Long wait for Chapman ends with win

Chapman University earned a 6-4 victory in its home opener at Hart Park against NCAA Division II foe, Biola. The Panthers (1-0) returned to the field after over one year away due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Chapman sent five pitchers to the mound in a planned staff outing and combined to strike out 17 Biola batters. Sophomore Wyatt Thompson fanned five while working the seventh and eighth innings. A grand slam by junior Cooper Foard spearheaded a five-run bottom of the third that gave the Panthers a 5-1 lead. Junior Drew Littwin drove in the Panthers' first run with a scorching double down the left field line and went on to have a two-hit game.

The No. 16 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks extended its win streak to eight games Wednesday with back-to-back victories over UW-La Crosse in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium. The Warhawks (8-1 overall, 2-0 WIAC) claimed the opener by a 9-2 score before posting an 8-3 triumph in Game 2.

Senior Dylan Hapworth went 3 for 4, including two home runs, and drove in three runs as the seventh-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies used the long ball to defeat the visiting University of Maine at Farmington Beavers 12-1 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon at Ed Flaherty Field. The win was the third straight for the Huskies, and improved their overall mark to 8-1. The game was the season opener for the Beavers. Southern Maine hit four home runs in the game to build a 9-1 lead. Junior Sam Troiano began the long ball parade hitting a two-run shot to center field to highlight a three-run first inning for the Huskies. Rookie Cam Seymour lead off the third inning with a solo blast to right field. The round tripper was the fifth of the season for Seymour. Two batters later, Hapworth hit his first homer of the game, a solo shot, over the scoreboard in left field. Hapworth added a two-run homer, again over the scoreboard, in the sixth inning.

Earlham College posted a pair of runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to emerge victorious over Bluffton University, 4-1, on Wednesday evening at Sadler Stadium. Danny Dopp doubled home Brian Pincura with a two-out liner into center field in the seventh inning, and Dopp crossed when Austin Hatfield singled into left field. The Quakers extended their lead to 4-1 in the eighth, taking advantage of singles from Isaiah Shake and Christian Lancianese to open the frame. Buffton scored its lone run in the third inning, with an RBI double from Parker Reynolds put the Beavers on the scoreboard. Earlham reliever Jacob Renner picked up the win after coming on to pitch to Bluffton in the seventh, and he was the pitcher of record for the Quakers when they plated the go-ahead runs in the bottom half of the frame. Domanick Michael finished off the Beavers in the ninth inning for his fourth save of the season. Nathan Lancianese, Hatfield, and Gendreau each finished with two hits for the Quakers.

Senior Jason Shell recorded his 100th career hit as the Anna Maria College prevailed 12-5 over visiting Becker College on Wednesday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex in Northboro, Massachusetts. Shell entered the game with 97 career hits, and had his best game of the season, going four-for-five with an RBI and two runs scored. Shell hit the 100 hit plateau in the bottom of the fourth when he singled to right field to load the bases for the AMCATS. Shell would later score for Anna Maria, and then in bottom of the eighth, he recorded his 101st career hit off a single up the middle.

Rose-Hulman relied on a 6-run fourth inning rally and a 13-hit offensive attack to top Hanover College 12-7 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Wednesday afternoon. The Fightin' Engineers also completed the ninth inning of a 7-2 win over Hanover this afternoon. The game was originally suspended due to darkness on March 13. Jacob Petrisko finished off a 9-inning complete game by allowing no earned runs with seven strikeouts over the course of the contest. In the regularly scheduled game, Manuel Lopez led Rose-Hulman's offense with four hits including a double. Lopez also had two RBIs and scored one run.

Salve Regina University ran its season win streak to five games after clinching two victories today against Curry College, 8-4 and 7-3, and its overall unbeaten streak to 10 games (9-0-1). The Seahawks have not lost since getting eliminated by Trinity College, 7-2, in the 2019 NCAA Division III Baseball Regional Championships hosted by the Bantams (May 18, 2019 - over 1,065 days). The Seahawks and Colonels resumed their game that had started at Curry in Milton, Mass., on Sunday. By the time the teams were done at Reynolds Field, Salve Regina freshman right-hander Finn Doherty finished the final frame. In game two, Seahawk head coach Eric Cirella used seven pitchers in the game and five of them combined for a dozen strikeouts.

action on Wednesday afternoon at Trelease Park.

Case Western Reserve University continued a stretch of 10 games in eight days by sweeping a pair of seven-inning games at Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Terriers 6-3 in extra innings in the first game and claiming a 10-3 victory in the second contest of the day. The Spartans have now won four-straight games and six of their last seven contests overall to improve to 8-4 on the season. Hiram dropped to 5-11 overall following the loss. CWRU also completed a four-game sweep of their season series against the Terriers.

UW-Oshkosh and UW- Eay Claire met for their conference openers and the Titans stood tall as they swept the Blugold 17-7 and 5-4. This was the first game at Tiedemann Field since April 27, 2019. In the 40th meeting between teams and first since May 14, 1995, UWO set a WIAC record with six stolen bases in first inning and totaled 10 overall. Hunter Staniske led all hitters with four hits, including a double and two triples, four runs scored and four runs batted in In the nightcap UWO scored five runs on five hits in fifth inning that proved to be just e=nough for their 36th win against five losses with UW-EC. Jarrett Scheelk allowed only one hit through five innings and ended game with 9 strikeouts in eight innings pitched.

Benedictine University used the big inning to take down visiting Concordia Wisconsin, 13-1, in non-conference play on Wednesday afternoon. Weather shortened the doubleheader to a single game due to cold temperatures with a second ganme to be rescheduled. Robbie Dudzinski threw a complete game, striking out eight while allowing just one run on six hits without issuing a walk. The top four Benedictine hitters in the lineup accounted for six hits, nine runs and eight RBIs as Brenden Norberg notched three hits at the bottom of the lineup.

The Colby Mules took on St. Joseph's College this evening and after making a steady comeback were able to beat the Monks 5-3. Early on the Monks were able to score with little in return from the Mules. Pitching was a struggle today for the Mules, having five pitchers throughout the game they were unable to get into a groove. The rest of the team's play was able to make up for that with three runs scored in the fifth inning to tie the game up. Cole Palmeri scored the first run for the Mules off a bunt from Patrick McConnell. Matthew Panker was next to score for the Mules and the inning was finished off with a run from McConnell. The sixth inning was scoreless but McConnell scored in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Andrew Russell. The Mules finished the game with Cabot Maher scoring off a wild pitch.

The Rockford University Regents (6-7) split its doubleheader Wednesday afternoon against the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors (3-11). Rockford was trailing the whole first game until it scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth and eventually win 8-7. However, the second game did not go as planned for the Regents as it dropped the second game 6-3. With Christian Dahlstrom earning the save in the first game, he now holds the RU school record for career saves with nine career saves.
