Durbin cycle highlights Washington sweep

Greencastle, Ind., May 8, 2021 – The No. 1 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team's offense dominated en route to two victories on Saturday. WashU improves to 26-3 as DePauw drops to 15-21. Head coach Pat Bloom earned his 150th win at WashU with game two's victory.

Game 1: WashU 22, DePauw 1

Junior Caleb Durbin had an outstanding day, hitting for the cycle in his first four at bats. He tied the program record in runs in a single game, set in April 2012, with five. Durbin's 10 total bases in the game ranks him fifth in program history.

Junior Andrew Huang makes his first appearance in the Bear record book, tying for third in runs in a single game with four.

WashU recorded four or more runs in five of the seven innings with Durbin, senior Johnny LaMantia and sophomore Broghan O'Connor tallying a team-high four RBIs apiece. Huang and fellow juniors Tim Van Kirk and Bo Anderson each totaled two RBIs.

DePauw found its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Twenty-two runs is the highest number of runs scored by the Bears since April 24, 2016.

Game 2: WashU 4, DePauw 3

Van Kirk led off game two with a single up the middle, followed by stealing both second and third base. Durbin's single to left advanced Van Kirk home for the first run of the game.

Senior Collin Kahal, O'Connor and Van Kirk hit singles in the second inning to load up the bases. First-year Clayton Miller's at bat advanced each player one base to make it a 2-0 game.

The Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth after three singles and a walk to tie up the game at 2-2. The third run was scored in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.

Van Kirk hit his first homer of the season to tie up the game once again. Durbin made his way around the bases with a walk, stolen base, a throwing error and a wild pitch to put the Bears up 4-3 in the seventh.

Senior Jared Fong entered in the sixth to close out the game.
