Adrian wins in record fashion

Senior catcher Robert Wirtanen hit a pair of home runs and knocked in a career-high five runs to lead Wheaton (Mass.) to an 11-5 victory over Nichols this afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Mass.

Adrian resumed its trip down south on Friday afternoon against Kean. The Bulldogs unloaded for 28 runs in the win with the help of six home runs. Adrian moved to 2-3 on the season with a 28-6 victory. Kean led 6-2 on the strength of two Phil Marcantonio home runs until Adrian took control and score 26 unanswered runs. The big inning was the fifth inning where the Bulldogs added 10. Adrian scored a pair of runs on wild pitches followed by a RBI single, an error, a hit by pitch with the based loaded, a 2-RBI double, a sacrifice fly, a RBI double, and a RBI single to lead 21-6. Adrian broke the single game team record for most at bats in a game with 51 on Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs also tied the record for most runs in a single game as a team and broke the record for most hits in a single game with 27. Six home runs in a single game also breaks a single game record in program history. The final record broken by the Bulldogs was total bases with 51.

Mary Washington split its Friday doubleheader with Eastern Nazarene in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Eagles dropped the opener, 8-3, before winning the second, 18-5, and move to 7-5 on the season. In the first game, ENU scored seve runs in the first two innings, while the Eagles were limited to three runs on five hits with three errors. UMW scored two in the third, as Luke Guerzon knocked in Ty Lowe with an RBI double, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jacob Christenbury. The Eagles scored one in the sixth as Andrew Gerhardt knocked in Bobby Ayscue with an RBI double. In game two, the Eagle offense came alive, rapping out 12 hits that led to 18 runs. The Eagles broke open a 3-3 game in the third with six runs, and added nine runs the next two innings.

Wilkes opened its Spring Break Trip with an emphatic comeback victory, defeating Houghton 16-10 after trailing 9-1 on Friday afternoon. The Highlanders scored three runs on four hits in the top of the first to gain the lead and added to its lead with two runs in the second and four more in the fourth to go ahead 9-1. Wilkes began its comeback in the bottom of the fourth with seven runs on three hits and three errors. Ryan Sanderson entered in the fifth for the Colonels on the mound and helped shutdown the Highlanders offense the rest of the way. In the bottom of the seventh Wilkes added six runs on three hits to make it 16-9. Houghton scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth on one hit and the error but Sanderson was able to finish off the game with a groundout. Sanderson (1-0) pitched the final five innings allowing just two hits and an unearned run with no walks and two strikeouts. Jason Spezzaferra (3-for-4) and Peyton Schuck (1-for-3) each had three RBI's for the Colonels.

St. Joseph's (L.I.) picked up two non-conference victories on Friday against Neuman. The Golden Eagles scored six runs in the sixth inning to claim game one before the Golden Eagles again scored 10 runs in the third to give SJLI a pair of victories, 4-1 and 15-4. In game one seniors John Lynch went 1-3 at the plate, with a home run and three RBIs, Ryan Decoursey was 1-3, with one RBI off a single to SS and Jake Giannico finished 2-3 with one run scored. In the nightcap, Sophomore James Maggio went 4-5, with one home run and 2RBIs led all players.

Wartburg swept Moravian with scores of 15-3 and 13-2 on Friday at the RussMatt Invitational. The Knights jumped on Moravian early in game one with three runs in the top of the first and built a 8-3 lead heading to the fifth, where the Knights scored four more runs. In the final inning, Zach Wesolowski capped off the game with a two-run shot to make the score 15-3. It was the same story in game two with Wesolowski recorded the two final RBIs from a single in the sixth.

As their final games in Florida appeared, so did the bats. MSOE finished off their time in Florida with two high scoring wins against Calvin (10-2) and Husson (14-5). In their opener, the Raiders completely blew away the Knights in the fifth inning working all the way to bases loaded multiple times throughout the inning. The scoring came quickly in game two for the Raiders as well as they outscored the Eagles by nine runs. Collin Truitt was the top hitter going 3-for-6 with three walks, five runs and seven RBIs.

Anna Maria opened the season with a 10-1 win over Penn St.-Abington. After giving up an early run in the first inning, the AMCATS picked it up and pulled away from Abington dropping ten runs in six innings. James Powers led the charge for the AMCATS going 4 for 4 in the batters box, collecting three runs and four stolen bases. Kosta Drosidis and Christian Villa both collected home runs for the AMCATS. Pingeton collected nine strikeouts in six innings pitch for the AMCATS with Marzec posting five strikeouts in the final three innings to close the game out.

Taking on Averett in a neutral site matchup at Methodist, 18th-ranked Christopher Newport captured a 6-3 win over the Cougars on Friday afternoon. Scott Crosson went 4-for-5 and Brandon Cassedy (2-1) picked up his second career win with a six-inning quality start for the Captains. Averett falls to 3-5-1 with the setback while the Captains improved to 11-2 on the season. Holding onto a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the ninth inning, junior reliever Kyle Lewis earned the first save of his CNU career with a 1-2-3 inning. Lewis opened the inning with a fly ball to center field, promptly struck out the next batter on five pitches, and slammed the door shut with a game-ending groundball to the right side.

Jason Moore and Miles Feaster drove in two runs as Montclair State took down Stevens 5-2 in non-conference play Friday. Patrick Cuccurullo recorded his second victory of the year for Montclair (3-0), tossing six innings while surrendering one run. fell behind 0-1 but broke through with two runs in the top of the fifth and doubled their lead in the sixth, Jack Haveson relieved Cuccurullo in the seventh and escaped a two-on, one-out jam by fanning the next two hitters. Sam Angelo padded the Red Hawks' lead in the top of the ninth, blasting a solo home run to center. The Ducks got a run back in the home half of the stanza as Michael Reyes led off with a homer to center. A walk forced a pitching change, with Matt Pontari coming in. Pontari struck out the first hitter he saw and, after a walk, punched the final two batters to earn his first save of the year.

With the game tied 1-1, Oneonta scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure a 4-1 victory over Cobleskill on Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons now move to 2-2 overall, while the Fighting Tigers fall to 1-2. It became a pitching battle afer the third, with both sides struggling to find any offense. In the top of the eighth, Cobleskill got within striking distance when Zach Ducorsky reached third on a passed ball with only one out. Junior pitcher Kevin Rooney struck out two batters to end the inning and keep the game tied. Oneonta capitalized on some Cobleskill miscues in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead. Sophomore Josh Gilkey scored on a shortstop throwing error, and then a passed ball allowed Gregory Bandura and Foglia to bring runs in. The Fighting Tigers opened the ninth inning with a David Flora triple down the left-field line. Senior pitcher Logan Carriero struck out three straight batters to pick up the save and give Oneonta the win.

FDU-Florham rallied with four runs late in today's game against CCNY and defeated the Beavers by a 6-5 final at Vincent J. and Lenda F. Naimoli Ballpark. FDU-Florham (3-1) was led offensively by Tyrus Chippendale, who went 4-for-5 with a triple, three RBI, a run scored and a pair of stolen bases. Tyler McCulloch went 3-for-4 on the day and Mark Geist went 3-for-3 at the plate as part of FDU-Florham's 14 hit performance in the win. Despite getting the no decision today for the Devils, Jonathan Rodenhaver pitched six innings, scattered three hits, struck out five and allowed one run. Jake Rivera came out of the pen and earned his first collegiate win as he tossed 1.2 scoreless innings and struck out three. Colby Craig earned his first save of the year in the top of the ninth.

Behind 20 hits, Sul Ross State routed LeTourneau University, 13-4, on Friday night at Conrad-Vernon Field. The Lobos got on the board first in the top of the second when Alvaro Hernandez and Tye Lindsey executed the double steal during a first and third situation. The Lobos continued to add unti they put the game away with a four-run rally in the seventh. Chris Ibanez got the start on the mound, throwing 4.1 innings with four strikeouts as he allowed two earned runs. Cade Watson picked up the win after he went 3.2 innings with two strikeouts while he gave up two hits and one earned run. Aidan Becker faced four batters in the ninth as he allowed one hit and did not allow a single run.

Fitchburg State opened the 2023 season with a pair of wins (7-4, 6-2) over the Fighting Scots of Gordon College in first-day action at the Russ Matt Invitational in Davenport, Fla. Trailing 3-1 in the fourth inning, the Green and Gold evened the score with a triple to center field off the bat of Jacob Hurrell. Knotted at 4-4 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Falcons scored three runs to lead 7-4. Liam Goldstein delivered the big hit with a 2-run double down the right field line. In the nighcap, the Falcons plated a run in the opening frame and extended the lead to 3-1 in the second after capitalizing on a passed ball and an errant throw from the Fighting Scots. Gordon's CJ Demers drew a bases-loaded walk for an RBI to cut the deficit to 5-2, however, the Falcons regained the four-run lead when Cole DuHaime scored on an overthrow to third base.

Grove City began its eight-game Spring Break trip in Florida by sweeping a non-conference doubleheader Friday from Saint Mary's (Minn.) at Northeast Regional Park. Grove City (4-3) won the opener, 9-5, then picked up a 2-0 victory in game two. Senior pitcher Tate Ostrowski earned the win after pitching into the seventh inning. He struck out 10 men in six innings, allowing three earned runs and five hits. Sophomore David Leslie faced three men in the seventh and struck out two. Sophomore pitcher Evan Umland fired a five-hit shutout in the nightcap to earn his second win of the season. Umland allowed only five singles in seven innings and struck out five men.

Alma started their second leg of games on their
spring break trip in Louisiana on Friday. The Scots
took on the Gentleman of Centenary College and
came away with a 6-5 win in a hard-fought battle.

Augustana Vikings kicked off a three-day trip to the Sunflower State on Friday, defeating the Cornell Rams by a score of 5-0 at Bettis Sports Complex. The Vikings' offense caught fire earlybuilding a 3-0 lead after one. The two teams traded a scoreless second inning before the Vikings began the bottom of the third where the Vikings grabbed their fifth and final score of the game after Zachary Vrbancic drove in Sosnowski two plays later. The 5-0 lead remained intact the rest of the way as the Vikings kept the Rams off the scoreboard to secure the win. Bryce Luckey threw eight complete innings on the mound, recording six strikeouts and allowing just two hits. Addison Southwick came in for relief in the ninth inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced to close the game. Augustana finished the game with 10 hits and four different players driving in runs.

Cabrini swept Keystone College in a doubleheader Friday afternoon, 5-4 and 6-0, as sophomore Jaden Dickerson walked-off game one with an RBI-double, then junior Andrew Smith threw a seven-inning complete game shutout in game two to complete the sweep. After coming off a heartbreaking loss the night before, the Cavaliers (6-4) came out ready to win Friday afternoon. With the Cavs leading 4-2 in the seventh, the Giants (0-2) knotted the contest at four apiece after two Cabrini miscues led to a two-run single. The game remained tied through the eighth inning and Keystone's half of the ninth. Then in the home half, Zack Brook led off with a single and one batter later, Dickerson roped a double down the line to score Brook all the way from first and send Cabrini into Game 2 looking for the sweep. In Game 2, Smith stole the show as the right-hander was locked in from his first batter of the game as he got Keystone's leadoff hitter to strike out swinging. With a 6-0 lead, Smith continued to dominate as he did not allow a hit from the fourth inning on. Friday's game was the longest outing of Smith's career as he allowed just two hits across his seven innings of work. His nine punchouts set a new career-high and are the most in a start this season for a Cavaliers pitcher.

Methodist took care of business once again on Friday, conquering a persistent Immaculata team in the second game of the Armstrong Invitational. The Monarchs scored a run in each of the first four innings and held the Mighty Macs at bay for a 5-2 victory. Following a scoreless fifth inning and behind 4-1, Immaculata seemed to find life in the top of the sixth, recording three-straight singles to bring home a run. With two runners on and only one out, Stating pitcher Andrew Baur kept his composure, forcing the next two batters to fly out to end the inning. The Monarchs tacked on an insurance run in the eighth, as Caleb Rogers singled down the left field line to score Jordan for the final run of the contest. Baur (now 3-0 with today's win) pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits to go along with four strikeouts.

Behind a seven-inning gem from Rian Schwede, the No. 9 nationally ranked Endicott defeated Salem State, 7-0, on Friday evening at North Field. Schwede was dominant in his first start of the season as the senior righty tossed four 1-2-3 innings and only allowed two runners into scoring position on 78 pitches. The Gulls' offense took care of the rest as Caleb Shpur (East Canaan, Conn.), Jake Nardone, Nicolas Notarangelo, John Mulready, and Joseph Millar all drove in runs. Shpur led the group with the game's first (third inning) and final (eighth inning) RBI of the night. Meanwhile, Chris Jenkins also shined out of the pen by retiring all six batters he faced. His final line was two innings, no walks, and two punchouts.

Mary Hardin-Baylor used an eighth inning rally to earn an 11-5 win over Howard Payne Friday evening in Belton. An early lead for UMHB evaporated in the seventh inning when the Yellow Jackets constructed a pair of single-run frames to go up 4-3. UMHB's offense exploded in the eighth inning, scoring eight runs as they reclaimed the lead. Howard Payne added one more run in the top of the ninth but fell 11-5 to the Cru. Acierni threw seven innings, allowing three runs with seven strikeouts. Nicklas Fenner and Isaac Brann both pitched in relief, throwing one inning each with one run allowed. Five Crusaders recorded multiple hits in the game as UMHB totaled 13 total slams. Grosz, Muniga and Guerin each scored two runs while Herrera and Grosz both drove in multiple runs. UMHB totaled 11 runs on 13 hits with two errors while the Yellow Jackets had five runs on nine hits with four errors.

Concordia Texas freshman designated hitter Mason Vasquez was on fire as blasted two homers in a 10-8 win over East Texas Baptist. Kalen Clark powered a three-run shot in the first inning, and Otto Franz struck out a season-high nine batters to help CTX inside Woods Field on Friday. Clark's home run set the tone in the first inning as he, Chris Morrow and Matthew Armes all scored. The Tigers tied the game up in the bottom of the second as they turned four hits into three runs. Vasquez notched his first home run to left field in fourth inning, but he was matched by ETBU with a home run of their own to tie the game at 4-4. Vasquez responded at his next at-bat with a two-run homer to almost the same spot as his first. Later in the inning, Aaron Gomez would score to make it 7-4. In the ninth inning, Vasquez capped off his impressive night with a sacrifice fly to score Morrow to make it 10-4. ETBU notched four runs in the bottom of the frame, but Concordia posted a 7-6-2 relay throw out at home for the final out as Concordia held on for victory to take the series lead.
