WPU Pioneers get second straight shutout

University of Rochester picked up two wins to open Liberty League conference play, defeating host RIT 4-2 and 14-9 in the doubleheader sweep on Friday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.

No. 23 William Paterson (13-2, 4-0 NJAC) posted its second straight shutout and its seventh consecutive victory with a 5-0 decision at Ramapo
(3-3, 2-2 NJAC). Senior Jason Palmeri scattered three hits over 8.0 innings, registering six strikeouts (3-1). Junior Riley Weis took over in the ninth inning and struck out two of the three batters he faced. Ramapo broke up Palmeri's no-hit bid with a fifth-inning double, and threatened in the seventh with bases loaded and two outs, but a ground ball ended the frame.

Washington University defeated Westminster (Mo.), 11-3 and 10-4, in a pair of doubleheaders on Friday. The Bears are one of 16 undefeated teams left in all divisions as they improve to 16-0. Senior Collin Kahal recorded three runs and one RBI on the day with senior Henry Singer tallying a team-high four runs. The Bears flaunted its strong offense from the start in game one. The second game proved to be tougher to get rolling for the WashU offense but runs came in a quantity enought for an easy win.

Fitchburg State split a MASCAC twinbill, 7-4 and 2-3, against Salem State on Friday afternoon at the Central Campus Baseball Field. Junior Matthew Ambrosino scattered five hits and Zachary May pitched a scoreless inning in relief as Fitchburg State picked up their first win of the 2021 season with a 7-4 victory. Starting pitchers Burton and Fitchburg State's Sharpe matched zeros in game two as both pitchers did not allow a run through four innings. The Vikings' Zach Piroh broke the tie in the fifth, lacing a one-out double into left field, that brought home two runs as Salem State took their first lead of the day. An insurance run for Salem State in the seventh proved big when the Falcons scored two late runs.

The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor led early and then held on late as the Cru posted a 10-9 victory over Howard Payne Friday afternoon in Brownwood. Malek Bolin led the Cru with four hits and three RBI and Caimyn Holiday, Hunter McQuary and Rhett Grosz all added two hits apiece. Trevor Ripke earned the win for UMHB to raise his record to 2-4. Ripke struck out two and allowed just two hits and a run in one a two-thirds innings of relief work.

No. 16 UW-Whitewater recorded 32 hits in two games Friday in back-to-back wins over UW-Oshkosh in a WIAC doubleheader at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium. The Warhawks (13-2 overall, 7-1 WIAC) posted a 15-0 victory in seven innings in the opener before defeating the Titans 8-5 in Game 2. In Game 1, UW-Whitewater mashed 18 hits, and eight of the team's nine starting batters tallied two or more hits. UW-W broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth with six runs, and added four more in the sixth. In the nightcap, the Warhawks turned a 5-2 deficit into a three-run lead with six runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Belhaven took the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the visiting University of Texas at Dallas Comets setting up a Game 3 rubber match on Saturday afternoon. In the first game of the two game set, the visitors jumped out to an early lead scoring twice in the opening frame and added runs in four more innings to win game one 9-1 in seven innings. In the second game Belhaven starter Brett Sanchez went all nine innings in the 6-2 win.  He allowed just two runs on three hits. Sanchez recorded eight strikeouts and improved to 8-1 on the season. At the plate the middle of the order did the damage for the Blazers. Hunter White finished 2-4 with a triple and a pair of runs scored. Trip Benson finished 2-4 as well with 3 RBI and a run scored while Nathan Herron went 2-4 with a triple and a pair of RBI.

The 9th ranked NC Wesleyan College Bishops cruised to a big 18-1 win over conference foe Pfeiffer University in the first game of their weekend series on Friday afternoon. With their 4th straight win, Wesleyan improves to 21-3 overall and 9-1 in the East Division. Pfeiffer falls to 7-7 overall and 3-3 in the East. Senior catcher Brad Pennington got the Bishops off to a good start in the first inning crushing a three-run homer that scored infielders Tyson Bass and Nate Hibbs and this was the start of a solid outing by the offense. On the mound, senior Derrick Carter led the Bishops with 7 innings allowing just one run on 7 hits with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts while senior reliever Robby Casey finished the game throwing 2 scoreless innings allowing just two hits with a strikeout.

Earlham College and Mount St. Joseph had to endure a nearly two-hour lightning delay to complete their Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday night at Sadler Stadium, but when both games were complete the Quakers emerged with a sweep over the Lions. Earlham notched an 8-3 victory over MSJ in game one, before surviving the delay in a 5-2 triumph in game two. Earlham starter Joey Gerbus fanned nine MSJ batters and scattered six hits over seven-and-a-third innings on the mound to improve to 4-0. Jacob Renner came on to close out the game and pitched one-and-a-third innings of no-hit ball with three strikeouts. Danny Dopp finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with one run and two runs batted in. Isaiah Shake and Christian Lancianese each had two hits. Nick Carrizales started on the mound and lasted six innings on his way to the win, recording four strikeouts and scattering three hits. Domanick Michael picked up the save after coming on in relief of Chance Strickley, who pitched the seventh and eighth innings for the Quakers.

Augustana trailed Wheaton 3-2 going to the second inning Friday, but when the top half of the frame was over, Coach Greg Wallace's club led 16-3. Starter Matt Hoban settled in and shut the Thunder out over the next five innings as the Vikings cruised to an 18-3 win at Lee Pfund Stadium. 24th-ranked Augustana improved to 15-3 overall and 7-3 in the CCIW, while Wheaton dropped to 6-12 on the season and 4-8 in the league. Plenty of Vikings had big days offensively. Jacob Barker reached in all five plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with two walks and a hit-by-pitch. He scored three runs and knocked in three. Brett Benedetti and Mitchell Owens each finished 3-for-5. Benedetti had three RBI and Mitchell Owens scored three times.

Coe College extended its winning streak to 12 games on Friday, defeating Loras College 8-3 in game one and 9-8 in the nightcap. Game one starter TJ Johnson benefited from four early runs in game one, working all seven innings while improving his record to 6-0 on the season. In game two, the Kohawks scored seven runs in the fourth inning and fought off a late Duhawk rally to win their 12th straight of the season. The Kohawk offense picked up 18 hits in the two games, including seven extra-base hits and one home run. Deardorff led Coe at the plate, picking up three hits and four RBI while smashing his second homer of the season.

Brockport wrapped up the sweep of Fredonia and improved to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in SUNYAC Conference play after two convincing wins over the Blue Devils at the Clark V. Whited Complex on Friday. Brockport won game one 16-10 and completed the sweep with a 14-6 game two victory. Matt O'Dair extended his hitting streak to seven games as he went 5-for-7 with five RBI's and three runs scored on the afternoon. The five hits included four doubles. Tom Kretzler went 3-for-5 at the plate with four runs scored and four RBI's. Kretzler hit two home runs in game one and also pitched 6.0 innings and struck out seven in game two to earn the victory.

Immaculata took to the road on Friday afternoon to face Neumann in the first of a three-game weekend series vs the Knights. Immaculata got out to an early lead in the third inning and never relinquished this advantage en route to a 10-0 victory over the Knights on Friday afternoon. Ryan Crowell got the start for Immaculata to open the three-game set tossing five scoreless innings scattering just three hits while striking out to earn his third victory of the season.

For the eighth time in its last eight contests, Marymount University walked away with a victory after the Saints dispatched the Wolverines of Wesley College by a final score of 21-4. It was another offensive showcase for Marymount's bats. The Saints scattered 13 hits throughout the contest to dominate the Wolverines. Wesley mustered eight hits, but MU's arms surrendered just three runs to secure the comfortable win.

Plymouth State University picked up its first Little East Conference win of the season after earning a split with Keene State College in an LEC double header at Parish Field on Friday afternoon. Keene State's bats were dynamic in the opener on the way to a 25-1 win, but Plymouth State rallied in game two using a seven-run first inning to spark a 15-5 victory. Plymouth State was playing its first home game since Apr. 30, 2019.

Senior third baseman Luke Broadhurst hit two of the team's four home runs in the second game and the pitching staff extended a long scoreless streak into the eighth inning of the nightcap as Eastern Connecticut State University remained undefeated in the Little East Conference with 5-0, 12-2 wins over Rhode Island College Friday afternoon at the Eastern Baseball Stadium. The second game was stopped after the Warriors scored four times in the bottom of the eighth to invoke the ten-run rule. Ranked third in New England, Eastern (14-1, 8-0 LEC) extended its season win streak to eight and snapped a three-game losing streak at the hands of Rhode Island (5-7, 1-3 LEC). The Warriors have played all of their games at home this season. The pitching staff carried a streak of 27 scoreless innings into the eighth inning of Game 2 before the Anchormen broke through for their only runs of the afternoon on senior third baseman Ray Zincone's one-out, two-run double that scored junior rightfielder Nick D'Ambra and freshman first baseman Cal Parrillo.

Utica College improved to a 3-1 start in conference play as they swept visiting Houghton College by scores of 10-9 and 11-5 in an Empire 8 doubleheader on Friday at the Utica College baseball field. Zac Cronk led the way over the course of the two matchups with a 5-of-7 hitting performance. He scored four runs and drove in another four. Shamariah McCullough finished the doubleheader going 4-for-7 with 3 runs scored and an RBI. Sean Vanegas was 3-for-7 with three runs scored and an RBI. Michael Muentener scored five runs and had a triple in the second game. Utica combined to hammer out 31 hits combined in the two contests, compared to just 20 for Houghton. Graduate student Matthew Fitzgerald played in the 100th game of his career in the first game.

Castleton University earned a doubleheader split against UMass-Dartmouth Friday afternoon in a Little East Conference showdown at Spartans Field. UMass Dartmouth won game one 13-6 with Castleton taking the second 6-5 in 10 innings. The Corsairs (2-6, 2-4 LEC) came out of the gates swinging but facing two deficits, the Spartans fought back. They did not have an answer when they fell behind for the third time finishin on the low end of the scoring. After suffering a blowout loss in game one of the doubleheader, the Spartans once again faced a deficit at the start of game two. They brought a narrow lead into the ninth inning but Mass-Dartmouth leveled the score at five. The Spartans won the game in the bottom half of the 10th inning when adam Newton singled to center, scoriong Hunter Perkins with the winning run.

Designated hitter Miles Feaster and second baseman Eric Havner each drove in three runs as Montclair State, down five runs before taking its first turn at bat, roared back for a 21-5 victory over The College of New Jersey at Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday afternoon. Freshman right-hander Jack Haveson tossed 6 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, striking out seven as the Red Hawks (10-3) swept the home-and-home series from the Lions (2-7, 1-3 NJAC) adding today's win to its 9-0 victory in Ewing on Thursday. MSU has won two straight over TCNJ after dropping the six previous meetings.
