Buena Vista gives Washington road woes

Alex Kokos hit a sacrifice fly in the 12th inning to drive in the winning run as #17 Rowan defeated Ramapo, 5-4, to earn a sweep in today's NJAC doubleheader. The Profs won the first game, 10-2, as Trip McCaffrey went 4-for-5 with a run and RBI and Kokos was 3-for-6 with two runs and one RBI.

Buena Vista stepped out of conference play on Saturday and pulled of a big upset of top-ranked Washington University-St. Louis by sweeping a doubleheader from the Bears by scores of 8-2 and 3-1. The Beavers were at the top of their game all afternoon and got stellar pitching of their own in the process. Senior Tyler Tennyson got the job done with both the arm and the bat in the opener as he tossed 7.1 innings, scattering six hits and allowing just two runs. He also went 4-for-5 at the plate with a double and three RBI. Aiden Brock got the final two outs of the eighth to get it a five-run lead before Harris took over in the ninth to work around a hit to strike out the side. That momentum carried over into game two as BVU tallied 12 more hits while holding the Bears to just four.

Timely home runs, plus key pitching performances from junior Colin Springer, lifted the 25th-ranked College of Wooster to a non-conference Saturday sweep over upset-minded Hiram College at Fishel Field in Hiram, Ohio. The Fighting Scots, back in the Top 25 Poll after falling out for three weeks, took game one 9-7 before winning the nightcap 5-4. Junior Colin Springer pitched in both games, earning a win and a save on Saturday. Wooster now sports a seven-game winning streak.

No. 8 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater used a potent offense Saturday to earn two victories at UW-Stevens Point in a non-conference doubleheader. The Warhawks (21-4 overall) put together one big inning early in each contest, defeating the Pointers 12-5 in Game 1 before finishing the day with a 17-1 triumph in seven innings. In the opener, UW-Whitewater collected seven runs in the top of the third inning and never trailed. n Game 2, UW-Whitewater plated seven runs on six hits in the first inning and didn't look back, and three Warhawk pitchers combined to hold UW-Stevens Point (18-7) to two hits and two walks in the contest.

Head coach Scott Laverty won his 200th game at Chapman and Chapman University took the series from Cal Lutheran with a doubleheader split. The Panthers won 9-4 in the early game before falling 18-12 in the second game. The Panthers scored 20-plus runs over the two games as the offenses caught fire on Saturday. With the split, Laverty improved to 200-88 in his eight years at Chapman. The 2019 National Coach of the Year has won 69 percent of his games since taking over the Panther program and 59 percent of the games in his 22 years as a head coach. Junior Cooper Foard put on a clinic in the first game of the doubleheader, driving in six runs while going 2-for-4. Foard hit a three-run homer in the third, a two-run single in the sixth and a sacrifice fly in the eighth for the career-high output. He also caught a runner trying to steal. Senior Riley Glenn went seven strong innings on the mound to pick up the win. He struck out two and allowed three runs on six hits. Freshman Turner White closed out the final two innings. The Panthers suffered their first loss of the season in game two in a wild 18-12 loss that saw the teams combine for 37 hits. The Kingsmen came out swinging and didn't let up as they scored at least a run in every frame.

Graduate student Matthew Valente recorded four extra-base hits and drove in nine runs in two games as 10th-ranked Babson College swept Emerson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday at the New England Baseball Complex. The Beavers routed the Lions in the opener, 23-1, and took game two 11-6. Valente went 3-for-6 with a double, a triple and a home run, and drove in five runs to pace the Beavers' attack. Graduate student AJ DiFillipo (Peabody, Mass.) hit a three-run homer and senior Jack Ward (Danvers, Mass.) drew three of Babson's 19 walks to go along with two RBI and two runs scored in the game one win. Babson's 19 walks in game one are a new single-game program record. The previous mark was 18 bases on balls in a 23-7 win over Edgewood on March 18, 2019. In game two, Valente doubled, tripled and drove in four runs, junior Thomas Lapham walked twice and added three RBI, and classmate Andrew Dembowski went 1-for-3 with three walks and a run scored for the Green and White. The Beavers are now 21-0 all-time against Emerson.

The second-ranked Trinity Tigers swept a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader from 19th-ranked Centenary College on Saturday, winning 9-6 in both games. Trinity is 25-3 overall and 12-1 in SCAC play following the two victories, while Centenary falls to 28-7 overall and 12-5 in conference. The Tigers rallied from a six-run deficit to take game one, then never trailed in the second game. Michael Goodrich homered in both games and finished with a total of five RBI to lead Trinity's offense. Brandon Hance got the opening win in relief to move to 2-0 this season, while Matthew Thomas locked down his fifth save. Joseph Chavana improved to a team-leading 5-0 on the year with a relief win of his own.

In a huge College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin doubleheader with Millikin University on Saturday, North Central College extended its winning streak to 11 games by taking both games of the twin bill at Workman Family Field by scores of 6-2 and 5-3. Justin Rios paced the offense in game one with a 3-for-5 showing with two runs scored and a RBI. Meanwhile, Ryan Behling allowed just one more run over his next six innings after the first-inning unearned tally, earning the win while going seven strong with four punch outs. Patrick Schaefer came on two finish the game, allowing a run in the ninth but locked down his third save of the season and the eighth of his career to move him into a tie for seventh all-time in program history.

No. 21 Wheaton College faced off against Coast Guard Academy in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference, doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Coast Guard Academy. The Lyons took both game one 10-4 as well as, game two 18-3. In Game one of the double header, AJ Guindon went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a double, While Jacob Studley tallied a 3-for-5 day with two doubles along with three runs batted in and one run scored leading the Lyons to a 10-4 victory. Senior pitcher Gavin Reily went 7.1 strong innings of work only allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out three. Game two was a close battle through four innings as the score was only 3-1, in the fifth inning the bats came alive and Wheaton put up a crooked number of seven runs fo0r the win.

Freshman Cam Seymour walked with the bases loaded to force in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 4-3 victory over the visiting Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader Saturday at Ed Flaherty Field. Eastern Connecticut won the opening game of the twin bill 7-1 behind the combined five-hit pitching of junior Aidan Dunn and sophomore Nathan Furino. The Huskies and Warriors, both ranked in the top 25 nationally, split their home-and-home doubleheaders. USM now stands at 16-8 overall and 7-4 in Little East Conference play. Eastern Connecticut is 21-4 overall and leads the LEC at 10-1.

Washington & Jefferson defeated Franciscan in a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference games at Ross Memorial Park on Saturday morning and afternoon. W&J won the games 15-3, 12-0. W&J moves to 25-1 on the season and 19-1 in PAC play. Franciscan falls to 11-11, 10-9 PAC. The Presidents scored 27 runs over two games against Franciscan to back up strong pitching performances from Henry Litman and Tyler Horvat.

Coe College secured victories in both games over the University of Dubuque on Saturday, winning the overall four-game American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) series, 3-1. Coe downed UD 5-2 in the opener before notching a dramatic come-from-behind 10-9 win in 15 innings in game two. The Kohawks took the first sizable advantage in game two with two runs in the fifth, propelled by a Daniel Hawes RBI double and an Evans RBI bunt single. Coe was able to keep that lead until the eighth, but UD used a homer and sacrifice fly to tie it up, 4-4. Both sides were blanked for three straight innings from the ninth through the eleventh, setting the stage for a dramatic 12th frame when both teams scored five to extend the game. Jordan Kaplan launched a game-tying grand slam over the center field fence to knot the score and send the game to the next inning. After the wild 12th inning, both sides' bats went cold again for the 13th and 14th frames. In the bottom of the 15th, a one-out single from Issac Evans set the table for the Kohawks. A wild pitch moved Evans to second during Matthew Schrader's at-bat. With the runner in scoring position, Schrader hit a bouncing ball to shortstop that found its way into the outfield grass, securing the 10-9 win for Coe in walk-off fashion.
