Paul Roche homered and had three RBI, and Jarrett Korson struck out nine with no walks in 5.2 innings as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps opened its 2023 season with a 9-2 win over George Fox on Friday at La Verne's Ben Hines Field. Jack Potter was 2-for-4 with three runs scored for the Stags, who got their season started on a high note. A year ago, CMS lost the opener to George Fox 5-4, but came back to win the next two and take the series.

Korson got the season started off on the right foot, striking out the first two George Fox batters in a 1-2-3 inning. Derek Seneker then had a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the first to key a three-run inning and get the Stags in control early.

Korson threw five shutout innings, leaving a runner stranded on third in the fifth, but came out with two outs in the sixth after a pair of RBI hits with two outs. Bryant Smaaladen came in to get the third out, and worked the seventh and the eighth to keep it a 6-2 game.

Pacific Lutheran showed little signs of rust in the
season opener on Friday night, smashing host Linfield
8-3 to open the three-game non-conference series.
Aaron Barber led the way in his Lute debut, going
three-for-four with two RBIs. Ethan Keintz was
two-for-three with three RBIs while Andy Schmitz
scored two runs and drove in two more. As a team,
the Lutes pounded out 12 hits against the Wildcat
pitching staff that cycling through six on the bump.

The Stags put it out of reach in the eighth with three more runs, as Mitchell Mashiko scored on a wild pitch, Wilson had a sacrifice fly, and Roche had a two-out RBI single. Andrew Blackett worked the ninth and struck out two George Fox hitters to finish it out, as the three Stag pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts and no walks on the day.

The Pomona Pitzer Sagehens start the season 1-0 and open their three-game series against Whitworth with a win.  The Sagehens were led by Isaac Kim who went 2-3 in the win with two walks and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth. David Bedrosian, Nate Jakobs, Jackson Fleming, Donovan Crook, and Caleb Millikan all earned their first hits of the season while Millikan contributed the walk-off at-bat in the bottom of the ninth.

Jake Hilton got the ball for opening day and went five innings giving up two runs and nine strikeouts for a no-decision. Eamon Woods provided the Sagehens with three solid innings of relief work while Eric Prough picked up the win by coming in for a 1, 2, 3 ninth.

Not a ton of action in game one of 2023 on offense but the Sagehens managed three runs on seven hits.  The first run of the game came in the bottom of the second after Crook earned his first collegiate hit and RBI with a double down the line to score Fleming for the 1-0 lead.

Whitworth responded in their next at-bats with an RBI single and went on to take the lead in the top of the fourth after a throwing error by Hilton on a failed pickoff attempt put the Pirates up 2-1.

Millikan played a big role for the Sagehens late in the game after he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the easiest RBI of his career to make it 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh. Millikan then found himself at the plate in the bottom of the ninth with the winning run on third. Millikan came up with a hard-hit groundball to the shortstop that forced a bad throw to the plate as the Sagehens stormed the field for the walk-off celebration on opening day

Redlands got their 2023 schedule underway Friday afternoon at The Yard edging Division II Central Washington University 12-11.

A great start for the Maroon and Grey who bolster a young roster.  They earned 12 runs on 12 hits with four players having multi-hit games led by Esteban Nakashima  finishing 3-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and a walk.  Freshman Sean McCance added a great debut going 2-for-5 scoring twice and driving in another.  Jake Burgess put together a 2-for-3 effort with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk.  Sebastian Mejorado had a breakout start to his sophomore campaign also going 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in three.  Omar Barraza also had three RBI's on the afternoon, with a bases clearing double late in the game.  He was 1-for-5 with a run scored as well.

Lewis & Clark College raced out to an 8-0 lead and junior closer Anthony Clerici closed the door with his program-record 10th save, in a 10-7 season-opening win over Occidental.

Friday's opener was a game of runs with Lewis & Clark scoring eight runs in their first three at-bats, before Occidental tightened the game with six runs between the sixth and seventh innings.

Clerici pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning, including one strikeout, before the game was called due to darkness. Junior ace Brett Pierson pitched the opening five innings and allowed just one run to earn the victory. Pierson struck out five and limited the Tigers to six hits and two walks.

Offensively, the Pioneers racked up 11 hits, 11 walks and five extra-base hits-with the majority of the damage coming early on. Lewis & Clark could have put up even more runs, but the Pioneers left 14 runners on base over their eight at-bats. Sophomore center fielder Brennen Davis opened the year 3-3 and finished the day 3-5 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and a walk.

Dylan Joyce mashed two home runs, and Makana Murashige hit an eighth inning grand slam as Puget Sound won its season-opener, 13-4, at Whittier Friday afternoon.

The Loggers were in a 4-1 hole after five innings, but Joyce hit a solo shot in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit in half. Immediately following Joyce's homer, the next three Logger batters reached base. With the bases loaded, Nicholas Prater put the ball in play and the Whittier first baseman committed an error to allow Makana Murashige to touch home plate. The Loggers tied the game, 4-4, later in the inning when Jack McCullar scored on a passed ball. Kahiau Teruya drew a bases-loaded walk later in the inning, giving Puget Sound its first lead of the game. Cody Hirano then hit a sac fly to cushion the lead to two runs. The sixth-inning rally rolled on, and it culminated as it began – with a Joyce homer. This time three runs crossed the plate to give Puget Sound a 9-4 lead.

Davis Franklin earned the win after working five innings and striking out four. He allowed four earned runs.
