Christopher Newport and Lynchburg both claimed comeback wins mid week as the Captains score three in the final inning to surprise Roanoke and the Hornets erases a seven run deficit. Covenant also trailed earlier in their game with Maryville on Wednesday but by the the third inning retook a lead they would not relinquish.

nchburg came back from a seven-run deficit to top Averett 11-9 on Wednesday afternoon in a game that saw sophomore Avery Neaves drive in seven of the Hornets' 11 runs. The Hornets (2-2) started off strong but the Hornets' lead did not last long as the Cougars (0-1) put up five runs in the second and then followed that with four more runs in the third to go ahead 9-2 as the game headed into the home half of the third inning. In the third, after Lynchburg's first three hitters reached base to start the inning, Jackson reached on an infield single and drove home junior Jackson Harding. Neaves stepped into the box with the bases loaded and hit a grand slam to get the Hornets within two. Following his grand slam in the third, Neaves came up to the plate with the bases loaded again in the fourth and promptly cleared them with a three-run triple, putting the Hornets ahead 10-9 and completing the comeback. Lynchburg's bullpen shut down the Averett offense after the fourth inning as four Hornet pitchers combined to allow only two hits for the remainder of the game. Grayson Thurman threw two perfect innings to close it out as the righty fanned each of the six Averett hitters he faced.
Covenant recorded three home runs and 11 RBIs in its 15-4 win over Maryville Wednesday afternoon. The victory makes it four in a row for the Scots and marks the sixth win in a row over Maryville. Though Maryville is a USA South opponent, the game was played as a non-conference event. The final three contests scheduled against Maryville this season will be regarded as conference games and will be counted in the USA South standings. The Scots recorded seven stolen bases and 12 hits on the contest. Brooks DuBose finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Hunter Christian went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Covenant has hit 11 home runs in eight games this season.
In its return to the diamond for the first time in nearly a year, Christopher Newport stunned Roanoke (1-2) with a three-run rally in the top of the 9th inning to come from behind and capture a season-opening victory on Thursday afternoon. The Captains (1-0) scored seven of their eight runs in the final three innings and escaped Haley Toyota Field at Salem Memorial Ballpark with a one-run victory, 8-7. In his first career game, freshman Jay Cassady played hero on both sides of the ball. His go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the 9th proved to be the difference and then, in the bottom of the inning, Cassady went to the mound and recorded the game-clinching save.
