Elges perfect as Webster hits 30 win mark

in the 2022 D-III baseball season on Sunday.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The 10th ranked Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for a SLIAC doubleheader. The Gorloks swept the doubleheader as they won the first game by a final score of 5-0 and the second game by a final score of 10-4 to improve to 30-5 on the season and 15-2 in SLIAC play. With the wins today, the Gorloks have hit the 30-win milestone for the 12th time in program history.

The Gorloks put together 10 hits in the first game of the day. They got on the board first in the bottom of the first when Evan Evola hit a sacrifice fly to score to score A.J. Smith and give Webster a 1-0 lead. They added a run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single from Adam Lovell, and three runs in the bottom of the eighth to solidify the win.

Alek Elges (7-2) was dominant in this one as he did not allow a base runner in the Gorloks first perfect game in program history. This marks the teams fifth no-hitter in program history with the last two being in a doubleheader against Eureka (Ill.) College in April of 2021. Elges struck out seven in the game.

Adam Lovell led the way at the plate as he went 2-for-2 with two RBI. In addition, Parker Wielt went 1-for-4 with a two-run homerun and Evan Evola went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Gorloks carried over their momentum into the second game as they rallied for 14 hits in the contest. They got on the board early in this one as they scored seven runs in the bottom of the first to jump out to a 7-0 lead. The Panthers answered with two runs in the top of the second and two runs in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 7-4. Webster extended their lead back out to 10-4 in the bottom of the sixth and then closed out the Panthers in the final innings to solidify their 20th straight win.

Ben Kowalski was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed seven hits and four earned runs while striking out one in 4.0 innings. Deven Shulstad (2-0) got he win as he allowed two hits while striking out one in 3.0 innings. J.T. Miller pitched the final two innings for Webster allowing just one hit while striking out four.

Evan Evola led the way at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Malik Wirges also had a nice game as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI. In addition, Matt Staker went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Ben Swords went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Adam Lovell, Zach Goodman, and Aron Hopp each added an RBI.

The Gorloks will return to the field on Thursday, April 5th when they play host to Millikin (Ill.) University for a nonconference doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 5 p.m. with the second to follow.
