers 8-3 on the first day of the Rawlings Southern Classic. The Stormy Petrels tallied five runs in the second inning to take control of the game, then held on via outstanding pitching for the five-run victory.

Senior Shawn Nickles had three hits and two RBI, and the Yellow Jackets scored their first five runs with two away, as Randolph-Macon defeated the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford 7-3 to stay unbeten on the year. Nickles reached four times, going 3 for 4 with a walk, one run and two RBI.

Arcadia pulled off an impressive upset victory over Methodist, 4-3, on the road to open their 2020 campaign. The Knights pieced together a four-run seventh inning, while the bullpen tossed six scoreless frames of one-hit baseball. Mitch Blake was outstanding for the Knights, throwing three scoreless innings with six strikeouts and no hits allowed. Freshman Tyler Costaro also played an essential role for Arcadia, picking up the victory with one strikeout and one hit allowed in three innings of relief. Jeremy Sabathne started the game for the Knights, lasting three innings with three earned runs.

Zach Dinkins tossed five innings and earned the win on the mound as Guilford defeated Averett, 7-2, in the season opener for both teams. Dinkins (1-0) struck out seven Cougars and allowed two walks. He gave up two runs and scattered six AU hits. Averett outhit Guilford, 7-6 as the Quakers were economical in outscoring the Cougars.

Belhaven earned their first victory of the season by defeating Fontbonne by a final score of 7-3 in the Home Opener at Smith Wills Stadium.With the win, the Blazers improve to 1-2 overall on the early season. AJ Bratton went 1-for3 at the plate and had three RBI, while Nick Lucido and Reed Bolton had two hits in the contest. Trip Benson and Logan Walters were the other two Blazers to record a hit in the game. As a team, Belhaven had seven hits and three stolen bases.

During the Week:

Two games were played, both on Wednesay, admist a flurry of cacellations earlier in the week. NC Wesleyan stormed back in the 7th inning with 4 runs to steal a 4-3 win against Virginia Wesleyan in Rocky Mount. Caltech opened their 2020 regular season with the annual Orange Out game against cross-town foe Providence Christian College. The Beavers fell 8-1 to Providence Christian.
