Rhode Island slugs to sweep, F&M unbeaten in conference

 
Lesley Lynx earned their first conference win of the season with a walk-off victory over the Mitchell College Mariners on Saturday morning. The Lynx won the first game 9-8 before the second game was postponed due to rain. The Lynx advance to 12-14 overall and 1-4 in conference play, while the Mariners fall to 18-7 overall and 3-2 in the NECC.

Senior left fielder Joey Coro smacked three home runs as Rhode Island College swept Castleton, 18-1 and 11-1, in Little East action played at Pontarelli Field on Saturday afternoon. After surrendering a run on an error in the top of the first inning, the hosts plated six runs in the home half of the frame. Sophomore right fielder Sean Helfrich dealt the big blow with a grand slam. The Anchormen scored at least one run in each of the ensuing five frames to end the game in seven via the 10-run rule. Senior third baseman Jarrad Grossguth got the Anchormen on the board with an RBI double in the first. Coro followed him with a towering blast into the left field trees, which staked the hosts to a 3-0 advantage. Helfrich would hit his second homer of the day in the second inning and Coro would hit his third in the third frame. RIC led, 7-0, after Coro's homer.

Franklin & Marshall remained undefeated in Centennial Conference (CC) play with 7-2 and 4-1 victories over Muhlenberg at Caplan Field on Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats (14-10, 5-0 CC) used stellar starting pitching from Kyle Roche and Greg Nieskens to stymie the Mules' (11-11, 0-5 CC) bats in the twin bill. Dan Galef notched his sixth consecutive appearance without a run, earning his first career save with two innings out of the pen. Will Samuel finished 4-5 with four RBI, while Spencer Berson and Drew Butera had multi-hit games. Kyle Roche (2-2) evened his record with seven innings of two-run ball, striking out eight and walking none in a superb start. Five different Diplomats combined for the five hits, as Spencer Berson was responsible for a pair of RBI. Greg Nieskens (5-1) earned his fifth victory of the year, allowing just three hits while striking out seven. The junior has allowed just three runs in his last three starts, totalling 18 innings of work. Turzai earned his second save, which now places him in a tie for fifth in F&M history with six in his career.

Brendan O'Neill hit a two-run home run in the top of the eighth as Skidmore College upended Rensselaer, 3-2, on the road on Saturday. Skidmore was held without a run until the seventh, when Jackson Hornung doubled in Jaden Torrado from second with two outs. Christian Giresi picked up a six-out save to preserve the win for Skidmore starter Jack Clark. Clark, now 5-0 on the year, surrendered four hits and four walks over 7.0 innings of two-run ball. He struck out three and hit a pair of batters. Giresi stranded the tying run at third in the eighth and again at second, with the winning run on first, in the ninth to earn his second save of the spring.

Babson (11-8, 2-1) pounded out 10 hits in a 7-3 win over WPI (11-8, 2-1) in NEWMAC action on Saturday at Govoni Field. Originally scheduled as a doubleheader, game two will be played tomorrow due to the weather conditions. Babson's Thomas Lapham drove in a pair of runs and was one of four Beavers to tally two hits in the game. WPI's Jacob Hand led the Engineer offense with a pair of extra-base hits, including his team-leading sixth homerun of the season.

Graduate student Matt Josselyn and senior David Kerns tossed a pair of complete game shutouts to lead Bridgewater State University to a sweep of visiting Framingham State University in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Park. The Bears improve to 13-6 on the season and 5-0 in the MASCAC, while the visiting Rams fall to 5-13 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Bridgewater State holds a 61-18 lead in the all-time series which dates back to 1971. In five MASCAC games this season, the Bears have outscored their opponents, 56-4. Josselyn (3-1) tossed a complete game, three-hit shutout to lead the Bears to a 2-0 victory in game one. The righthander did not issue a walk and struck out a career-high 12 batters including the side in both the second and fifth innings. Kerns (4-0) hurled a complete game, four-hit shutout to lead the Bears to a 12-0 triumph in game two and a sweep of the twinbill. The senior righty walked just one and fanned a season-high nine batters.

Utica University split its Saturday set with St. John Fisher, falling in game one 3-0 before taking game two 11-4. Joe Battista started Utica's rally attempt after leading off the inning by reaching on an error and was followed by a one out single by Jason Story. However, Tesla retired the next two hitters to seal the complete game shutout. Roeschlaub tossed all six innings for Utica in which he allowed three runs on five hits while striking out four, walking three and hitting one batter over 27 batters faced. Utica added three more runs in the 7th as Fasolo drove in another run on a double followed by a two-RBI Muentener double. Brian Dinnen and Brendan May shut the game down out of the bullpen for the Pioneers to secure the split.

Hilbert College earned a big AMCC victory over conference foe La Roche University by way of the long ball, belting a trio of home runs to score a commanding 11-2 win in game two of today's doubleheader. La Roche won game one 5-1. The Hawks were able to strike first in game two, building a 4-1 lead after five. The Hawks turned to the bullpen to start the sixth. William Hudson made his second appearance on the mound. Hudson loaded the bases after hitting a trio of batters before turning it over to Griffin McAndrews. McAndrews would get out of the jam to keep the Hawks ahead 4-2. From there, the Hilbert offense turned it on, scoring seven runs over their final two ups, including back-to-back home runs from Patrick Whelan and Samuel Mullen to earn an impressive 11-2 win.

The pitchers were firing bullets on Saturday at Whiting Field, but Taylor Freeman capped the day with a titanic blast. It was a classic pitchers' duel going into the bottom of the ninth before Freeman belted a three-run homer to give the Lawrence University a 3-0 Midwest Conference victory over Illinois College. The homer made a winner out of Lawrence starter Quinn Berglin, who put together his second consecutive masterful start. Berglin allowed just four hits, all singles, and just one runner to reach as far as third base. He struck out six and walked three to improve to 2-1 on the season. Cullen McBride was almost as good for Illinois College as he allowed four hits over eight innings, struck out eight walked three on his way to a no-decision.

Cornell and Knox traded a pair of dominant outings from its starting pitchers in Saturday's Midwest Conference baseball split at Ash Park Field. Cornell junior right-hander Jake Schope was tough in Game 1, striking out 12 and yielding just three hits in a 7-4 victory. Knox countered with Matthew Shover in Game 2 and claimed a 2-0 shutout win. Schope established a new career strikeout high in his impressive eight-inning effort. He faced only five batters over the minimum.

The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor completed a three-game sweep of Concordia University Texas with a pair of wins over the Tornados Saturday in Belton. The Cru improved to 17-12 on the season and 11-10 in American Southwest Conference action while the Tornados fell to 11-17 overall and 10-11 in league play. Hunter Jones and Staton Dudley led the Cru with two hits each while Holiday had a team-high four RBI. Eight different Crusaders scored runs as UMHB hit .458 in the contest. Big bats continued for the Cru in the second contest. UMHB totaled nine home runs on the day as Malek Bolin set a new program-record for home runs in a career with 27.

The Eastern Mennonite Royals bats stayed hot on Saturday as they combined for 28 runs and 33 hits across their doubleheader. The Royals downed Guilford 22-16 in the opening game before falling 7-6 late in game two. The split puts EMU at 9-18, 5-9 ODAC. EMU came out swinging in the game one. Offensively, EMU was led by Logan Mason who was 4-5 with two runs. The Royals re-took a game two lead in the eighth after Natty Soloman led off the inning with a walk and was replaced at first by Drew Petitt. Gage Riddick walked and Petitt moved to third on a wild pitch. He came in to score on Mason's single and then Jordan Jones doubled, plating a pair and putting EMU ahead 6-5. Unfortunately for EMU, Guilford was able to add two of their own in the bottom of the eighth to pull back ahead 7-6. The Royals got the tying run to second in the ninth but he was stranded there as the final out was recorded.

Fitchburg State University earned a sweep over the Vikings of Salem State University in the 109th and 110th meeting between the two teams, by the scores of 4-3 and 6-0. Fitchburg State opened the scoring in the top half of the third when graduate student Connor Morehouse launched his fourth home run of the season over the center field fence for the 1-0 edge and moved it to 4-2 after six. The Vikings cut into the deficit in the bottom of the seventh as junior Christian Burt reached on a base hit to right, moved to third on a ground out and single by sophomore Samuel Erskine before Boucher notched an RBI fielder's choice to score pinch runner Wilbur Rosario Morel but the Falcons held on for the 4-3, game one victory. The Green and Gold secured the victory in the top half of the sixth frame with freshman Liam Goldstein reaching on a fielding miscue, while junior Jaime Velez (Lowell, Mass.) and Morehouse reached on a base knock and an intentional walk to load the base. Sharp then proceeded to lace a bases clearing triple to right field that scored Goldstein, Velez and Morehouse, resulting in the 6-0, game two triumph.

Saint John's (Minn.) salvaged a split with Carleton thanks to senior catcher Ethan Roe's walk-off, three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning of game two on Saturday, April 9, at Haugen Field at Becker Park. The Knights (4-10, 1-1 MIAC) rode the arm of Kiefer Lord to a 5-1 win in game one, but the Johnnies (11-11, 3-1 MIAC) came back from two, three-run deficits and hit three home runs in game two's 10-9 victory.

Big players come up clutch in big situations, and multiple Wildcats had their moments in a doubleheader sweep of George Fox Saturday afternoon at Roy Helser Field. Linfield tallied 10 runs on 21 hits on the day. Tanner Jacques and Ryan Kamp each racked up four hits in the afternoon while lefty Colton Meyer picked up the save in each end of the twinbill. Jacques drove in four runs and Campos notched his first home run of the season as the 'Cats stormed back for the three-run win over the team from Newberg. It was Campos' second career homer and first since 2019. With the win, the Wildcats jumped into second place in the Northwest Conference standings behind Pacific. They will have a chance to earn a sweep of the Bruins in Sunday's finale. Kamp went 3 for 4 and drove in the go-ahead run to spark a two-run game one victory for the Wildcats over their cross-county foes.

Juniata earned two big conference wins on Saturday afternoon, winning both games of their home doubleheader with Elizabethtown. After winning the first game 6-4, they went on to take a 7-4 victory in game two. Both offenses did much of their scoring early on in game one, with Elizabethtown scoring three of their four total runs in the top of the second while Juniata scored five of their six total in the bottom of that same inning. Starter Chase Alessandroni earned his third win of the season, giving up four runs on nine hits while striking out five batters in his seven innings of work. Relievers Luke Pastor and Dominic Hoyle combined for two shutout innings to finish out the game. Game two would provide another strong all-around performance from the Eagles, with starter Drew Westover getting the win after pitching five innings while allowing only one run on four hits and striking out three batters.

Farmingdale State College picked up a split of its home Skyline Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, defeating visiting St. Joseph's College-Long Island by a 3-2 score in game one, before the Golden Eagles secured a 12-0, seven-inning victory in the nightcap. In the opening contest, Rams senior right-hander Stephen Clancy fired a complete-game five-hitter, striking out a career-high 12 batters in the process. After he pitched a perfect top of the first inning, Farmingdale State took the lead for good in the home half when sophomore first baseman Jordan Lambert launched a two-out, two-run homer to right field, scoring senior Bobby Pollock on the play. In the nightcap, St. Joseph's (11-7, 10-2 Skyline) took the lead for good in the opening inning of play, when left fielder Brian Forbes, who went 4-for-5 in the game with four RBI, plated junior Phil Krpata on a RBI ground out.

Covenant produced a doubleheader sweep over the Lions on Saturday afternoon, marking the first series win at Piedmont in program history. Coupled with Friday's win, the sweep also marks the first series win over the Lions since 2016. Covenant tallied 13 hits in game one and 10 in game two, marking their 15th and 16th contests with double-digit hits this season. The wins improve the Scots to 5-7 in conference play (13-15 overall).

Carthage College (6-16, 1-4 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) snapped a five-game losing streak and picked up its first CCIW win of the year with a 14-0 decision over Carroll University (Wis. 11-13, 4-) in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday, April 9 at Augie Schmidt Field in Kenosha, Wis. Carroll won the opening game, 2-1 in 11 innings. Carthage pitchers had a combined no-hitter and a 1-0 lead after eight innings in the first game. "Other teams have been giving our pitching a hard time," said Carthage coach Augie Schmidt IV, "but we had four guys throw the tar out of the ball today.  We were a caught popup from winning both games, so I'm proud of the team for coming back from that first game.  We had that first game won and wound up losing in extra innings, but we played well in the second game.  It felt good scoring a bunch of runs for a change.  This team has been a little snake-bit, which was certainly the case in the first game, and that game left a mark.  The schedule is going to get harder right away, and for this team especially, nothing is going to come easy."

New England College split their doubleheader against Eastern Nazarene College Saturday afternoon. After winning game one 24-5, the Pilgrims fall 1-0 in the nightcap at Taunton High School. New England College came out swinging in game one, outhitting ENC 26-9. Shaun Cormier picked up his third win after 6.0 innings with five strikeouts. Matt White pitched a perfect bottom of the seventh. Game two was controlled by the pitching staff, as neither team could garner any offensive momentum. New England College was able to get two runners in scoring position in the top of the first inning and just one out but was unable to score. In the top of the fourth inning, NEC threatened, but Tyler Gendron was thrown out trying to score on a base knock to left field by Brady Philibotte. Eastern Nazarene got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, as Shane McNamara led off the inning with a solo home run.

Catholic University opened a three-game series against Landmark Conference opponent Moravian with a 10-6 victory on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals (21-6, 7-0 LC) have now won six games in a row and have triumphed in 19 of their last 21 contests. They also remain undefeated in Landmark Conference play. Junior Tucker Alch started on the mound and pitched into the eighth inning, allowing four runs, three of which were earned, and ten hits, while walking none and striking out five. Alch earned the victory on the mound, elevating him to 6-1 on the season. Greyhound starting pitcher Tyler Valentine caught the loss, moving him to 1-3.

Penn State Abington closed out the season series against Lancaster Bible College by winning the final two games by the scores of 12-2 and 12-6 on Saturday afternoon at Alverthorpe Park to complete the season sweep in United East Conference (UEC) action. The Nittany Lions blew game one wide open in the bottom of the sixth by score seven runs on five hits. Matt Crisci and Swain each had back-to-back two run hits in the inning to make the score 9-2. A three-run home run by Petrucelli later in the inning capped the scoring for Abington. In game two the Nittany Lions set the tone early by scoring five runs on five hits in the opening inning. McCarty drove in the game's first run with a double to right field. After a Petrucelli walk, Morales and Doherty each drove in runs with back-to-back sacrifice flies. Anthony Bencardino followed with a shot down the right field line for a two-run homer to make the score 5-0.

Misericordia University took a doubleheader at FDU-Florham to complete the series sweep of the Devils, Saturday. The Cougars took the opener, 10-4, and the nightcap, 7-3, to improve to 18-10 overall and 8-4 in the MAC Freedom. Tyler Leonard struck out six and scattered seen hits over six innings to earn the game one win. Joe Valenti worked 4.1 innings to earn the win in the nightcap and Connor Maryniak worked 2.2 scoreless innings.

In a game that featured nearly three hours' worth of rain delays, Brandeis University defeated University Athletic Association rivals NYU, 6-5, thanks to a walk-off hit by grad student CF Dan Frey. With the win, the Judges improve to 11-6 overall, 2-4 in UAA play. The Violets fall to 15-5, 5-5 UAA. Brandeis tied things up in the bottom of the eighth when King delivered a towering home run to left field, his third of the season and the fourth of his career, off of NYU closer John Gassler. Petrisko retired the Violets in order in the ninth, setting up Frey's heroics. Nugent led off with a walk, followed by a Khoury single. A wild pitch led to a walk to grad student catcher Luke Hall loaded the bases, and Frey delivered a 2-2 pitch to right field for Brandeis's fourth walk-off victory of the season.

Graduate student Nathaniel Cormier and senior Victor Valentin each drove in three runs as the Nichols College swept a doubleheader, 10-0 and 12-2, from Curry College Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference action. Valentin cleared the bases with a triple in the third while senior DJ Caron ripped a two-run double and Knox drove in two runs. Caron and Knox each tallied three hits in the nightcap in support of graduate student Justin Hurley, who went to the distance to even his record at 3-3 as he scattered four hits and struck out six. Cormier went 4-for-5 with a solo blast and a two-run doubles, and scored three times. Senior Isaac Blanford, along with sophomore Johnny Knox and Andrew Croteau, all collected two hits while Croteau, junior Will Kleinhenz, and freshman William Nath all drove in a pair. Freshman Sean Ryan tossed five innings of shutout ball to pick up his second win of 2022 for the Bison (9-11-1, 2-4-1 CCC). He did not walk a batter and fanned three.

Thomas split their doubleheader with University of Maine at Farmington to open up their North Atlantic Conference season, losing the opener 2-1 and winning in the nightcap 22-5. The first game was a pitching duel between the Terriers' Dylan Copeland and the Beavers' Will Harriman. Thomas got on the board first when Aaron Young singled to center field, scoring Kyle Gleason. UMaine Farmington tied the game in the top of the second and took the lead in the fifth inning. Matt Seymour led the Terriers' offense with two hits while five players each had one hit. Copeland pitched a complete game allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking two. Thomas' bats came alive early in the second game as they cruised to the win. Tony Meza led the Thomas bats with four hits, four RBIs, and four runs scored. Garrison Paillet picked up his third win of the season on the mound, going four and two thirds inning, allowing two runs and striking out an impressive six. James Lappin and Alex Avila came in after Paillet, only giving up one hit in two and thirds innings.

Gettysburg College and Swarthmore College split a Centennial Conference doubleheader this afternoon at Clothier Baseball Field. Gettysburg won the opener 3-2, but Swarthmore won the second, 11-5. In game one, the Bullets broke up a 2-all tie with an unearned run in the seventh inning, which proved to be the game-winning run. Pinch hitter Aaron Kirby led off the inning with a single up the middle and he took second on a sacrifice bunt by David Preziuso. After Mark Seibert drew a walk, Preston Toothman hit a ground ball to set up a tailor-made double play, but the shortstop's throw got away allowing Kirby to score from second base and Toothman took second. That would be all Brett Leighton (2-3) would need as he limited the Garnet to one hit in 3 1/3 scoreless innings. He struck out two batters. In the second game, the Garnet used a three-run fifth inning to take a 7-4 lead in route to an 11-5 victory.

Bethel University saw its 11-game winning streak come to a halt dropping the opener of a twin bill at St. Scholastica Saturday afternoon, 5-2. The Royals denied the Saints of sweep with a big ninth-inning rally in game two taking it 7-6. Nick Kulseth led the Bethel offense going a combined 4-for-7 with three RBIs. BU could never recover fully form the damage in the second only getting one of the runs back. The Royals were plagued by errors leading to a pair of three run innings for the Saints. Bethel's bullpen kept the Saints in check giving the Royals one last chance in the ninth. Comeback efforts began with one out and the bases loaded. Ty Koehn singled to center making it 6-4. A strikeout by Luke Carlson and the Royals were down to their final out. Kulseth came through once again drawing the count full before singling up the middle tying it at 6-6. Two pitches later Marcus Krupke single to center scoring Koehn as the eventual game winner. Blake Williams came in and shut the door in the ninth picking up a strikeout to put the Royals back in the win column. Picking up the win was Michael Meadows throwing 2.2 innings of shutout ball.
