North Central breaks wins record, survives in CCIW tourney

In a battle of the top-ranked and third-ranked teams in the New York Region, the Lakers and Red Dragons split a pair of close games to force a winner-take-all SUNYAC Championship Final on Saturday starting at 12 p.m. at Cortland's Robert H. Wallace Field. Cortland won game two 11-10 and Oswego State took the opener 7-6.

Needing to win twice to stay alive in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Tournament, the North Central College completed the task at hand, opening with a 9-2 win over Elmhurst University at Pfund Stadium before returning to Zimmerman Stadium to fight out a tough 5-4 victory over Augustana College in the nightcap. With the two wins North Central improves to 36-8 on the season, breaking the school record for single-season victories set 30 years ago in 1991. Carroll and Millikin are the remaining teams in the tournament with Milikin the only team without a loss.

The sixth-ranked and top-seeded Salisbury University moved to within one win of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament championship with an 8-1 win over the second-seeded Christopher Newport Captains in Game 1 of the C2C Championship Series on Friday afternoon at Sea Gull Baseball Stadium. C2C Player of the Year Justin Meekins went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs at the top of the order for the Sea Gulls. C2C Pitcher of the Year Clayton Dwyer (10-0) won his 10th straight decision to begin the 2021 campaign by shutting down the Captains over seven-plus innings. Dwyer allowed one run on seven hits, walking three and striking out seven. He benefited from double play grounders in the first and third innings and stranded two men in scoring position to end the seventh.

The Cardinals entered Friday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Playoff winner's bracket game against top-seeded St. Thomas having already played the Tommies four times this season — and managed just five runs, combined, in those four contests. St. Thomas, meanwhile, had feasted on Saint Mary's pitching in those four games, scoring 41 runs in posting a perfect 4-0 regular-season record against the Cardinals. That all changed on this sunny afternoon at Saint John's Becker Park, as the Cardinals scored six runs — including four in the decisive seventh inning — in beating the top-seeded Tommies 6-3, earning SMU a berth in Saturday's playoff championship game. The Tommies (27-6) had a 13-game win streak halted, and now must must win three elimination games to take the playoff crown. In the MIAC's evening game, St. Thomas (28-6) rallied from deficits of 2-1, 4-2 and 6-4 before surging for four runs in the eighth inning to go ahead and adding two insurance runs in the ninth. Gustavus (27-7) scored once in the bottom of the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate with one out, but a fly out and ground out ended the game with the Tommies earning a 10-8 win.

The No. 5 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater won its first two games Friday at the 2021 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship Presented by Culver's to advance to the title game of the conference tournament. The Warhawks (36-5 overall), the tournament's No. 2 seed, edged third-seeded UW-La Crosse 5-4 in the first game of the day, and followed up the performance with a 10-0 triumph in seven innings against No. 4 seed UW-Stout to cap the day. UW-Whitewater will play in the WIAC championship game at 3 p.m. Saturday against the winner of the UW-Stout/UW-Stevens Point game that starts the day at 12 p.m. With a loss, the Warhawks would play the same team again Sunday at 12 p.m. in a winner-take-all contest.

Nick Rhoades hit a three-run home run, Alexandar Rivas pitched 6.1 strong innings and Cal Lutheran defeated La Verne 12-3 to open the SCIAC Postseason Tournament on Friday afternoon. The Kingsmen travel to Chapman for the remainder of the tournament. Cal Lutheran continues the double-elimination format on Saturday at 2 p.m. Chapman will greet the Kingsmen in the winners game as they defeated Redlands 7-6 in 10 innings.

For the second straight day, Transylvania unfurled an offensive masterpiece, defeating the Earlham College Quakers, 12-4 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon at Kentucky Proud Park. The Pioneers scored multiple runs in four of the first five innings of the day for an insurmountable lead to remain undefeated on the winners' bracket and advance into Saturday afternoon's HCAC Championship game at 2:00 p.m. Transylvania moved to 30-10 overall, achieving its first 30-win season of the Zack Getsee era and its first 30-win ledger since the 2008 season. The Pioneers now look ahead to a 2:00 p.m. championship game on Saturday; as the lone remaining team in the winners' bracket. Transylvania will play the winner of Earlham and Bluffton.

No. 17 Shenandoah University split with host University of Lynchburg forcing a decisive game three as the Hornets won 12-5 in the early contest and Lynchburg, 11-5, in the late one. In game one Shenandoah battled back from a 4-0 deficit with a four-run third before breaking the game open with a five-spot in the seventh. SU scored its five runs in the seventh on just three hits as Lynchburg issued three bases loaded walks and hit another batter with the bases loaded. Catcher Matt Moon had the only RBI hit of the frame as he brought home Haden Madagan with a single through the left side. In game two it was lynchburg who was in control. Lynchburg scored one run in the first along with four in the third and two in the fourth to take a commanding lead over Shenandoah (31-10). SU attempted to claw back into it with one run in the fourth and three in the fifth only to see Lynchburg scored a combined four runs in the seventh through ninth innings.

The top-seeded Marymount University punched its ticket to its first-ever Atlantic East Conference championship game with a 6-2 victory over third-seeded Cabrini University on Friday afternoon at Nationals Youth Baseball Academy. Despite the Cavaliers putting up single runs in the first and third innings, senior Drew Mead settled into a strong start on the mound to earn the win. In six innings of action, Mead scattered seven hits, while striking out eight and only allowing two runs. After Cabrini scored in the third for a 2-0 edge, the Saints broke out for four runs in the bottom half of the inning, adding two late for the final total. Immaculata defeated Wesley 10-3 and Cabrini 13-6 to join Marymount on Champioinship Saturday.
