Huskies chase Blue Jays in opener

No 13 Southern Maine Huskies overcame a 5-1 deficit, rallying to score six runs in the final four innings of the game, and defeat the No. 5 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays 7-5 in ten innings in the Huskies' 2022 season-opener. Senior Jason Komulainen was 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and one run scored, while senior Brogan Searle-Belanger hit a game-tying home run in the top of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Sophomore Bryce Afthim earned the win in relief.

No. 6 UW-Whitewater continued its trip to San Antonio, Texas, on Friday by finishing 1-1 in a doubleheader against No. 17 Trinity. The Warhawks (1-2 overall) took the opener 7-3 before falling by a 10-9 score in Game 2. In Game 1, UW-Whitewater took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. UW-W's pitchers left 17 runners on base in the contest. In the nightcap, the Warhawks plated four runs in the top of the ninth inning for a 9-6 advantage before Trinity returned the favor with four of its own in the bottom half to walk off the game.

No. 16th Texas-Dallas saw its historic unbeaten 10-0 start to the season come to an end with 9-1 loss to Concordia Texas Friday afternoon, but came back in the nightcap for a 9-0 win to earn a split in the American Southwest Conference doubleheader. The Comets, who entered the series as one of the top-hitting teams in the ASC, ran into CTX's highly-rated pitching staff in the opener, managing just three hits in the 7-inning opening loss, their first of the season. But in the second game, UTD's bats came to life for a 14-hit assault and got brilliant shutout pitching from transfer Dylan Hugley and freshman Derek Brieden.

Sophomore Jacob Mead had a record tying day as Finlandia (2-6) swept Martin Luther (0-2) 12-6 and 11-2, Friday at Lake Myrtle Sports Park. The win in game one snapped a 63-game losing streak (April 15, 2019) and was the first doubleheader sweep since April 29, 2018. "The performance by the pitching staff was great today!," said head coach Evan Brandt. "Jacob (Mead) and Cale (Fransen) threw amazing games. They both did a great job of commanding the zone and keeping hitters off balance. The offense was nothing short of electric today. They did an amazing job as an offense all day." This is the first time in school history that pitchers have struck out at least 10 batters in both games of a doubleheader.

Cabrini got back into the win column with a pair of victories, 6-2 and 14-2 over Purchase College. In game one, the Cavaliers recorded 13 hits in the victory, as Mack McKisson and Zack Brook each recorded three apiece. Peralta, Priest and senior Dustin Sutton all finished the game with two hits. Senior Jonathan Baker pitcher a complete game for his third victory of the season, striking out three and allowing two earned runs. Following the low-scoring opener Cabrini's bats light up the nightcap, as the Cavaliers finished with 14 runs on 13 hits. On the mound, freshman James Mercante pitched a complete game, with three strikeouts and two runs allowed as he improved to 3-0 to start his career. Mack McKisson's 200th career hit, a two RBI double to centerfield can in the fifth inning of the nightcap.

A high-scoring, seven total home run game for Hope closed out with a 14-13 comeback victory on the road for the orange and blue on Friday. The Flying Dutch went down 7-2 by the top of the 6th inning. That's when the rally caps came on. Franklin popped two home runs off, back-to-back, in the bottom of the 6th and in the bottom of the seventh put Franklin up by three, but Hope College doubled down and climbed back for a second time. Evan Maday, a senior from Grand Rapids, Michigan singled in the top of the ninth to plate one, and Andrew Gilpin would send in the game-winning runs with a 3 RBI double for a 14-13 final as Mason Belmore closed out the game.

Stevenson battled back for an exciting 5-4 walk-off victory in the 10th inning against Ursinus on Friday afternoon at Sugar Field. Stevenson (3-7-1) received a collective effort from the bullpen, while Jonathan Brandt came up in the clutch with his game-winning single in the top of the 10th. Patrick O'Farrell tossed three innings of relief as one of six Mustang pitchers to see the mound on Friday.

Mount Union picked up its first two wins of the season
in first two games in Florida with 4-3 and 7-3
victories over Lakeland at Lake Myrtle Park.

Heidelberg thrived under the warm Florida sun, pummeling Rhode Island College, 14-1, in seven innings. After struggling offensively last weekend, the Student Princes pounded out 14 hits, including homers by Keaton Mark and Zane Mirgon in the second inning. While the bats pounded away, 'Berg starter Ross Thompson (1-1) was sharp. He allowed one run on six hits in six full innings of work, fanning five. Payton Moser made his collegiate debut, striking out two in a perfect inning of relief. Heidelberg got after it on the basepaths, swiping 10 bases on the day.

Senior third baseman Joe Norton went 5-for-7 with four RBI as Montclair State scored in all but innings in a 15-0 victory over Stevens in the first game of a weekend series at Dobbelaar Field on Friday afternoon. Junior lefthander Patrick Cuccurullo and Matthew Tiplady combined on the Red Hawks' third shutout of the season, as MSU (6-1) extended its winning streak to six games.Senior Peter Cosentino had three hits, including a home run and two RBI, while senior catcher Anthony. Guarino was 4-for-5 with three RBI. Second baseman Reece Malek had two hits and drove in a pair of runs in a reserve role.

Anthony Fusco allowed one run over six innings and Cortland offensively recorded nine hits and 13 walks as the nationally top-ranked Red Dragons defeated host Merchant Marine Academy, 10-1, in a matchup of 2021 NCAA qualifiers. Fusco earned his first win as a Red Dragon after giving up five hits and no walks with two strikeouts. He recorded 16 of his 18 outs on balls hit on the ground. Patrick Dalton tossed two perfect innings of relief with two strikeouts and Triston Olmo retired the side in order with one strikeout in the ninth. Matthew Krafft finished 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBI and Antonio Pragana was 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored. Danny Coleman and James Varian each drew three walks, with Varian also adding an RBI single and a hit-by-pitch.

Moravian completed its trip to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a 6-1 victory over Waynesburg College at Lake Myrtle Park Friday. Moravian had ten hits in the game with Matt Madigan collecting two hits and scoring once. Eight other Greyhounds each had one hit, and both Brett Moyer and David Olsakowski both scored twice. The Hounds sent four pitchers to the mound in a set rotation. The staff combined to allow just two hits and a total of seven baserunners in the contest. Junior Ethan Weber had two strikeouts in the first two innings of the game on the bump and earned the victory while sophomore David Ciaccio had a pair of strikeouts in two innings of action. Freshman Matt Snyder tossed three innings in his collegiate debut while senior Eddie Olsen earned his second career save and first since 2019 with a pair of strikeouts in the final two innings.

No. 18 Shenandoah University opened up Mr. V Memorial Classic play with a 13-4 non-league victory over Keystone Friday afternoon. Shenandoah (9-1) scored the first 11 runs of the game to cruise to its seventh straight victory. The offense was more than enough for junior Jacob Faivre (3-0). Faivre tossed the initial six innings and struck out six against seven hits and two walks. Shenandoah banged out 15 hits in the win with Frankie Ritter and Kyle Lisa getting three each and Pearce Bucher two.

Texas Lutheran won both games of their Friday doubleheader against Sul Ross State with a 4-1 win in game one and a 7-5 win in game two at Kokernot Field. The Bulldogs improved to 4-6 on the season with the wins. Joe Burch pitched a complete game, throwing all seven innings of game one, striking out four batters to pick up his first win of the season. Burch walked two, allowed four hits, and just one earned run. Game two was a slugfest that saw the two teams combine for 23 hits.

Freshman third baseman Noah Brazytis drove in the winning run in the opener and plated the tying run during an 8-run fourth inning in the nightcap as Ohio Wesleyan swept a non-conference doubleheader from Albion, 3-2 and 8-7 on Friday at Littick Field. Max Pershin led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice. Brazytis followed with a single down the leftfield line, scoring Pershin. In game two, Albion rallied in the ninth, with Zac Gray plating a run on a sacrifice fly and Austyn Stephens smashing a 2-run double to make it 8-7 before the game was called because of darkness.

Rutgers-Newark picked up their third straight win this afternoon at Weequahic Park against non-conference foes, City College of New York, 20-2. Rutgers-Newark (3-1) had another solid outing, this time led by Ryan Lebow who finished 2-for-3 with two runs and six RBIs. Joining him in the multi-hit game was Gianmarco Acevedo who went 2-for-2 with a run scored. On the mound, Daniel Reardon (1-0) hurled 57 pitches in six innings of action and tallied 9 strikeouts with just one earned run. CCNY (1-2) was led by Xavier Grobbel who finished 2-for-4 with an RBI while John Creegan also went 2-for-4 from the dish. On the mound, Matthew Kue (0-1) allowed six runs on 42 pitches.

Chatham split its second doubleheader of the young season, winning game one 11-3 and dropping game two 5-2 to Elms College on Friday afternoon. The Cougars record improves to 4-1 after the double header. It was all Chatham in game one, with the Cougars scoring in each of the first four innings. Game two was a much different story from the first one. Elms went out and scored the first five runs of the game, including one in the first and two in the fourth and fifth innings. Chatham scored in both the sixth and seventh innings with a Griener single and a double play that allowed the final run to score, but the Cougars were still handed their first loss of the season.

Michael Lapczynski and Tim Huxen combined for seven RBI as No. 24 Kean moved to 10-0 with a 9-5 win over Hanover College on Friday afternoon. Huxen was 3-for-6 with two doubles, three runs scored and three RBI while Lapczynski was 2-for-5 with four RBI. Collin Kiernan (3-0) picked up the win with a seven and two thirds inning performance allowing five runs and 10 hits. He struck out five and walked one. Nick Nemes shut down all four batters he faced to close things out.

The No. 4 Adrian Bulldogs led early in the game, but a big inning for Berry put Adrian behind. The Bulldogs made it a close one, but couldn't overcome the deficit and Berry defeated Adrian 13-7. Berry struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second off Adrian pitch Daniel Gutierrez. In the top half of the third inning Thomas Miller hit a bases clearing triple to go up 3-2. Berry responded with a big six run inning in the bottom of the third to go up 8-3. The Bulldogs took advantage of fielding errors by Berry scoring two unearned runs in the fourth to make it 8-5. Another error from Berry came in the sixth score another pair of runs to put the Bulldogs within one. Berry took back the momentum by scoring two in the sixth and three in the eighth to come away with the victory.

Opening Day for Fredonia State and debut for new head coach Jordan Basile resulted in a 13-6 win over Neumann in Myrtle Beach. The Devils pounded out 14 hits en route the win. Tyler Phillips and Anthony Kinney led the attack with three hits apiece. Ethan Blaisdell and Pat Bigham both collected a pair of safeties. Brian Chatt connected for a homerun and reached base three times. O'Brochta – on a pitch count – was credited with the win for the Devils. He went four innings, giving up two earned runs and striking out three. Kenny Ynoa came on for 2 2/3 innings of middle relief, giving up one run. Bigham finished the final 2 1/3 innings allowing a pair of runs.

Senior catcher Peter Kalinski delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel the 22nd ranked Washington & Jefferson President to a 3-2 win over visiting La Roche Friday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park. W&J had to battle out of an early hold, after La Roche picked up an early 2-0 lead after single runs in the top of the first and second innings. La Roche put a pair of runners on base in the top of the seventh but senior pitcher Jameson Campbell punched out Dante DeLillo to escape with the score tied. Senior shortstop Nate Rush drew a walk to lead off the eighth and advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior third baseman Logan Scheider to set up Kalinsk's go-ahead single.

Ferrum College won a non-conference game, 8-4 against Covenant College at Smokies Stadium, in Tennessee this evening. Ferrum got things started in the bottom half of the third inning and added one more in the sixth to lead 6-1. Torres and Jacob Gladstone would score on a wild pitch and a balk, to lead 7-1. The Panthers and Scots would both grab a run in the eighth, giving Ferrum a 8-2 lead going into the ninth. Covenant would score two more in the top of the ninth to close out the scoring for both teams. Starting Pitcher Cameron Mullins (2-0) got the win for the Panthers tonight. Pitching 7.0 innings, he allowed four hits and one run with no walks and seven strikeouts.

SUNY Cobleskill opened the 2022 campaign on Friday by splitting a pair of games with the host Cyclones Centenary taking the first game by a score of 7-2 then dropping the nightcap 7-1 to the host. Cobleskill took control of the contest in the top of the third inning erupting for four runs in the frame highlighted by a two-run homer off the bat of senior shortstop Eddy Garcia from which they never looked back. Offensively Garcia led a quartet of Cobleskill players who posted multiple hit efforts going 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBI, a double and a stolen base. In the nightcap, Centenary pounded out 13 hits including six for extra bases in a 7-1 route of the Orange & Black as Cyclones starter sophomore Nick Guiro, Brick, N.J., Brick Township High School, went the distance to record the win allowing only one earned run on three hits while striking out nine and walking none.

No. 12 Webster University played their home opener this afternoon as they hosted Translyvania University for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Pioneers by a final score of 13-7 to improve to 3-1 on the season. With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 0-3 on the year. It was a full team effort by the pitching staff as six pitchers pitched for the Gorloks. Jordan Smevoll (1-0) picked up the win in this one as he allowed four hits and four earned runs while striking out five in 5.1 innings of work. Joel Arsenault, Deven Shulstad, Ben Kowalski, Bobby Strandt, and J.T. Miller pitched in relief as the five combined to allow five hits and three earned runs while striking out two in the final 3.2 innings of the contest. The Gorloks bats were rolling as they put together 17 hits in the contest with seven players recording a multi-hit game. Ben Swords led the way as he went 2-for-5 with a solo homerun and two RBI.

Sophomore pitcher Terry Murray was near perfect out of the bullpen as Rhode Island College picked up its first win of the season against Crown College, 7-4, at the RussMatt Invitational played on Lake Myrtle Field #6 on Friday afternoon. Cameron Santerre was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, runs and RBI, as well as a stolen base. Freshman pitcher Mike Belcher (Norton, Mass.) started the game for the Anchormen, going four innings. Murray came in and tossed four scoreless innings in relief, striking out four and only allowing one baserunner while picking up the win (1-0). Crown senior outfielder Kyle Schroedle went 2-for-4 with a two-bagger.

PJ Alvanos homered and drove in five runs, Garrett Jackson collected four RBI, and the No. 15-ranked Lynchburg extended its win streak to six games Friday with a series-opening 14-5 win over visiting York. Alvanos put the Hornets ahead in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run single, and his three-run home run in the third lifted Lynchburg ahead for good. Meanwhile, Hornets starter Zack Potts pitched five innings of four-run ball to earn the win. The game was a slugfest early, but Lynchburg's bullpen proved to be the difference; Angel Collazo, Travis Shumate, and Baylor Cumbea finished the game with scoreless outings.

Belhaven took both ends of their Friday doubleheader over the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets with an 8-6 win in Game 1 and a 4-3 walkoff win in Game 2 to secure a third straight ASC series win. In the top of the 7th of game one Howard Payne would threaten though scoring two runs and getting runners on the corners with two outs. Luke Miller entered the game and got the final out for the Blazers though to secure Belhaven's win. Trailing 3-2, it was the Blazers who came from behind in the bottom of the 9th putting together a rally in the final frame to secure the series win. After an error and hit by pitch put two runners aboard with one out, Dawson Albin delivered an RBI base hit to center field that scored Kyle McLaughlin to tie the game and on the same play, Nathan Herron was able to score the winning run on an error by the Yellow Jackets outfield.

Millikin won its ninth straight game defeating Wisconsin-Oshkosh 3-0 at the Workman Family Baseball Field in Decatur, Illinois. The Big Blue got a stellar performance from starting pitcher Caleb Buehrle who pitched nine shutout innings allowing four hits while striking out 12. Millikin got on the board in the second inning on a home run by Garrett Fritz. The Big Blue added two insurance runs in the sixth inning on a two-run double from Tanner Coleman. Jake Surane had two hits for Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Edgewood opened a three-game set at Huntingdon with a 9-3 win on Friday night. The Eagles used a couple big innings at the plate, and got another outstanding game from the pitching staff in the non-conference win. Kyle Jungers picked up the win on the mound, allowing just one run in five innings of work. The Eagles used four pitchers out of the bullpen to close out the win with Nick Holland, Garrett Redner, Matthew Turner, and Conner Dunfee providing scoreless appearances. Together, the Eagles staff allowed just four hits, none going for extra bases. The Eagles scored nine runs after scoring seven during their three-game opening weekend last week.
