Wartburg upsets Webster

Concordia-Texas bounced back with a 11-1 win over ETBU on sunday after losing both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday. Bret Leiferman batted .417 with five RBIs with 2 doubles in CTX's season opening series.

Wartburg bounced back from a opening season loss with a win over No 10 Webster. Westminster (Mo.) traveled to Kansas to match up with Buena Vista this weekend and finished off a three game sweep with a 10-9 win. No. 22 Adrian defeasted No. 16 Birmingham-Southern 10-6 to take the series this weekend in a six game southern swing trip.

Wartburg tallied its first victory of 2021, upsetting No. 10 Webster 5-3 Sunday afternoon to earn a series split against the Gorlocks. Starting pitcher Darren Kilpatrick nearly tossed a complete game, allowing two earned runs, while the Orange & Black offense helped seal the win with a three-run ninth inning. Ethan Hayes led off the top of the ninth in a 2-2 game with a ground-rule double to right field. Zachary Wesolowski pinch ran and came around to score on a Max Goodhue RBI single to give the Knights a 3-2 lead. William Armstrong followed with a two-run double to score Carter Stubitz and Goodhue for the eventual game-winning runs.

Willamette put up a ferocious rally to overcome an 8-3 deficit by scoring six runs in the team's final at bat in the ninth inning, as the Bearcats claimed a 9-8 win over Whitman in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday at John Lewis Field. Ethan Fischel provided a walk-off single to center field that scored Layton Wagner with the winning run. In the second game, which was scheduled for seven innings, Whitman edged the Bearcats, 3-2. Both teams are 2-2 on the season.

Henrdix split a doubleheader with Rhodes 1-13, 7-4
on Sunday. The Lynx won the opener with the
Warriors taking the nightcap.

Fifth-year senior Tristin Richardson rapped three hits and drove in five runs to spearhead Adrian's season-high 13-hit attack in a 10-6 victory over Birmingham-Southern in a battle of nationally ranked teams on Sunday, with the visiting Bulldogs winning the rubber game of their season-opening series. The Bulldogs even the all-time series at seven wins apiece, including a 7-6 record at Birmingham-Southern.

DePauw posted a pair of six-run innings in its nightcap against Wabash on the way to a 17-5 win and a doubleheader split at Grand Park. The Little Giants rallied for a 4-3 win in the opener which was the season's first game for both squads. Kyle Callahan had five of DePauw's 15 hits in the nightcap. EJ White collected the win in relief of Michael Vallone, while Derek Haslett suffered the loss for the Little Giants. In the opener, Dylan Schneid picked up the relief win for the Little Giants.

Millikin posted on 9-3 win over Marian to win both games of the season opening series in Decatur, Illinois. The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Marian's Michael Snow hit a solo homerun to put the Sabres up 1-0. The Big Blue answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth taking advantage of a walk, balk and two Marian errors. Kyle Kane had a run scoring bunt base hit on the safety squeeze with an errant throw allowing both of Millikin's runners to score. The Big Blue scored four runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth. Brent Beals had a sacrifice fly that allowed two runs to score after the left fielder dropped the ball while attempting to make the catch. Beals would add a run scoring double in the eighth inning. Beals and Garrett Fritz each had two hits and two RBI for Millikin. Kyle Kane went 1-3 with two RBI. Tanner Coleman was the winning pitcher for Millikin throwing five innings allowing four hits and one earned run with striking out three. Beals picked up the save throwing one and one-third innings allowing only one hit and striking out three.

Newcomers Reid Sturn and Chase Elliott aided the Linfield Wildcats' come from behind, 4-3 win over the Pacific Lutheran Lutes on Sunday afternoon at Roy Helser Field. The Wildcats scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Down to their final chance, the Wildcats pinch hit for Skinner in the middle of an at-bat with Daniel Kahn, who rewarded with a single. After the next two batters flied out, Tanner Earhart drew a walk to move the tying run on base. Freshman Sturn came up at the plate with two runners on base and Linfield down to its final out. He hit a double down the left field line that scored Kahn and moved Earhart 90 feet away from tying the game. Elliott, a junior transfer from Chemeteka Community College hit a bloop single that fell between three PLU fielders and was enough for Earhart and Sturn to round home plate and give Linfield its second consecutive win.

NC Wesleyan rolled to a weekend series sweep of ODAC foe Virginia Wesleyan by ousting then 9-5 in game one and 9-4 in game two. Recording multi-hit games in the opener  were Brad Pennington, Davie Morgan, Jackson Hobbs, and Zach Lyon while those four and sophomore CF Drifton Padgett all hit for extra bases as well. Freshman 3B Tyson Bass also stole two bases as he reached via walk twice. On the mound in game two, the Battling Bishops were led by senior starter Drew Tubb's five innings allowing 3 runs on 8 hits with 2 walks and six strikeouts. Reliever CJ DiBenedetto then came on to finish the final two innings and pick up the win allowing just one hit and one run. Wesleyan's 5th straight win improves them to 6-1 on the season while VWU falls to 0-3.

Texas Lutheran and Schreiner split a non-conference doubleheader Sunday at TLU's Katt-Isbel Field. Schreiner took the early game 7-3, and TLU bounced back for the late-game victory, 17-7. TLU won the non-conference series, two games to one. The Bulldogs won the first game of the three-game set 10-1 on Saturday night. In the late game Sunday, Bulldog designated hitter Tyler Post belted a pair of home runs. Post hit a two-run shot in the fourth with TLU trailing 3-0. He added a three-run homer in the Bulldogs' three-run sixth. TLU scored seven runs in the fifth inning to blow the game open. Cole Irby went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Joe Jimenez drove in three, and Tyler Cauley doubled twice and drove in a pair. TLU finished the late game with 15 hits, and the team did not commit an error. In the early game, a seven-inning game, Schreiner's Garrett Whitley pitched 6-2/3 innings. He scattered nine hits and allowed three earned runs. Josh Gilliam recorded the last out to notch the save.

Fontbonne offense exploded for a combined 23 runs in the sweep over Nebraska Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon. The Griffins won 12-11, 11-2. The Fontbonne offense batted .397 and owned a .544 slugging percentage and was led by Daniel Youngblood (.667 with four doubles, one triple, team-high 10 RBI, and slugging percentage of 1.333), Thomas Purschke (.750 and owned a team-high .778 on-base percentage), and Luke Meixner went 4-for-7 (.571) with a homer, five RBI, and 1.000 slugging percentage. Tyson Wilson and Derek Morganthaler each picked up their first collegiate wins.

inning success at the plate saw the AMCATS pull ahead
to a 13-6 victory for their first win of the season.

Mitchell opened the 2021 season with a doubleheader split against Fisher on Sunday afternoon, dropping the first game 12-11 before bouncing back to win 5-0 in the nightcap. The teams played a total of 14 innings on the day, although not as originally scheduled. The first game took nine innings to decide a winner while the second was called after five due to darkness. The Falcons came out on top in the opener, a back-and-forth affair that spanned 3:30 hours. Fisher scored the go-ahead run in the ninth on an error, and reliever Christian Dow set the Mariners down in order to nail down his second save of the year. Starter Jakari Pellegrini kept the Falcons off the scoreboard in the second game, allowing three hits over 5.0 scoreless innings while striking out five. Lelo Martinez went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Robbie DelaCruz drove in a pair of runs to lead Mitchell at the plate.

LaGrange blasted Maryville 13-0 on Sunday at Cleaveland Field in Williamson Stadium to complete a three-game sweep of the weekend series. The Panthers improved to 3-1, while the Scots dropped to 2-7. E.J. Churchich drove in four runs with a pair of two-run singles. Jack Layrisson had three RBIs, two coming on his second home in as many days. Joe Ruth was 2-for-2, with a double, scored two runs and had an RBI. Christian Dyer had had his first two collegiate hits and drove in a run. Dustin Doscher, Rhett Hebert, and Mason Sanford all had doubles. Hebert batted .667 (6-for-9) in the three games with three doubles and three runs scored. Four pitchers combined for the shutout, limiting the Scots to five hits, striking out 13 and walking three. Dalton Brooks (1-0) went the first four innings. Brooks allowed three hits, walked three, and struck out six. Ethan Fry worked three innings, giving up two hits and striking out five. Jack Richards and Cal Fuller retired the Scots in order the final two innings.

The fourth-ranked Trinity Tiger baseball team finished off a weekend series sweep with a 19-3 victory over Southwestern on Sunday. Despite the final score, it was actually Southwestern that jumped out in front early with a three-run first inning. The Tigers left the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning, but did manage to draw a bases-loaded walk with two outs to make it a 3-1 game. Trinity pounded out six hits in the third inning alone, stamping seven runs on the scoreboard to take the lead at 8-3. Nathan Braulick and Cristian Holloway both had two-RBI hits in the inning. Brian Schaub cleared the bases with a three-run double to close out the scoring. The Tigers took full control of the game with a nine-run fourth, giving the home team 16 of its 19 runs over the two innings. Tyler Pettit started things off with an infield single, then came up later in the inning to crush a grand slam over the wall in left field. Trinity had seven total hits in the inning and led 17-3. Cade Momsen picked up his first career hit with an RBI double in the seventh, which turned out to be the final hit and final run of the day for the Tigers.
